Interview with Jennifer-Crystal Johnson, FIBERS

First, I’d like to say thank you to Two Ends of the Pen for taking the time to interview me and allowing me to share some of my thoughts with you and your readers today. I know there’s a lot of work that goes into some of these posts, so I just want to let you know that I appreciate your time and effort as well as the excellent questions you’ve asked!

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series?
Yes, Fibers is part of a series called The Infiltration Trilogy. This series is about a woman named Anna Reynolds who develops a disease commonly known as Morgellons disease. This is a real illness without a cure, which was what fascinated me and got my mind going with ideas. I thought that maybe, even if I used it in a fictitious setting, my books could potentially help raise awareness about the condition.

As Anna’s disease progresses, other strange things begin happening to her as well. She has dreams and waking hallucinations of shadow people, one of whom has glowing red eyes. This makes her a bit paranoid, especially as she learns more about some strange things going on with her doctor. She feels like she’s being watched and this further feeds her fear and paranoia about her condition.

Eventually she learns about a secret organization that works with the government called the BQS (Bureau of Quantum Sciences), and things get stranger from there =).

Fibers introduces the concepts and ideas behind the series, and the second book, Numbers, will delve deeper into what’s happening between our dimension and a parallel dimension as well as more about how the technology used actually works. I won’t lie – I’m excited to get to work on this second book in-depth!

What factors influenced your decision to self-publish your book(s)?
I’ve been self-publishing since 2010, but in 2005 I had my first book published, a novella called The Outside Girl: Perception is Reality. Unfortunately, in my search for an agent and publisher back then, the only organizations I found who actually got back to me ended up being on the Writer Beware list... I didn’t know about that list at the time, though.

Once I learned that and after realizing I was only getting $0.95 a copy on a short book they priced at $16.95, I figured I could learn how to publish myself and make the whole thing more profitable in the long run as well as not having to be under contract and dependent on someone else.

That’s not to say I wouldn’t be open to working with a traditional publisher eventually; however, if I’m going to have to do all the marketing work myself anyway, then why bother? I like to be able to observe how book sales are doing and what marketing tactics work when, and you usually can’t keep such a close eye on sales when you’re with a traditional publisher. Maybe I’m just a control freak about it, lol.

If you used a graphic designer/publisher’s designer, how involved were you during the creative process for your cover?
I actually did the cover myself, and it was an awesome process! I do have some design training from college as well as knowing how to work with Photoshop, so I do book cover designs for clients, too.

The cool thing about this book cover is that I was telling a couple of my friends about the idea for the book and one scene in particular, which everyone got all excited about. I’ve known Dan since we worked together as pizza delivery drivers when I was 19, and I’ve known Malinda for just about as long because we used to hang out at Denny’s at night and go driving around randomly because it was fun. Nothing like a drive to nowhere at 3:00 AM, right? I used to get very restless; still do sometimes =). But I think that’s from being an Army brat, lol.

So Dan, Malinda, and I all brainstormed about how we could get this cover art done and make it seem real. Malinda is a very talented artist, and she has training in doing special effects makeup. Dan is a photographer, so he brought his equipment and lights to my house and set up a backdrop right in my living room =).

And who was the model for the cover? My oldest daughter, Guenevere, who has the most beautiful, big eyes. She’s always looked older, and believe it or not, she’s only about 11 in the picture on the cover, but it totally works and I love it.

I also ended up putting a great deal of thought into the font, which I found on dafont.com. It’s unique and sci-fi-looking enough without being illegible, so it was perfect.

Do you belong to a critique group? Have they helped improve your writing?
It’s not a critique group, per se, but I do have two friends whom I talk to when I need to brainstorm or get the creative juices flowing. These same friends usually volunteer to be my beta readers, too, and go through the book thoroughly while leaving comments with their thoughts in the margins. This generally happens after I’ve revised a number of times already, but before I do my final 2-3 revisions and then my final edit.

I think that they have definitely helped me improve my writing. In fact, without one specific person, I may never have even finished the book. Writing is a lonely profession, and sometimes we forget that we need encouragement and critiques that are actually constructive to be at our absolute best.

