#Excerpt: FINISH WHAT YOU STARTED by Alexandra Evans

Finish What You Started
Alexandra Evans
Publication date: October 19th 2019
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance, Sports

Tyler Johansen, catcher for the Memphis Blues, always promised himself he would complete his bachelor’s degree. But his online professor is a real pain in the ass.
When Professor Harper Manning is forced to bend the rules for one of her students just because he’s a professional athlete, she’s pissed. Entitled jerk.
Unfortunately he’s the sexiest entitled jerk she’s ever come across, and Ty has made it clear he’s hot for teacher. She could lose her job if they’re caught messing around.
The problem is, he might be worth it.
—

EXCERPT:
“But I have a special deal with the dean.” Ty scooted up on the chair and leaned his elbows on the faded oak of her desk. “See, I play ball, and since I’m having to take this class during the season, I can’t always get my assignments in on time. Sometimes I’m on the road—”
“They don’t have Wi-Fi in your hotels?”
“Yeah, but—”
“You have your laptop or access to a computer when you’re on the road?”
“Most of the time, but—”
“So you had the same opportunity to get this turned in on time that all my other students did, especially since you aren’t carrying a full load on top of working as some students in my classes do.”
He sat back in his chair and scowled. “Well, I do work. Baseball is a full-time job. It’s more than a full-time job, to be perfectly honest, when you factor in workouts, practices, games, interviews, team meetings, and all the other crap that goes along with it.”
“With one class. That’s doable for all the rest of my students, Mr. Johansen, so I expect it to be doable for you as well, special arrangements or not. I think the dean would agree with me on that.”
Harper pushed the essay back toward him and rolled her chair up closer to her desk. She should have done a little jig of victory, but instead she felt a little tinge of…guilt? No, not that. He’d been late on his assignment, and playing ball was no excuse. It was never an excuse for shirking responsibilities. If you wanted something enough, you went all out for it. If her father had taught her nothing else in his miserable life, what little of it he’d actually spent with her, he’d taught her that.

Author Bio:
Alexandra enjoys writing contemporary romances with hot heroes and strong heroines, centered on her favorite sport: baseball.

A former research scientist, Alexandra spends her free time taking care of her husband, teenage daughter, and two doge, a Papillon named Percy, and a St. Bernard mix named Bongo.

Excerpt:
She strolled along the beach for the half-mile to the Fish Shack. She had kicked off her flip-flops, scooped them up and put them in her bag, letting the sand warm her toes as she walked. There was a line already at the take-out window, but it wasn’t outrageously long. At least it wasn’t brutally hot today, and a breeze was blowing off the water, keeping the temperatures down. She got in line and before too long; it was her turn to order.
She stepped up to the window. “Fried clams plate, please.” She was busy digging in her bag for the change purse when she heard a deep, sexy voice. She looked up and stared into the most beautiful blue eyes she’d ever seen.
“Sure thing. That’ll be $7.50,” John said.
Jess stood stock-still, her hand halfway inside the beach bag, her mouth gaping open, staring at the hunky guy at the window. She’d never seen him before. There was no doubt that she would have remembered his dark good looks, broad shoulders, muscular arms, and most especially, that disarming smile.
“Miss, will there be something else?”
Snapping out of her stupor, she shook her head and pulled out her change purse. “Um…no. Sorry about that.” She handed him a $10 bill.
“That’s okay. I’m John,” he said as he gave her back her change.
Jess stuffed the dollar bills in the tip jar, trying to look anywhere except at the guy behind the counter. She was embarrassed that she’d been caught staring, but it was like being hit with a thunderbolt. Those eyes, those perfect white teeth, and that oh-so-sexy voice had stopped her in her tracks. This guy had it all. None of her past boyfriends had ever affected her that way, especially not at first glance.
Boyfriend?
What was she thinking? There was no way this guy was single. And even if he was, she doubted he would be interested in her. Men that looked like him usually had the pick of any woman he wanted and didn’t go for freckled-faced redheads like her.
***
John stared at the delicate beauty standing at the take-out window. The sun was shining behind her and she looked like an angel come down from heaven in her white dress.
When she looked up to pay him, his heart thumped in his chest. She was stunning, with the greenest eyes he’d ever seen. The sprinkling of freckles across her cheeks and nose only added to her beauty.
He’d never seen her before, but he was determined to at least learn her name. Was she a local, or perhaps a tourist from out of town? He had to find out. He hadn’t been affected this way since Anne, but Anne was a lifetime ago. Even the mention of Anne’s name conjured distaste in his mouth. He wasn’t the same man as he was back then and he would not make the same mistake again.

