Interview with Bernadette Giacomazzo, THE GATHERING

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series?

The Uprising series is a six-book series that tells the story of three freedom fighters who give it all for the life they once knew and loved. The first book, The Gathering, is out now.

On October 1, 2018, after I finish the promotion for this book that culminates with the Brooklyn Book Festival, I’ll be beginning the process of writing the second book, Kings and Queens, which I already have an outline for. It will be released on March 27, 2019 – exactly one year to the day after The Gathering was released.

Do you have a favorite character?
There are different things I love about each character. Asking me to choose my favorite character is like asking parents to choose their favorite child – they love all their children equally, no matter what.

Have you ever had a minor character evolve into a major one? Did that change the direction of the novel at all?
Absolutely. Tommy Sherman is the most obvious example of a minor character that evolved into a major one – he, actually, didn’t exist when I first drew the outline of the book. But by adding him to the story, Evanora has an equal and a friend – and, as she will soon find out, a purpose.

If you used a graphic designer/publisher’s designer, how involved were you during the creative process for your cover?
Jessica Benoist-Young designed my book cover, and she’ll be designing all six of the book covers. I leave that process in her very capable hands – she does a great job on her own. I’m the type to let artists be artists, and create, without hovering over them.

What is your writing process? Do you listen to music or do you like silence?
I’m not a hobbyist – this is my life. I make my living as a writer/editor, and have for 20 years. So, I treat it as a job, just like every other. Granted, it’s a fun job – a fulfilling job – a job I’m glad I wake up and go to every day, but a job nonetheless.

Do you outline your story or just go where your muse takes you?
When it comes to the actual layout of the story, I absolutely outline it – a beginning, a middle, an end. I outline the plot, too – I map out where I want the characters to go, and what I want them to do. The details of how they get there, of course, is a much more creative process – and one where I allow the Muse to take me where She wants to take me.

Do you find it difficult to juggle your time between marketing your current book and writing your next book?
Not at all. I have a very detailed plan, and I follow it. I do very well with structure and discipline – the only time I like “chaos” is when I’m actually writing, at which point the left brain completely takes over and runs wild. But without a detailed plan – a “right brain” approach to the actual business of writing – you’ll never succeed.

Besides writing, do you have any other passions?
Yes – working out, eating healthy, traveling, the business of music and entertainment, my dog, my nephews and niece, reading, catching live shows, and spending quality time with friends who have become family…and this is in no particular order.

Some fun facts about you, which do you prefer – dogs or cats? Chocolate or vanilla? Coffee or Tea? Talk or Text? Day or Night?
Both
Vanilla
Coffee
Depends who is on the other end of the phone
Night

What’s next for you?
Right now, in addition to working on the next book in the series, I’m in preliminary talks to get the series sold for television adaptation. Nothing too exciting yet, but enough for me to say that the wheels are in motion. In addition, of course, I’m writing for my outlets – currently, I’m writing for HipHopDX, Wrestling Inc., and TV Eskimo, but I’ll have more to add to that list soon.

Plus, I’m working on publicity for a few films that are going to be announced shortly after this interview hits the press, so I invite you all to follow my social media -- @BG_Writes_Stuff on Twitter, @BG_Takes_Pics on Instagram, and @BernadetteRGiacomazzo on Facebook – to keep up with everything I have going on. I’m certainly never bored. 😊

The Uprising Series tells the story of three freedom fighters and their friends in high — and low — places that come together to overthrow a vainglorious Emperor and his militaristic Cabal to restore the city, and the way of life, they once knew and loved.
In The Gathering, Jamie Ryan has defected from the Cabal and has joined his former brothers-in-arms — Basile Perrinault and Kanoa Shinomura — to form a collective known as The Uprising. When an explosion leads to him crossing paths with Evanora Cunningham — a product of Jamie’s past — he discovers that The Uprising is bigger, and more important, than he thought.