What is your writing process? Do you listen to music or do you like silence?
My writing process is still in development, lol. I will say that I learned that I need to create at least a basic outline to know where the story is going so that I can make sure everything makes sense and streamline the process. Though writing with the idea just in my head turned out okay by the end of Fibers, it would have been much faster if I’d created an outline, so I plan to do that for this next book, which is why I’ve only jotted down a few notes and one short scene. I’d like to continue focusing on marketing for now and I’ll probably get back to writing this summer.

Music is a must! Not only does it help me focus, but it also keeps me in a happy mood, so I listen to music all the time no matter what I’m working on. Without music – like if I forget for a few days or something – my mood tends to crash and I lose motivation. Music is ear food... I absolutely need it =).

What have you’ve learned during your self-publishing journey?
As I mentioned earlier, I’ve been self-publishing since 2010. Because I had a knack for it and love learning new things, I began helping other people publish within a very short amount of time. Although I can go back now and see flaws and errors in my first few books, I feel like I’ve streamlined the process and can now effectively show other people how to self-publish. Or, if learning isn’t a desired option, people can hire me for services =).

I have some publishing packages as well as a portfolio on my author site, but I’m working on transitioning that information to www.NoBullSelfPublishing.com, where you can already find free video tutorials for some of the basic tasks involved in self-publishing. This project is also a work in progress, but I’m hoping to be able to help self-publishing authors bring quality work into the world.

What kinds of marketing [twitter, facebook, blog, forums] are you involved with for promoting your book(s)?
Fibers is the first book that I’ve actually created a marketing plan for, and I’m in the middle of it right now. In fact, your blog is a part of it =). My blog tours are the cornerstone of my marketing plan, so I scheduled three: a one-day book blast, a two-week standard tour with posts every weekday, and a 16-week extended tour with posts once a week. During the second week of the standard tour, I scheduled two Twitter promotions, a Countdown Deal for the Kindle edition, a Facebook boosted post, a Facebook marketer, and a Twitter ad for the second half of the week.

There are also Facebook events for multiple authors that I like to participate in, and I plan to do that once a month until August when the extended tour ends. I also want to supplement that with monthly Twitter and Facebook sponsored posts so that my novel gets as much exposure as possible. I also submitted my novel to the ReadingDeals book reviewer tool, which guarantees 10-15 unbiased reviews.

It’s stressful and kind of chaotic and not guaranteed to work, but at least I’ll be able to say I did everything I could to promote my novel. I’m also planning to pitch the trilogy to movie and TV producers sometime this summer so that I can hopefully get movie rights optioned.

I’m gathering all of this information and my resources together into a short eBook that I’m working on and hope to publish later this year. It’s called The No Bull Guide to Self-Promotion for Independent Authors and will be available on the Kindle and through the No Bull Self-Publishing website.

Oh! And as an aside, I entered the book into a contest. At this point I couldn’t afford to invest a whole lot more money, but I figured it would be important to try because even if I’m only a finalist, it will boost my credibility as an author.

What advice would you give a new author just entering into the self-publishing arena?
For self-publishing, it’s important to make sure your book is edited and formatted well. They always say that authors shouldn’t edit themselves, which is a rule I broke, but I make a living editing other people’s work, so I made the decision to just go with feedback from beta readers and trust my spelling and grammar skills. My major concern wasn’t about spelling and grammar, but rather about plot holes and character development, which is why I asked people for feedback to make sure.

If you can edit yourself, then I definitely recommend handing the manuscript to at least 2-5 people for critique... and don’t expect everyone to give you feedback. Sometimes people agree to something like that but then they don’t get around to it, so you have to be prepared for that. These people should also be highly creative and involved in the literary world somehow, that way they know at least the basics of writing a good story.

The presentation of the book is extremely important, though. Little to no spelling and grammar mistakes, pretty formatting for print and eBook, a cover that looks high quality and stands out, and if it’s a series, all of the covers should have a similar style and the same font for brand recognition. It also helps in a series to have titles that sound similar (think Divergent, Insurgent, Allegiant), which is why the titles of my books in this series are Fibers, Numbers, and Embers. I also have an idea for a prequel, which will be called Ashes but will come out after the trilogy is finished.

