Interview with Sage Steadman, ANN, NOT ANNIE

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series?
It’s a YA contemporary romance. It centered around Ann, whose high school experience is not turning out how she had planned. She’s depressed, she’s frustrated with things happening at home and she, and every other girl in school, has a massive crush on Jacob Waters. Jacob is basically the most sought after guy in school and she’s a little obsessed with him. She spends a lot of time in detention though and feels like an outcast so she doesn’t think she has a chance. Danny is interested in Ann, but he’s kind of a loner and Ann isn’t sure she wants to let him in. The story is told by a mysterious, and hilarious, narrator that we don’t meet until the end.

Do you have a favorite character?
I loved writing Danny, he’s so thoughtful and funny and wise, but just a little bit odd. I loved tapping into his energy. He’s a little bit of an amalgamation of all the people in my life who make me laugh.

What is your writing process? Do you listen to music or do you like silence?
Most of the time I prefer silence but that isn’t always an option so that’s when I pop in my ear buds and listen to Jane Eyre, The Album Leaf, Sigur Ros. Something that is emotional but usually doesn’t have singing to distract me.

Do you outline your story or just go where your muse takes you?
I do both. I usually have a basic outline that I don’t follow. As you write the story it evolves and so you have to go where it wants to take you sometimes.

Did you hire an editor to review your manuscript before publishing?
Absolutely. My books go through several editing processes, story editing, copyediting and the final proofread. I don’t want my readers being pulled out of the story by an error I didn’t see. I want to make sure they’re able to be fully absorbed in the experience.

What have you learned during your self-publishing journey?
I’m always surprised by who ends up reading and liking my book. I go into it thinking my target audience is one group of people and then receive messages from all sorts of people. Like my first novel, “Snowflake Obsidian” I thought only women would read it, but I received a lot of messages from men who read it and loved it. I’ve also had a lot of interesting magazines write about me as well. Like, one time I think an Asian Woman’s magazine wrote something up about one of my books. So you just never know. I always used to tell people I’d meet that my book wasn’t for them. They’d say, “Oh that sounds interesting. I think I’ll read it.” And I’m like, “No, don’t. You’re not the target audience.” I try not to do that anymore.

What kinds of marketing [twitter, facebook, blog, forums] are you involved with for promoting your book(s)?
I have a twitter, facebook and goodreads account. I also market on Amazon and through BookBub.

Social Media Sites:
FACEBOOK
GOODREADS
TWITTER

Do you find it difficult to juggle your time between marketing your current book and writing your next book?
Yes. It can be quite difficult. When I’m writing I disappear from the world, social media included and it’s hard to find a balance between connecting with my fans and writing my next book. So if I’m not active on social media it’s usually because I’m working on something.

What advice would you give a new author just entering into the self-publishing arena?
Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there, but don’t rush through the publishing and marketing process either.

Besides writing, do you have any other passions?
Hiking, baking, yoga, eating cakes by myself, kissing dogs on the lips, talking to the TV while watching Game of Thrones.

Ann, Not Annie
Sage Steadman
Publication date: September 20th 2017
Genres: Contemporary, Romance, Young Adult

Ann, not Annie, is tired of her nominal existence and has vowed to turn things around by dating the hottest guy in school, Jacob Waters. Easier said than done since Jacob isn’t even aware she exists. The truth is, due to Ann’s lively temper she spends more time in detention with the rest of the school rejects than she does fantasizing about Jacob Waters wearing spandex.
Her best friend and devout alien believer, Lisa, doesn’t like the changes she’s seeing in her BFF. Neither does Danny Feller, a fellow detention inmate and resident lost boy who has started keeping an extra watchful and unwanted eye on Ann.
When a chance encounter in an empty hallway changes everything, Ann finds all her dreams coming true and she is well on her way to living the perfect life she’s always wanted. But appearances aren’t always what they seem and Ann is going to have to face not just cold hard facts, but also her past.

This book is on SALE for $1.99 during the tour.