WINNER OF THREE AWARDS
2019 AMERICAN FICTION AWARD
NATIONAL INDIE EXCELLENCY AWARD - Best Legal Thriller OF 2019
SILVER MEDAL WINNER 2019 READERS' FAVORITES AWARDS

Chosen by Wiki.ezvid.com among their list of 10 Gripping and Intelligent Legal Thrillers

The courtroom scenes are wonderfully written...the characters are well described and the author paints a picture of each in the mind of the reader...Strong plot, strong characters and a strong writing style that I really enjoyed. This one is a definite "thumbs-up." Strongly recommend! I look forward to reading additional works by N. Lombardi, Jr. Kim M Aalaie, Author's Den

One of my favorite suspense novels of the year. It will make you question the legal system.
The Eclectic Review

The courtroom action is excellent, trimmed to the most gripping parts of the trial, with plenty of emotional impact...a fairly realistic portrayal of the way small-town US society works...a fast-moving story with plenty of dramatic moments, and a big twist in the final pages.
Crime Review

When a homeless war veteran is beaten to death by the police, stormy protests ensue, engulfing a small New Jersey town. Soon after, three cops are gunned down.

A multi-state manhunt is underway for a cop killer on the loose. And Dr. Tessa Thorpe, a veteran's counselor, is caught up in the chase.

Donald Darfield, an African-American Iraqi war vet, war-time buddy of the beaten man, and one of Tessa's patients, is holed up in a mountain cabin. Tessa, acting on instinct, sets off to find him, but the swarm of law enforcement officers gets there first, leading to Darfield's dramatic capture.

Now, the only people separating him from the lethal needle of state justice are Tessa and ageing blind lawyer, Nathaniel Bodine. Can they untangle the web tightening around Darfield in time, when the press and the justice system are baying for revenge?

Excerpt:

“Mr. Bodine, I’m Hamilton Fiske, deputy district attorney. I’ll be prosecuting this case.”

“Didn’t we meet last year at the meeting of the New Jersey Bar Association?” Bodine asked, as his daughter collected their papers and put them in their briefcase.

“Yes, I believe we did.”

“Thought so. I never forget a voice.”

That comment threw Fiske off-center for a moment. “I just wanted to, well, shake hands so to speak, before we come out fighting.”

“Is your hand out there in the air, waiting for mine? Cause if it is, you can put it back wherever you had it. I don’t shake hands these days. And while you’re at it, you can remove that smug smile off your face. I don’t have to see it, I can tell by your tone. You’ve already pissed me off, and this is just the arraignment. So I’m not exactly in a gentlemanly mood. And if you try to set up my client by having him mingle with the others, there’ll be hell to pay. Getting my drift, son?”

Fighting words for sure, but the word that provoked Fiske the most was the condescending “son,” just as Bodine had figured it would. “Is that a threat, Mr. Bodine?”

Emily tugged at her father’s arm with the covert message that he quit this repartee. He turned to leave, but not before saying, “No, Mr. Fiske, just a consequence.”

#Review: A GIFT OF THE MARQUESS by Darcy Burke

3.5 of 5 stars

I love Ms. Burke's books and this one was a pleasant read. Gabriel, the Marquess of Darlington, is secretly relieved that his wife Poppy has not conceived a child in their three years of marriage. Having lost his mother and sister in childbirth, he's terrified of losing his beloved wife, but Poppy is distraught at not having a child. She longs to be a mother and her sadness clouds her daily mood. This is the second book in the series about three siblings and this one focuses on Poppy and Gabriel. While I enjoyed the book, I wish almost a third of it was not featuring different sex scenes. I would have preferred there was more character development and less sex.

I'm looking forward to the third book and can't to find out why Calder has turned so cold and hostile to everyone that loves him.

I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy and all opinions are my own.

#Excerpt: GRAYTON BEACH DREAMS by Melissa Chambers

Grayton Beach Dreams
Melissa Chambers
(Love Along Hwy 30A series, #5)
Publication date: October 15th 2019
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Having spent his college years and early twenties faithful to his sweetheart who ultimately dumped him for his brother, Jesse Kirby will never again be anyone’s fool. He’s been making up for lost time by sampling every woman he missed out on. But as thirty approaches, the revolving door to his bedroom isn’t doing it for him anymore.
When he meets the altruistic Cassidy Anderson, he realizes it’s time to make some meaning out of his life. Sure, she may only be interested in him for his body and his literary tattoos, but he will make her see him for the man he now knows he can be.
Cassidy Anderson has always lived her life to serve others and dated stable men her own age or older with the same goals in mind. As she considers an offer from one of those stable men, twenty-nine-year-old bartender Jesse Kirby sets his sights on her, giving her options she doesn’t need to consider. It’s been so long since Cassidy has experienced a body and a libido like his that she isn’t sure if she can pass him up. But just for a taste, because a relationship like theirs could only be headed for heartbreak.
—