Last but not least, don’t expect your book to sell itself. That doesn’t happen anymore unless you’re already famous, so be prepared to do a lot of marketing and advertising long-term. The more people see your book, the more people are likely to buy it... people generally have to see something 7-10 times before they buy, and even then only about 10% of people will buy. I know, those numbers don’t sound too great, but that’s just the way it is when everyone is bombarded with ads and promotions and products on a constant basis.

Those are some of the basics... hopefully this info helps someone =).

Besides writing, do you have any other passions?
Music =). I learned to play the keyboard/piano when I was eight years old and spent a number of years composing music and thinking I would be a rock star, lol. I do plan to get back into music more regularly, but for now I’m focusing on my writing career and various other projects. Recording equipment tends to be pricey, so I need to make good money with something before I can comfortably set up a home studio and learn how to produce, mix, and master the music. In the meantime, I do karaoke and play the piano sporadically, but something I spent that much time doing as a child and teen is not easily forgotten. Who knows, maybe I’ll release a CD in the next few years ;).

What’s next for you?
Well, obviously finishing the trilogy is a top priority. However, there’s another series I have an idea for that will be geared more toward a YA audience. Still sci-fi, but the characters will be in their mid to late teens. I’m not going to go into it too much because it’s not even close to being worked on, but I’m super excited about bringing this idea to life because it’s a very interesting concept and the idea came to me in a dream, which is where I get a number of my ideas. Aside from that, I’m also going to continue to make tutorials and help other authors self-publish, work with certain clients on their books, and continue with my other projects such as the Soul Vomit anthology (www.SoulVomit.com) to help raise awareness about domestic violence (and, shameless plug... submissions are open if you have a DV story to share!).

Thank you so much for having me! I hope that you go and grab a copy of Fibers, but if you’re not sure and would like to read some excerpts first, please head over to www.JenniferCrystalJohnson.com and sign up for my author newsletter. You’ll receive 12 excerpts from my book to either read or watch me read to you, depending on what you prefer =).

I hope you have a wonderful week!

#Excerpt: THE MIDNIGHT SEA by Kat Ross

The Midnight Sea
Kat Ross
(Fourth Element #1)
Publication date: May 10th 2016
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult

They are the light against the darkness.
The steel against the necromancy of the Druj.
And they use demons to hunt demons….

Nazafareen lives for revenge. A girl of the isolated Four-Legs Clan, all she knows about the King’s elite Water Dogs is that they bind wicked creatures called daevas to protect the empire from the Undead. But when scouts arrive to recruit young people with the gift, she leaps at the chance to join their ranks. To hunt the monsters that killed her sister.

Scarred by grief, she’s willing to pay any price, even if it requires linking with a daeva named Darius. Human in body, he’s possessed of a terrifying power, one that Nazafareen controls. But the golden cuffs that join them have an unwanted side effect. Each experiences the other’s emotions, and human and daeva start to grow dangerously close.
As they pursue a deadly foe across the arid waste of the Great Salt Plain to the glittering capital of Persepolae, unearthing the secrets of Darius’s past along the way, Nazafareen is forced to question his slavery—and her own loyalty to the empire. But with an ancient evil stirring in the north, and a young conqueror sweeping in from the west, the fate of an entire civilization may be at stake…