#Excerpt: FALLING FOR YOU by Charlotte Blake

Falling For You
Charlotte Blake
(Great Escapes, #1)
Publication date: September 12th 2017
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Sometimes love finds you whether you want it to or not …
Grace Clark is a star at her job as an art director at Boston’s biggest advertising firm. But inside she’s still mourning the loss of her sister two years ago. Losing Mia and a failed engagement have been enough to keep her heart on lockdown ever since.
Luke Arnold is tired of relationships that don’t go anywhere. Usually women are all over him, but it’s been years since he’s met someone he could really fall for.
But when he sees Grace from across the room at the Redview Lodge, he can’t keep his eyes off her. They meet in the New Hampshire mountains over Thanksgiving, and they find in one another something that neither of them expected.
18+
NOTE: This STAND-ALONE romance contains very steamy love scenes. All of the books in the Great Escapes series can be read in any order.

EXCERPT:
Mia turned up the radio as her sedan flew across the slick road.
Let’s Go Crazy.
She was excited about the trip home. She had been living in New York, and despite the close proximity to Boston, she hadn’t seen her sister, Grace, for four months. Mia was just finishing school, and between internships and the huge amount of work she had been putting in to earn her MBA, there just wasn’t any time. She was lucky to have a sister like Grace. She understood when Mia was too busy to talk. And with Grace, she never needed to feel pressured to have a perfect relationship. When they did get a chance to see each other, it was as if they had never been apart.
Though lately Mia had been trying to make extra time to connect with her heartbroken sister, at least on the phone. Grace was just getting on her feet again after a long depression. Her fiancé had pulled a fast one on her, and there had been a few months of Mia visiting her often, trying to coax her off the couch and into therapy. Grace had been absent from work long enough that her job was on the line. She had some savings, but not enough to last her more than a few months.
Grace had resisted at first, but Mia had seen this kind of thing before and had known exactly what to do. In the end, she’d found the right doctor and therapist for her sister and then harassed her until she made, and kept, appointments with them. It took some time, but eventually she had started to come back to herself. Mia credited the meds more than anything, though she knew Grace hated having to take them.
She was back to work now, though, busy again, and they still talked a couple times a week to touch base, more if Grace needed someone to cry to. Mia was relieved that she would have a chance to focus on her for a bit, and was glad the mellow holiday at home wouldn’t distract them too much. There were lots of tears in those weekly calls, and though they’d ebbed away a bit, she couldn’t wait to wrap her arms around her sister in a big bear hug.
She and Grace had grown up at their parents’ place in Boston. It had been even longer since she had seen them, and she couldn’t wait to catch up on all the family gossip. Her mom tended to try to keep family secrets just that: secret. But her dad had let slip that her aunt’s daughter had been working, no joke, as a stripper. Everyone in the family was in a tizzy about it, but were too afraid to confront her. Mia would have loved the opportunity to get the details first hand, but really she had been relieved to find out that her aunt and cousin would not be joining them for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Probably too embarrassed, she thought.
She laughed aloud as the music played. She had never been close with her cousin, but Angie had been known to jump around from school to school, project to project, job to job. Whatever the story was, Mia was sure there would be plenty of secondhand lurid details once she pulled into the driveway. She’d get her mom to talk, even if it took all week.
It was getting late, nearly eleven, and she was eager to get there. She had expected to arrive by nine, but no such luck. The traffic out of the city had lasted for hours. But now she was on the move again. The snow had turned to rain, which meant the roads were pretty clear now, and she pushed on the gas a little harder.
The music on the radio changed, and a moment later Winter Wonderland was blasting through her speakers.
“Aw, yuck!” she shouted at the radio, wrenching the volume down.
It wasn’t even Thanksgiving yet, and already with the Christmas music! The last thing she needed was to get that junk spinning through her head all night long.
She picked up her phone to switch to her playlist. She was an expert at her phone, and could make most of the selections, even texting, without even looking at the thing. One day they’d probably just implant the information into people’s brains somehow, but for now she just had to wing it like everyone else.
But it was late, and she was on the freeway. She needed to look at the screen to select some different music. She checked around her for cops and then waited for a straight stretch of road. She held the phone up to the steering wheel so she could glance back and forth between the screen and the road, scrolling down the list, searching for something classic, something she could sing to, to wake her up a little for the last hour of the drive. More Prince, maybe.
Out of the corner of her eye she saw a movement, something white speeding by her passenger side window. A motorcycle? No.
It was a truck, and it was going way too fast. He was going to cut her off. She dropped her phone and blared her horn, then watched in horror as it tipped onto two wheels, about to flip over right in front of her.
How was this happening?
She steered right to get out of the way. The back end of the truck clipped her car at just the right spot. Just the wrong spot.
She was airborne. There was no sound but for her own blood pumping, ringing in her ears.
Time slowed down.
As her car flipped through the air again and again, her thoughts went blank. Adrenaline rushed through her body as the first airbag went off, but when the car smashed upside down onto the pavement, she only registered the pain.
And then it was over.
She was gone.