EXCERPT:
Cassidy glanced around. “Um, can we talk somewhere for just a quick second?”
“Sure,” he said, picking up his board. He led her through the doorway to the stairwell, maneuvering his board through, and then hefted it expertly up onto a wall mount, the muscles in his tattooed arms rippling as he worked. He turned around and faced her, still dripping from the ocean, his shorts sagging, those muscles below the stomach that form a broken V on broad display.
She glanced around at another door that must have exited to the outside, and then to the staircase in front of her. She pointed upward. “So, is this your apartment?”
“Yeah, did you want to…”
“No, no. I just,” she said, inhaling a deep breath, “I just came here to say that I’m sorry about the other night.”
He frowned.
“I think you probably realize that I sort of freaked out a bit after we…” She trailed off, unable to believe that she somehow had lost part of her own vocabulary.
“Had sex?” Jesse asked.
She closed her eyes, the heat seeping up to her ears. “Yes, thank you.” This was ridiculous. He had moved on from her now, was probably onto the next girl already. For all she knew, he’d already slept with some other girl. He was a bartender with an apartment above his bar. How convenient did it get?
She just had to spit this nonsense out so she could move on and never see him again. She’d send Marigold with the cookie order from now on, and if she couldn’t come, Cassidy would hire a courier, or just admit that cookie recipes can be found on the backs of chocolate chip bags.
She met his gaze, trying to garner her courage. “Jesse, what happened the other night…I don’t do that.”
“Okay,” he said, resting his hands on his hips, his six-pack on full display.
Look up, Cassidy. Look up.
“I realize that it’s no big deal and that people have one-night-stands all the time. But I come from a time where that wasn’t as prevalent as it is now, and I’ve never really enjoyed them like many women do.”
He lowered his chin. “You didn’t enjoy yourself?”
She held up both hands. “No, I very much enjoyed myself. I’m just trying to explain why I had such an…” He inched toward her, causing her to lose track of what she’d been saying. “Ungraceful exit,” she somehow managed to finish saying. Despite her pleas with herself, she looked down at his stomach. “Is that a raven tattoo?”
He touched it with both sets of his fingertips. “Yeah, I’m sort of a book nerd. I love Poe.”
Her exhale of the breath she’d been holding was loud and included a little chuckle, because this was just getting ridiculous. A book nerd? Was he kidding her?
Her gaze slid to the other side which showcased a tattoo of a self-effacing quote about masculinity. She studied it, her brain reaching for its place but coming up short. She met his gaze, making a question with her eyebrows.
“Hemingway,” he said. “The Old Man and the Sea.”
Geez. The fact that he loved books enough to plaster tattoos celebrating them on his body just made her even more fascinated with him. Stop it, Cassidy.
She shook her head, trying to clear her brain for the task ahead. “So anyway, I’m really…” He moved in closer, his hand on the wall beside her head. She swallowed hard, then continued, “sorry that I…slept…with…”
His lips were on hers at the same time her hands cupped his shoulders, squeezing them for dear life. His lips tasted like the ocean, but his warm tongue on hers tasted like him…all man and all need. He pressed his hips into hers for just a moment, and then pulled away. “Sorry, I don’t want to get you wet.”