EXCERPT:
My eyes flew open at the crack of dawn. I groaned and rubbed my forehead. My scalp tingled, an icy, unpleasant sensation. I knew right away where Darius was and what he was doing. It was another side effect of the bond, I’d discovered. I could feel his heart beating. I knew that one of his boots was too tight. I could shut my eyes and tell you exactly where he was, even if he was hundreds of leagues away.
Why had no one told me what it would be like? I supposed Tijah did, but this was much worse than I’d expected. Much, much worse.
I threw on my new scarlet tunic and marched down to the river. Tendrils of mist swirled through the dead reeds at the edge. It was late autumn and the air had a dank chill that promised snow.
My daēva stood there, stripped to the waist, pouring water over his head with his right hand. He wore a gold faravahar on a chain around his neck, its eagle wings spread wide. His left arm lay at his side, grey and dead. I stared at his shoulder, at the juncture where smooth skin met rough. His Druj curse.
It slowed me for a moment, seeing that pathetic arm, but I wasn’t yet ready to forgive him for waking me. That was my excuse, anyway. Of course, what really angered me was the terrible realization that I was burdened with a sorrow not my own, but that bled me nonetheless. What really angered me was him—everything about him.
He was calmer this morning, but I wasn’t. I stopped about twenty feet away. He didn’t turn around although he knew I was there.
“It’s nice that you’re so pious,” I said. “But don’t you think it’s a little early to be down here performing the morning rites?”
He paused, then dumped the last of the water from the bowl. I felt the cold trickle down my spine and my lips tightened.
“I was taught by the magi to come at first light,” Darius said. “Did you expect to sleep in? I’m afraid that’s not the way it works for Water Dogs.” He smiled, and we both knew it was fake. “I’m sorry if I’ve offended you in some way.”
I stared at him, at the dark hair plastered across his forehead, his stubborn mouth. He looked so human. And yet there was something in the way Darius held himself, perfectly at ease in his own skin. Still but coiled, like the wolves I’d seen in the mountains.
“You haven’t offended me in the least,” I said. “I suppose you need the blessing more than I do.”
I spun on my heel and walked away, knowing I had wounded him. A small stab to my own heart. And I felt slightly ashamed. But that wasn’t the end of it. Then I felt his satisfaction at my shame. And my own anger that he knew and was glad.
And then his amusement at my anger!
I stalked off, determined to think nothing, to feel nothing, ever again.
If only it were that easy.

#Excerpt: NEVERLAND WARS by Audrey Greathouse

The Neverland Wars
Audrey Greathouse
Published by: Clean Teen Publishing
Publication date: May 9th 2016
Genres: Fairy Tales, Retelling, Young Adult

Magic can do a lot—give you flight, show you mermaids, help you taste the stars, and… solve the budget crisis? That’s what the grown-ups will do with it if they ever make it to Neverland to steal its magic and bring their children home.
However, Gwen doesn’t know this. She’s just a sixteen-year-old girl with a place on the debate team and a powerful crush on Jay, the soon-to-be homecoming king. She doesn’t know her little sister could actually run away with Peter Pan, or that she might have to chase after her to bring her home safe. Gwen will find out though—and when she does, she’ll discover she’s in the middle of a looming war between Neverland and reality.
She’ll be out of place as a teenager in Neverland, but she won’t be the only one. Peter Pan’s constant treks back to the mainland have slowly aged him into adolescence as well. Soon, Gwen will have to decide whether she’s going to join impish, playful Peter in his fight for eternal youth… or if she’s going to scramble back to reality in time for the homecoming dance.

EXCERPT:
A flash of lightning electrified the sky, shooting light through the forest with a jarring pang. The boom of thunder followed immediately after. The sky was grey and the clouds shifted like a swarm of dark fish in a pond. Gwen feared she would be caught in a storm, but not a drop of rain had fallen yet.
All at once, Gwen found herself in a meadow. She had never been here before; she knew that. Wildflowers cropped up in sporadic clumps, and the long, green grasses were uncut at her calves. The tree line had suddenly broken. One minute, she was racing through the forest, the next, she was floating here. Pausing to catch her breath, she ironically felt safer in this open area than in the claustrophobic security of the forest. She landed gently, unthinkingly. Turning her head to the sky, she saw the faint grey clouds blowing and rolling away. Darker clouds seemed to be coming to take their place.
On the other side of the meadow, Peter burst into the clearing. Bramble was leading him, guiding the boy to poor, lost Gwen. If Gwen had understood the fairy language, she would have already known that.
“Gwenny!”
“Peter?” Gwen shouted. She ran to him, and between her bounding strides and his quick flight, they met in the middle of the meadow, cornflowers and lilacs growing up around them. Perhaps if he had been on the ground initially, she would have hugged him. Peter lingered in the air for just a moment though, and by the time he landed, the impulse to hug each other had melted away into urgent discussion. “What are you doing out here?” His voice carried the sort of anger that only accompanied concern.
“I got lost in the woods; I was trying to come back. Is something wrong, Peter?”
Bramble flitted back and forth, pacing in the air, objecting to Peter and Gwen having this conversation now, rather than when they were safely underground.
“The opposition, they’ve launched an attack. We’ve got to get to cover.”
“What? No, it’s just a storm.” Gwen didn’t understand what Peter was telling her, but she had already made up her mind that she didn’t believe it.
“Gwen-dollie, we’ve got to go. There’s—”
The sky was suddenly drained of light. The thin, grey clouds that had blocked the sun were eclipsed by darker, brooding storm clouds, and as the daylight faded, small, grey flecks began to rain down. As they drifted softly, Gwen knew it wasn’t rain. Her attention was as captivated as Peter’s was, but she did not understand what it was the way he did. “Snow?” she asked quizzically, looking at the grey and dirty powder as it started to fall around her.
Peter held out his hand and caught a flake of it, crushing it in his hand. It left a smoky residue on his palm. “Ash.”
The winds picked up, and more of the ash furiously fluttered down. It became larger, and Gwen could hardly comprehend the charred flecks of paper that were plummeting down. Peter zipped up into the air, jumping more than flying, to grab a large square of it. He came back down immediately, a look of horror on his face.
“Peter, what is it?” Gwen pled, hoping that her fear was born of her unknowing, that if she only had answers she wouldn’t be afraid, but from the look on his face, she knew that answers would only bring more fear.
The invisible hand of the wind grabbed the paper from out of Peter’s hold. It blew straight to Gwen. Catching it, she realized it was a page from out of a newspaper; the title read—ISIS ATTACK ON ERBIL; HUNDREDS DEAD.
She had seen newspaper headlines before, but this news did not belong here. Not in Neverland. It was too dark, too terrifying of a thing to read amid the lilacs and cornflowers. Again, she begged, “What is this, Peter?”
The page was torn out of her hand by the vindictive wind. Peter answered her, with a word she had never feared so greatly. “Reality.”