Excerpt: DARK GENIUS by H. Peter Alesso

In one well-lit corner, Professor Stanley Prost sat at his desk studiously examining a computer screen. His long straight nose, jutting prominent chin, and carbon black eyes, gave the appearance of a man not to be trifled with. He held his hand to his brow, masking his eyes, as if to conceal his innermost thoughts. However, his red pitted skin and the twitchy lips destroyed any semblance of a distinguished pose. His overweight frame and slumped shoulders made him look like a bloated figure despite his close-cropped hair and clean-shaven face. An expensive, but ill-fitting suit, hung like a sack over his body leaving an overall appearance of discomfort.

While Prost rapidly slid his finger across the computer screen, Lawrence stood waiting like a statue. He let his gaze wandered to the scene visible from the window—scampering students making their way on their personal college adventure.

Finally, without extending his hand, or looking directly at his visitor, Prost ordered, “Sit.”

“Thank you, Professor,” said Lawrence in a clear strong voice, despite a peculiar stir of emotions—doubt, tension, apprehension. He had prior experience with this man—with unhappy consequences.

Prost leaned forward and curled his lip as he spat out the words, “Your postdoc appointment was made by the Professor Lloyd—during my absence—without any input from me.”

Lawrence’s eyes darkened to match his tousled hair, but he remained quiet for what seemed a portentous moment. He clenched his teeth and was self-conscious of a bead of sweat on his brow.

Prost waved his right hand in the air and said, “I took no pleasure in the failing grades I gave you, some years ago. Your dismissal from MIT was unfortunate, but I wasn’t the only professor who was disenchanted with a prodigy who skipped classes, took exams cavalierly, and disrupted class with impertinent questions.”

Lawrence shifted in his chair, uncomfortably.

I’m to be rebuked for the sins of the past.

BLURB:

To the insatiably curious—science is the greatest adventure. So, when scientists at CERN announced the discovery of the ‘God’ particle in 2012, all the world wondered, “How did they find it?”

A decade later, despite his past academic failures and egregious family circumstance, Andrew Lawrence embarked on a journey of discovery, competing against rival scientists to be the first to solve the greatest unsolved mystery of the universe—dark matter—and win the ultimate prize; the Nobel.

Emma Franklin, a PhD candidate at Harvard, developed software for detecting particle reactions using a quantum computer. To the amazement and excitement of the scientific community, her work revealed two possible bumps in the energy curve that were not predicted by any established theory.

At MIT, Lawrence created a model that predicted the scattering processes of a dark matter supersymmetry particle. Though his early work was disparaged, he improved his theory and found that it predicted the data Emma had discovered. Their professional collaboration deepened into a personal relationship, but when critical data was stolen, Emma found evidence that incriminated Lawrence. Though she withheld the impeaching material from the authorities, she felt she could no longer trust him.