What Really Goes Into A Great Author Website? by Matt Ziranek

Some authors have simple, plain looking sites that seem to get huge traffic and engagement. Others have amazing looking high tech, design masterpieces that barely even get visited. Clearly there’s more to it than simply a good looking design and graphics or photography.
Along with my Agency, Rocket Expansion, we’ve been building websites for authors and creatives for years now. We’ve picked up a thing or two about what works in an author website and what doesn’t, and it’s definitely a whole lot more than a pretty homepage.
The Important Aspects Of An Author Website
I’ve just published an extensive resource on author websites with 67 author website examples and a thorough walkthrough of what I think is great about each. It will give plenty of opportunity to see how these points I’m about to mention actually work.
Easy Navigation
This goes beyond just having a tidy menu bar. Your site needs to be well organised in a logical fashion. If you don’t do this, no one's going to be able to find all of your great content (which we’ll get to shortly.)
Clarity
Similar to navigation but in a broader sense, your site needs to be understandable and feel easy to use. Don’t leave it to chance that your visitor may click on something in your crowded home page that you want them to. Make the clickable areas of the page extremely obvious by making them stand out clearly. You can use strong contrast or color to make this distinction.
Make each page have a focus. What do you want your visitors to do? Make it really clear and more of them will.
Branding
Branding is not just your logo, your colors or even your name or slogan. Branding is the entire communication package that your website makes use of to make you come across as uniquely you.
Branding is an opportunity to truly differentiate yourself from others in your genre and other authors in general. Make your site clean and clear for sure, but also have fun with who you are when you create your website.
Stephanie Meyer calls her blogs “Obsessions”. Each blog post is “5 Reasons We’re Obsessed with_____”. It’s a light fun touch, but also a good example of a part of her branding. She’s fun, and well, obsessed!
Author Funnel
If your website isn’t actually contributing to growing your audience and selling your books, then how much of marketing tool is it?
I’m not a huge fan of the term “funnel”. It feels somehow spammy or manipulative, like herding cattle through a narrow chute. But when I started getting more involved in marketing I learned that the sales funnel concept is actually regarded as one of the oldest established principles in marketing, first mentioned in 1898.
A sales funnel is very simply a process that takes someone who has never heard of you on a series of steps that build the relationship until the become a buyer. Then the relationship is nurtured into them buying again, promoting you to others and your book sales sky rocket. Sounds great right?
In a digital age a sales funnel can be as simple as giving a highly incentivised reason to join your mailing list. Offer a fantastically valuable resource for free. Then you can get a second chance to build a relationship with your website visitors and they can get to know you.
Digital marketers often cite that on average it takes at least 7 interactions with a customer to get a sale. If you can convince a visitor to sign up for your newsletter, you’ll be a whole lot more likely to get these 7 touch points and therefore get more book sales.
Create a welcome newsletter series with an email marketing software. Make your series packed with useful and interesting resources your ideal reader would be interested in.
Getting this right means the difference between having a glorified book brochure online, and a sales machine that does your marketing for you on autopilot.
SEO
Search engine optimization can seem technical and confusing. It’s not.
50% of all traffic on the internet comes from search engines. You’d be stupid to ignore them.
There are 3 simple, important rules for SEO success:
  • Create epic content
  • Optimize it for your keyword
  • Get others to link back to it
Great content means content that entertains, educates and inspires. It also usually has the obvious quality of some real work having been put into it. Anyone can rehash someone else's work. Writing a few thousand words of original, well referenced, well written, well edited content gold will mean people will actually read it, and this is the first step to getting noticed on Google.
Optimising each post for a keyword is not that hard. If you’re using a WordPress site, use a plugin called Yoast SEO. Add your keyword in the “focus keyphrase”. Then follow the prompts in the “SEO Analysis” till it turns green.
Finally, links to your posts are the strongest signal to search engines that your site is valuable enough to show in search results. Getting links is simply making an effort in the author community to share your stuff with others who may be interested. Guest post on others blogs, just like I’m doing now. You’ll get more exposure in general, and you’ll get links back to your blog and website.
Fan Resources
Finally without a really good reason for visitors to come to your website and keep coming back, it’s not going to be very helpful to you as a resource.
As a creative person you already have a fantastic advantage over 99% of the internet. You can have great ideas and you can write! There are so many ways to create valuable resources that will make your website a place where everyone wants to hang out and keep coming back. The point is to set out a strategy that engages your audience in the long term and stick to it.
Now that you know what makes an author website great, take a look at some great author website examples in which I show how all the above can be put into action.

#Excerpt: ONE MORE SONG by C.M. Seabrook

One More Song
C.M. Seabrook
Publication date: October 10th 2019
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

My band, Absinthe, is sent to the middle of nowhere to get our shit together.
It’s time to keep my cock in my pants, my head on straight, and to stay out of trouble.
Hard to do when the landlord is Ember Skye.
Long brown hair, eyes flecked with gold.
One look and she has me, heart and soul.
Fire burns.

But when I’m with this girl?
There’s a heat I’ve never known before.
She’s a single mom carrying it all on her own with an ex on her heels.
I want to help, be the man she needs.
I’m all wrong for her.
She knows it and I know it.
But people change.
Or do they?