#Excerpt: A WEDDING AT MEADOWS SHORE by Eva Charles

Excerpt:

Suddenly she realized what was happening—the moans were coming from her. She needed to stop. This was a bad idea. She knew he was an expert at making women melt. She forced her brain to wrest control from her body, and pulled away.

“Sophie, don’t,” he pleaded.

“I can’t do this.”

He cradled her face in his hands. “Sophie, we’re both adults. This is something we both want. I know you want this—maybe not as bad as I do, but you want it.” He kissed her neck and whispered, “Say it, say it…please say it.”

She looked tortured. If he persisted, he could wear her down. But he didn’t want that. What he wanted was to take her to bed, take her body to new heights, visit places she’d never been before. He wanted to exorcise the painful memory of her ex-husband, snuff out the memory of every man she’d ever been with.

He wanted to enjoy her pleasure, wanted her to enjoy him, with no regrets. If he pressed her now, there’d be regrets in the morning, lots of regrets. Regrets he couldn’t afford, because he meant to have her again. One night with her would never be enough to satisfy him. He didn’t want her forever, didn’t want anyone forever, but he wanted her for a little while. Just a little while.

BLURB:

Interview with Suzanne Adams, MUSING OF AN EARTH ANGEL

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series?
My book, Musings of an Earth Angel is a story about a girl who has what she thinks is the perfect life, until it all comes crashing down.  She has a cracking open of sorts and starts to search for her life purpose and the true meaning of life.

Samantha Kingston had the perfect job, perfect boyfriend, and perfect Friday nights. When disaster strikes she loses everything and is propelled into a journey where evil and good, dark and light are battling for her destiny. Will the Demon Brigade viciously destroy her? Or will her Angel team and the Divine help her to elevate and see her real truth as an Earth Angel?

Yes, it is the first book of a trilogy!

If you used a graphic designer/publisher’s designer, how involved were you during the creative process for your cover?
I was pretty involved because I had a certain feel and vibe I was wanted to capture.  My designer did an amazing job and I am very pleased with my cover!

Do you belong to a critique group? Have they helped improve your writing?
I do not, but I definitely use editors when writing.  I am not sure how I would be able to do it other wise.

What is your writing process? Do you listen to music or do you like silence?
I love to be in a relaxing place, if possible and listen to classical music.  I have don’t that form the beginning so it helps sort of get me right into writing mode.

Do you outline your story or just go where your muse takes you?
I sort of have an idea of where things are going to go, but then I just sort of get out of the way and allow the story to take flight.

Did you hire an editor to review your manuscript before publishing?
Yes!  I am super grateful for editors.  I honestly couldn’t not have published my novel without a great editor.