Despite their troubled partnership, and notwithstanding the complexities of nature, Lawrence and Emma persevered against the egos, jealousy, and envy of rivals, on their exhilarating quest to find the ‘Holy Grail’ of physics

#Excerpt: BILLIONAIRE EVER AFTER by various authors

Tia Morris
Billionaire Puppy Love

A sexy, busy corporate CEO and billionaire hires an attractive woman as his live-in pet sitter when a basket of puppies is dumped at his corporate office by his zany aunt who wants him to settle down and find love.

Excerpt

This was a date, not a business meeting, and she’d taken the job as his pet sitter in hopes of being his PA. Well, they could spend time together, and she would keep things very professional. Friendly, but not romantic.

They stopped to admire the silvery light of the moon shining on the nearly flat ocean. Emma sighed and plopped onto the sand.

Max sat next to her. “I was going to be a gentleman and remove my jacket so you wouldn’t get your dress sandy. And then I remembered I didn’t wear a jacket.”

She gave him a shy smile. “I like you in these clothes better than a suit.”

He leaned close. “Look at that moon,” he murmured, sliding an arm around her waist.

And then he was stroking a hand down her back, his touch assured and confident, but amid the hunger on his face was absolute tenderness.

The tender look evaporated all her resolve. Emma fell backwards onto the sand on her side. Max did the same, facing her.

She didn’t care if her dress was stained or that sand covered her bare legs. All that mattered was this moment…and Max.

“You’re so cute,” he murmured, cupping her cheek.

Emma wrinkled her nose. “Puppies are cute. I’m not a puppy.”

“When you do that little thing with your eyes…”

“You mean when I roll them because you’re comparing me to a pet?”

“Hush,” he said softly. “You mean a lot to me, Em. I haven’t felt this way about a woman in a very long time. You’re sweet and generous and beautiful, inside and out.”

Emma gazed up at him as the waves lapped at their feet.

“Em, I’m going to kiss you now.”

Courtney Runion Hunt
A Bridesmaid for the Billionaire

Being a bridesmaid in her best friend’s wedding means Jenny Malone will have to face her college sweetheart. Finn Jones shattered her heart when he left her behind on graduation day. Over the years since Jenny and Finn parted, he’s grown up and made himself a billionaire in the process. When they help their best friend elope in the islands, will Jenny and Finn find their second chance at love or will it be just another island fling?

Excerpt:

"I want a billionaire too.” A bedraggled Jenny Malone greeted her best friend when she opened the front door of her penthouse in Thorne Tower. Pausing in the glorious marble entryway, perfumed with the rich scent of lilies and roses from the enormous display centered on a carved wood table near the elevator, Jenny tossed her sodden cheap black umbrella into the stand by the door and slipped off her soaked pumps. When her bare feet pressed against the chilled marble floor, she shivered. Even though it was only early October, the Manhattan night outside pelted down cold rain from an indifferent sky. She’d gotten soaked on her dash from the subway.

"Bad date with your tinderfella?" Callie Matthews led her friend into the sumptuously decorated penthouse that was now her home. In June, just as school ended for the year, Ashton Thorne hired Callie to care for his son, Oliver, over the summer. As a struggling kindergarten teacher with space in both her schedule and her bank account, Callie accepted the challenge. Within just a few weeks, Ash and Callie fell madly in love. Now, her friend and former co-worker lived in the lap of luxury with a diamond that cost more than Jenny’s outstanding student loans winking on her finger.

Jenny wasn’t jealous or even envious. She loved Callie like the sister she’d never had. But, there was a tiny part of Jenny that wished it was her getting breakfast served on silver platters instead of grabbing a stale bagel at the local bodega. Or being driven around Manhattan in a climate-controlled private limo instead of taking the crowded subway to work, smashed in with the other bleary-eyed commuters. And, of course, Jenny would love for a hot, handsome, sexy guy to look at her the way Ash looked at Callie. If he happened to be ridiculously wealthy, so much the better.

And why not wish for the moon while she was at it?

