Can you
give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series?
Broken
Promises is the first in my new Brianna Lane series. It’s definitely
darker and edgier than my other releases, but the swoon is still the same. In
the story, Bri and Quinn go out on a date to the movies where everything goes
crazy! Unknown to them both, the Fae are invading, using a charm to influence
humans and turn their violent tendencies loose. The streets resemble the
apocalypse as strangers and loved ones turn on each other. Bri finds out
although she’s immune … Quinn isn’t, changing him from a devoted boyfriend into
someone more sinister. With the clock ticking, Bri races to find a way to save
him—to save their love.
Do you belong
to a critique group? Have they helped improve your writing?
I don’t belong to a critique group but I do have trusted
friends that I rely on while writing. I value their opinions so I never
hesitate to bounce ideas off them or send snippets I’m working on. They’re
amazing—readers and writers themselves so I’m really grateful for their
support. Sometimes it’s hard to see the whole picture when you’re so close to
the story and they offer encouragement, advice, and a different perspective.
What is
your writing process?
It all starts with a spark. It doesn’t matter where I am, an
idea will come and then slowly unravel in my head. Characters soon appear—each
voice telling me their names and who they are. Usually I’ll stew a little or
talk it out with someone but once it clicks, I write everything down. Most
times this happens while I’m already working on something else so when I
finally get a chance to look at my notes, I start thinking of scenes and what
will happen. It’s kind of like a movie so I loosely outline each chapter—letting
the characters flesh it out when I’m actually writing it. Then it’s all down to
getting it out of my head and into a word document.
Did you
hire an editor to review your manuscript before publishing?
Always. I like each story to be seen by as many eyes as
possible—me, an editor, my business partner, and sometimes a proof reader. It’s
really important the story is the best it can be and shines when it’s released.
Of course, nothing is ever perfect but I strive to give the reader a great
experience … I want them swooning and enjoying the book.
What have
you’ve learned during your self-publishing journey?
That I love being an author! I was actually working in the
Mental Health field and was studying to become a therapist when Fate/Divine
Providence/whatever-you-want-to-call-it stepped in and introduced me to my best
friend. I’m an avid reader so making the career change seemed so natural and I’ve
loved every minute since. I really enjoy exploring my imagination and being
creative. Something I’ve learned along the way is to never be afraid about
stepping out of my comfort zone. I’m naturally a shy person but since blogging
and now publishing, every day is a new experience and I’ve met so many amazing
people. I can’t imagine doing anything else.
Besides
Amazon, are there any other sites where your books are for sale?
Yes, all of my books are available through Amazon, Barnes
& Noble, Smashwords, Kobo, Apple, Sony, and Diesel.
What kinds
of marketing [twitter, facebook, blog, forums] are you involved with for
promoting your book(s)?
I’m a heavy Facebook user. I love being able to start up a
discussion, share photos, and generally get to know everyone. It’s an easy
social media to connect with people and be myself. I also use Twitter (@thebookishsnob)
but I’m such a chatterbox that 140 characters isn’t enough. I also have a blog
I try to keep updated. (www.belindaboring.com)
For those wanting to find me on Facebook, I’m under Bookish
Snob and Belinda Boring – Author. I post a variety of things—day to day stuff,
updates on what I’m writing and marketing PLUS the ever torturous teasers.
Those are popular because I like keeping everyone guessing. It’s not unusual to
see people calling me cruel and threatening to hunt me down! haha
Do you
find it difficult to juggle your time between marketing your current book and
writing your next book?
Some times more than others. I try to keep on a schedule so
I can accomplish everything I need to but there are days where it’s impossible
to get it all done. That’s when I wish for another me or minions who can help
with some of the smaller things so I can focus on writing. I definitely find
myself juggling but it’s all worth it in the end. That’s one of the reasons I
love blog tours because each tour has readers willing to promote and share your
books. The help they provide is invaluable and needed.
Besides
writing, do you have any other passions?
I love reading (of course) and spending time with family and
friends. I love snuggling with my husband and watching our favorite shows—The
Voice, Legend of the Seeker, The Vampire Diaries, and superhero movies. I love
going on road trips because we crank up the stereo to sing along or talk about
anything and everything. I also adore going to football games. In fact, I’m a
pretty passionate person and like filling my life with things I enjoy. Life’s
too short to get stuck doing things that don’t make you happy, right?
What’s
next for you?
Right now, I’m working on my next release, Testing Fate. It’s book #3 in my Mystic
Wolves series and I’m excited to see what everyone thinks. I’ve been posting a
few teasers on Facebook and laughing at some of the theories people have. It’s
been so much fun to write.
After that, I’m not quite sure what story comes next—it
depends on which voice is the loudest. It may be a new adult contemporary or
historical fantasy. We’ll see what happens
Thanks for having me today!