Besides Amazon, are there any other sites where your books are for sale?
Yes, you can get Musings of an Earth Angel anywhere books are for sale!

What kinds of marketing [twitter, facebook, blog, forums] are you involved with for promoting your book(s)?
Mainly Facebook and Instagram

Do you find it difficult to juggle your time between marketing your current book and writing your next book?
Sometimes, it it definitely more challenging to carve out as much time to write this go around.  But I am so excited to be sharing this story with the world so it is all really worth it!!

Besides writing, do you have any other passions?
I love to teach about happiness and encourage people to follow their dreams.  I also love, love, love to travel!

The truth, Starks realized back in his cell, was that he’d given little thought to Bo during his time in isolation, a true case of “out of sight, out of mind.” Seeing Bo brought something home to him: if the gang leader didn’t get him, one of his gang members would.

He’d caught Bo by surprise in that attack, and he knew that wouldn’t be allowed to happen again. The inmate and his followers would be on alert from now on.

He could feel retaliation following him, waiting for him like something in the shadows. He was in prison for a long time. They all were. All Bo or anyone needed was an opportunity—or an arrangement with the right guards.

Sure, he’d demonstrated that he, too, was capable of violence but he’d never initiated it. He’d always been provoked.

Maybe he needed to make a concession in this case: Kill Bo before the man killed him. But that solution was fraught with dead-ends. Literally. One or more gang members would surely go after him, if he succeeded. The idea of taking Bo out was nothing but wishful thinking, with no basis in reality.

Maybe there were other gangs at Sands that would include him as a member, protect him? Of course not, he chided himself. No one opposed Bo. Not if they wanted to live. And especially not if they wanted the contraband he could provide that no one else could.

Maybe if he attacked a guard, they might extend his time in solitary. But that didn’t guarantee safety either, including or especially with the guards who’d probably avenge their own, one way or another.

And he was fairly certain the chance that another inmate would kill Bo, for whatever reason, was zero. Even if someone else did the job, that wouldn’t mean Bo’s gang would let him get away with what he’d done to their leader. Eventually, he’d have to be made an example of.

Every idea that came to Starks’s mind was followed by a reason it wouldn’t work. The only idea he couldn’t argue with was that he should use some of his isolation time to build his strength. Letting himself get weak in any capacity wasn’t a wise way to go. They couldn’t keep him in isolation forever.

And, he decided, he should do something to strengthen his faltering nerve, as well. But that seemed harder to wrap his thoughts around.

He almost felt foolish for being so edgy. The rest of the week, after all, had been routine: Meal trays of crappy food were slid into and retrieved through the slot; all the guards but Ted Landers insulted him; lights dimmed at night and brightened in the morning; one hour a day to exercise and shower.

It was during that one hour that he went on full alert. He felt somewhat safer when Ted was on duty, but knew not to trust that completely. Not that he believed Ted would betray him but that the out of shape CO could be overpowered, injured, or killed by another inmate.

That thought not only made fear return but intensified it.

He needed more people on his side.

BLURB:

Frederick Starks has it all—a gorgeous wife who was his high school sweetheart, three beautiful children, a mansion and cars others envy, millions in the bank, respected in his community, admired by his employees, loved and respected by loyal friends. He revels in the hard-earned power and control he’s acquired. As the saying goes, “All that glitters is not gold,” which Starks discovers when gut-wrenching betrayal by his wife sends him over the edge and into a maximum security prison. There, Starks is a new “fish,” stripped of nearly everything he’s always relied on. In that place, where inmates and guards have their own rules and codes of conduct, Starks is forced to face the darker side of life, and his own darker side, especially when the betrayals, both inside and outside the prison, don’t stop. He must choose which path to follow when the line between right and wrong becomes blurred: one that leads to getting out of the physical and emotional hellhole he finds himself in or one that keeps him alive.

