The story is quite creative and believable and the authors unfold it naturally and with good use of the English language.

4.0 out of 5 stars Plausible and creative story of near-future war in the USA,September 14, 2010
By Bruce Fox "Author and Artist" (Naples, Florida)
This is a novella and I hope to see it expanded.........
A well-written, interesting and creative story with a cast of good characters.

THE RIGHT PATH: Abraham "Ham" Jones, a cripple, and Zia Slate, a tomboy with an attitude, find themselves unlikely partners in this post-apocalyptic tale of survival. It is decades later since the world blew itself apart. Life is harsh, gangs rule the streets, the system cops keep the peace anyway they can. Being a kid in this world isn't easy, being a cripple is about the worst sentence handed down. Being a girl with no protection is only slightly better.

Ham and Zia's lives are irrevocably changed when they meet a mysterious old man bearing gifts - a cane for Ham and a knife for Zia. But, nothing is as it seems. Everyone wants something and no good deed goes unpunished. Forced into a desperate encounter, they must fight for their lives when it's discovered they now have possession of two of the legendary memory weapons, the very weapons that ultimately destroyed the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Story, Amazing ImpactAugust 27, 2010
By Ronnell D. Porter (Salt Lake City, UT)
To begin with, I've never liked short stories because I love deep character development. Without being able to learn my characters, I don't care about them. If I don't care about them, I don't care what happens to them. I think you can see where I'm going with this.

It wasn't until I finished reading THE RIGHT PATH that I realized I didn't 'dislike' short stories; I'd just never read a good one. I was fortunate enough to find this gem lurking around in The Burnt Zone (story joke). It's a well-written look into a world where humanity is a myth and ever action taken by one's self is only to achieve two things: personal gain where possible, and survival.

The last time I've seen an extraordinary example of the spectra of the human machine, from the darkest shade of cruelty to the lightest shade of kindness and charity, was when I saw the film 'Blindness' a few years ago. THE RIGHT PATH is a poetic start to an epic journey of reviving humanity. 5 Stars across the board. If novelettes could be nominated for Oscars, this would be in the category.

This one was a little different, but enjoyable, and appears to be setting the stage for a series of stories or a future novel. It will be interesting to see where the author takes it from here.

The author does a great job with character dialogue, setting the stage for the main story, and making you feel like you were one of the characters of the story This was a good short story - if you are looking for something quick to read during your lunch break I would recommend grabbing it.

I need two things to love a story. I need exciting, imaginative ideas... AND I need the substance of real characters with depth. I honestly don't like most fantasy or scifi stories that I read. They tend to give me just the imaginative part and leave out the substance.

The Right Path manages to give us both! We can spend some time in a post-apocalyptic world, and we also deal with real issues and real characters.

We need more stories that remember they have to do BOTH of these things!

The Good News...

The good news about Martin and Small's Right Path: Dark Future series is that it is so well written. My first and foremost criteria for an enjoyable read is that the characters have a voice. In this work, both "Ham" a young cripple and Zia, a scrappy girl who has suffered abuse, are on their own in a terrifying new dystopic world where food is scarce and civility non-existent. Then they meet up with an old man who changes everything for them - and maybe the world as they know it. These authors are obviously talented. Giving believable voice to teenagers is no small feat. The `bad' news is that this is a short-story and ends all too soon.

3.0 out of 5 stars Post apocalyptic fable shows promise, but is bogged down by wish-fulfilment.October 18, 2010

What I like the most about this story is the ambition of its authors. In the space of this short story, they have attempted a number of technically challenging narrative devices, and if their success is only patchy, it is nonetheless to be applauded.

They have sought to create a post apocalyptic vision, and if original visions are hard to come by, theirs is at least well visualized, developed, and thorough. ...The authors show that they have a knack for quick painting of secondary characters - exploiting cliché skilfully at times (proving that a well chosen cliché can be no bad thing). ...They have a knack for quick establishment of location, and they attempt to quickly establish the setting, though there is a little too much exposition for my tastes.

...the language of the novelette is accessible without being overly simplified...To this end, the authors succeeded in bringing the story to life and keeping it that way.

In some ways, The Right Path feels more like a teaser than a book, which may have been the point. It serves as a good lead-in...  The fact that my interest was piqued indicates the book's potential to draw a person into this make-believe world. A great deal of possibility lies ahead for this series if The Right Path is any indication of future success.

In this novelette featuring crippled teenager, Abraham "Ham" Jones, and his tomboy partner, Zia Slate, the stakes are even higher. They have agreed to accept the memory weapons from their new guardian, Henry Lloyd, but with the power of the weapons comes the responsibility to follow "the right path." It's suppose to be simple: help one person at a time, but nothing in this harsh world is ever simple. It's a dog-eat-dog world where food is scarce and gangs rule the street.

When Ham decides to go into the worst gang-ridden area of the city to save a little girl, Zia doesn't think it's a good idea. It's too dangerous, but eventually she agrees and the two set off in search of the girl. When Zia goes off to scout ahead, Ham's worst nightmare comes true. Zia is snatched by slavers. Can Ham find out where she has been taken and mount a defense to save her in two days before she is sold as a sex slave?

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast-paced story in the Dark Future seriesJuly 29, 2011
This review is from: Zia's Path (Apocalyptic Novelette) (The Dark Future Series) (Kindle Edition)
In this new novella of the Dark Future series, we spend more time with Abraham "Ham" and Zia, along with their guardian Henry Lloyd, who is the man who provided them with their memory weapons in the earlier novella "The Right Path."  Like "The Right Path, the action in this novella is non-stop - this is necessary in order to pack the plot into such a compact area. Fans of the Dark Future series, or dark fantasy/fantasy-adventure in general will enjoy this quick read. Definitely pick it up!