#Review: HIGHLAND FLAME by Mary Wine

  4 of 5 stars

Diocail Gordon is now Laird of clan Gordon, but he's inherited a rundown castle in desperate need of repairs. His miserly uncle starved his people and Diocail is determined to set everything right. On his tour of his tenants he finds Lady Jane Stanley, stranded, barefoot and only clad in her shift. His honor does not allow him to leave her on her own. Thus begins the back and forth of their arguing and Jane's determination to return to her father's home now that she's recently widowed. However, Diocail has other ideas and he wants to keep Jane for himself.

This book kept my interest very well and I read it in one sitting. I loved Diocail's code of honor, but Jane feels like he's just trying to control her. Jane is a feisty lass who's always done what was expected of her and she's tired of being controlled by men. Ms. Wine is a talented author and she gives us great insight into what both characters are feeling. I thoroughly enjoyed this story.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

#Excerpt: UNCHARTED WATERS by Micah Persell

Her pillow would not stop wiggling. She gritted her teeth, furrowing her brow. Cracking one eye, she found herself staring at flannel. A short distance away, her hand lay sprawled across a row of buttons. As she watched, her hand rose and fell.

Ah, not a pillow, then. James.

She opened her other eye and raised her head a bit, gazing down at their bodies. She was all over him, plastered against his side with her arm across his chest and her leg across his thighs.

She didn’t know what had happened to James’s fastidious blanket wall, but she’d probably had something to do with its demise. She craned around enough to look over her shoulder without relinquishing her hold on her lumberjack pillow.

The blanket was on the floor beside the bed.

Interview with Miriam Newman, THE CHRONICLES OF ALCINIA

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series?
The Chronicles of Alcinia is a book bundle including my three historical fantasy novels.  In Book I, The King’s Daughter, Tarabenthia of Alcinia should grow to inherit her father’s throne by the rocky cliffs of the sea.  When invaders seize her land, what will she sacrifice in the name of love?  In Book II, Heart of the Earth, the Northern Prince who has always wanted Tia saves her life.  But will the price of his protection be too high?  And finally in Book III, Ice Maiden, readers who wondered about the fate of Tia’s oldest son have their answer.

Do you have a favorite character?
The King’s Daughter introduces General Sergius Magistri, my favorite character.  My background in psychiatric social work was very helpful in creating a character who may be mad, a genius, or both.  It is up to the reader to decide.

How long before you got your offer of representation/your first contract? Was it for your first novel?
It took three months and actually my first contract was for another book, Confessions of the Cleaning Lady.  That was written as a “lighter” novel in between Books I and II of The Chronicles.  But, interestingly, it got the first offer.  Many people had told me that would probably be the case.  They advised going first with a “fluffier” book before unleashing my Muse on an unsuspecting public.  I had to laugh…but it worked.

Are you currently under a traditional publishing contract for future books or do you have manuscripts that you will self-publish? Are you doing both?
Actually, I am doing both.  Most of my books remain with my first publisher (there have been two others).  And I self published a science fiction novella.

If you used a graphic designer/publisher’s designer, how involved were you during the creative process for your cover?
My publisher’s cover artists created all the covers for the three books of The Chronicles.  But I was thrilled to discover the photo that became the cover for bundle.  I think it totally captures the essence of the books.

Do you outline your story or just go where your muse takes you?
I am totally a seat-of-the-pants writer.  I have long since discovered the Muse is in control and will write the book if I just get out of her way.

Besides writing, do you have any other passions?
I am very much involved in animal rescue and am fortunate enough to live on a small farm where there is room for the dogs, cats and horses that invariably make their way into my life.

What’s next for you?
My next novella, Dark Child, is being released even as we speak.  It is a Bardic-style retelling of the ancient Irish story of Deirdre of the Sorrows, as told to me by my grandmother many years ago.  I think I would very much enjoy expanding it into a full-length novel at some time in the future if my Muse is willing to put up with the necessary research.  She tends to be a bit impatient.

BLURB:

Available for the first time as an e-book bundle, the award-winning historical fantasy series The Chronicles of Alcinia weaves a tale of war, history, passion and romance. Sometimes heart-wrenching, always powerful, this is a tale of heroes and the women who loved them.