EXCERPT:
My fingers ached with the need to touch him. “Thank you. It’s beautiful.” I glanced away and then back. “You didn’t have to get me anything for my birthday. Besides, my birthday isn’t for another couple days.”
“I wanted to get you something that would remind you of me.” His lips curled up into a small smile.
My body craved to be touched by him, and as if he sensed my need, he suddenly leaned in, putting his nose against my neck. My lips parted as his alluring aromatic scent of expensive cigars, sandalwood, and rich earth wafted around me. I almost dropped my glass before carefully placing it on the table with trembling fingers.
He leaned away, and when he pulled a small plate over in front of me, his arm brushed the side of my breast.
Scooping a teeny portion of truffle mac and cheese onto a plate, he dug into it and held out a forkful. “Here, open up for me, darling.”
Butterflies fluttered in my stomach. “You do know I’m not a two-year-old?” I countered.
But there was something sexy about him feeding me, and it aroused my senses and body.
“Open your mouth, Hope,” he demanded in a voice that was low, seductive.
My breath quickened. Well… if you insist.
My lips parted, allowing him to slide the fork inside. Damn, it is good—in every fucking way possible.

#Excerpt: IT'S ALWAYS COMPLICATED by Julia Kent

It’s Always Complicated
Julia Kent
Publication date: April 27th 2016
Genres: Adult, Contemporary

Take two men, one woman, three children. Stir in one best friend and her fiancĂ© doctor. Whisk one best friend’s niece, her two rock star boyfriends, and add a grizzled old octogenarian diner owner with a naughty mouth and her eighty-something boyfriend who loves every minute of her.

Put them all in a campground in northern Maine where the owners’ daughter has two special men of her own. Bake for 400 pages.
It’s Always Complicated is the sprawling saga of how Laura, Mike and Dylan (Her Billionaires) and Josie and Alex (It’s Complicated) have the wedding of a lifetime at Escape Shores Campground (the Obedient series) while Darla, Trevor and Joe (the Random series) make an appearance with a cast of characters that includes cameos from the Warlock Waitress and maybe…just maybe…Mavis the Chicken.

This book combines three of Julia Kent’s series in a madcap spectacle that yields one universal truth: love is a journey and not a destination, but people will drive you crazy along the way.
Enjoy the ride.

EXCERPT:
A small crowd of men wearing gun holsters ran past Josie and Alex, followed by three uniformed TSA agents.
“I wonder what that’s about?” Alex marveled, his eyes tracking the fracas. He and Josie had come to the Portland, Maine airport to pick up her mother, Marlene, and Aunt Cathy, Uncle Mike and her new Uncle Calvin. All the Ohio relatives were here for her and Alex’s wedding.
A cold wave of dread washed over her. They were running toward the baggage claim for the airline her entire family was on.
“I’ll bet it’s my mother,” she groaned, leaning against him for support. His strong arm wrapped around her shoulders and gave her the comfort she needed. Too bad he couldn’t give her a second backbone made of steel.
If he could, she knew, he would. The thought made her smile.
“I’m sure it’s nothing,” he said, giving her a squeeze. She looked up at him. Way up, given the enormous height difference between the two of them. His warm, brown eyes met hers and for an instant, she wondered if he might be right. That eternally positive outlook he had was a bit infectious.
Maybe she needed to stop assuming the worst of every situation.
A rotund security guard huffed and puffed, running past them, holding what looked like a spare uniform. He was talking into a walkie-talkie.
“Naked?” Huff huff. “She’s naked? What size?” Huff huff.
Alex’s kind eyes filled with alarm. It was both charming and horrifying. Josie couldn’t quite decide which impression she enjoyed more. There was a kind of schadenfreude in realizing she was right. His idealism was sweet, but sometimes she needed him to be more of a realist.
And Marlene served up an entire buffet of realism.
“Mile High Club again?” the guard asked, pausing to catch his breath. Josie watched him with a morbid fascination.
“You don’t really think it’s your mom in there, Josie,” Alex said. He caressed her shoulder absent-mindedly, watching the guard. “I mean—”
“Two men in one bathroom with a naked woman?” the guard barked into his walkie-talkie, eyebrows hitting the brim of his hat.
Josie snorted, the sense of dread spreading.
“How could it be anyone else?”
“That sounds more like something Darla would do,” Alex said. “You sure she’s still in Boston and not on this flight?”
Just as Josie was about to reply, the commotion got louder.
“MARLENE!” Josie heard the sense of outrage in her Aunt Cathy’s voice. The airport was small, but not that small. Cathy’s voice could carry. “WHAT IN THE HELL HAPPENED TO YOUR CLOTHES?”