I’ve run out of second chances.
But we’re Ember & Ash.
It’s time to fan this flame.
—

EXCERPT:
“You can’t stay here,” I say, my voice shaky, because I know there’s no way I’ll be able to afford the reimbursement. I already spent a small chunk of the money Maryll gave me on this month’s bills.
With his back to me, his fingers expertly dancing over the keys as he plays the scales. I try not to notice the way his muscles bunch and tense under the fabric of his t-shirt.
“When was the last time you had this tuned?”
“I…uh…I don’t know.” I shake my head, knowing he’s trying to distract me. “Look. I’m sorry for the inconvenience, but I’m sure you can find somewhere else to go.” Even as I say the words, I can hear the lack of conviction in them. I need the money.
The music stops, and he turns, straddling the piano bench. And when those gray eyes are on me again, my body betrays me, and I can feel the flush rising to my cheeks.
I try to fight it, the attraction, the heat, the pull, but it’s impossible. And I wonder if he feels it too, or if he has this effect on every woman. I have a feeling it’s the latter because I can’t read anything in those stormy eyes.
“No,” he finally says, his words absolute, like he’s used to getting what he wants. “I like it here.” Those gorgeous lips of his twitch up slightly. “I was worried that this place would be boring. But this could be fun.”
I scoff. “Fun?” That’s one word for it. Millie would find this entire situation hilarious. But I’m not Millie with her heart-on-her-sleeve attitude. I’m Ember – a woman who always has responsibilities.
And as I look into Ash’s eyes, I realize I don’t have a choice.
“Yeah, fun,” he says with a dare in his voice and a promise in his eyes.
A promise.
My track record with promises is fifty-fifty. And right now, I can’t handle another thing in my life breaking.
I have no choice but to try and make this work. Not just for me. But for Cadence.

#Review: HOW TO BREW THE PERFECT KISS by Shana Galen

  5 of 5 stars

This review is for Shana Galen's story, HOW TO BREW A PERFECT KISS. This was such a heartwarming story. Thomas Gaines is a self-made black man in London working his way up from server to owning his own coffee and tobacco shop. He was kind and considerate of everyone he met and always try to help those folks who were down on their luck. When he meets Raeni Sawyer, he knew he had met one special lady. I loved how their love story developed and my only complaint was that the story wasn't longer!! I wanted to keep reading about them.

Ms. Galen is a master storyteller and she draws the reader in with fully fleshed-out characters that we want to root while they find their happily ever after. I love Ms. Galen's books and can't wait to read her next release.

I voluntarily read the advanced reader copy and all opinions are my own.

#Review: SOMEONE TO REMEMBER by Mary Balogh

   3 of 5 stars

This is a sweet novella although nothing much happens plot-wise. There is a lot of self reflections on both Matilda's and Charles' part as they navigate finding each other again later in life. They were separated early in their lives and now 30+ years later, they are finally reunited. I enjoyed watching Matilda's transformation from a shadow of herself who fussed over her mother to a vibrant and happy woman in love.

Having not read any of the previous books in the series, I found the beginning of the book very confusing when all the relatives are listed. All in all, it was a quick and enjoyable read, but I would recommend reading at least some of the previous books in the series to understand better all the family relations.

I voluntarily read the advanced read copy and all opinions are my own.

#Excerpt: WINTER KING by J.S. Dark

Genres: Adult, Fantasy, Paranormal, Romance

His court is dying, and she’s his only hope …

When Cade discovers that Amber is his mate, can he carry out his plan to sacrifice her? Or will the malicious plotting of others within the court leave Amber trapped in the mystical realm with nowhere to run?
Winter King is a standalone steamy paranormal romance with a HEA. Each book in the Wyth Courts series will feature a different couple, with a complete story, and a HEA. Suited for readers 18+ due to language and sex scenes.
—

EXCERPT:
I hadn’t expected movement in the middle of the night, but sure enough, the female human left her apartment building in a hurry just after four in the morning. She hugged a thin jacket over a tee and sweatpants. A second later, a taxi showed up and she boarded it.
Where in the freezing ice was she going at this time?
Regardless of my thoughts, I changed into my wolf form and followed her.
Just like I had done all day long.
Right after Haera told me how to save my people, I used my medallion to teleport to the human world. Haera had helped. She cast a spell over me, saying I would end up near the one I needed to save my court.
A selfless, pure-hearted human.
When she told me that, I scoffed. A selfless, pure-hearted human? Those were like myths. They didn’t exist. But Haera assured me I just had to get near the human and I would know.
The moment I saw Amber leaving the restaurant after being fired, with her long, black hair whipping on the chilly wind and her bright green eyes looking up at the clear skies full of hope and wonder, I knew it was her. Not because she was absolutely stunning and I couldn’t take my eyes off her, but because the pull I felt deep in my core told me that she was the one I needed.
She was the only one who could save my people.
