#Excerpt: VERITAS by Quinn Coleridge

Veritas
Quinn Coleridge
Publication date: July 13th 2017
Genres: Adult, Fantasy, Historical

The ghosts are angry, thinking I’ve neglected them.
Do not forget us, they call out from the grave.
I won’t, I promise them. Upon my life, I won’t.
Being a demigoddess in 1892 Stonehenge, Colorado isn’t all one might suppose, especially when the dead are involved. Yet as Veritas of the Rocky Mountain sovereignty, it is Hester Grayson’s calling to help restless spirits cross over by bringing their killers to justice. Blind and pale as an albino, she dwells on the fringes of the nouveau riche, working with her telepathic beau Tom Craddock to catch the guilty.
When a young woman is brutally murdered, Hester and Tom are determined to solve the case as they have every other. But this one demands more. The killer wears many faces and wields greater magic than even Hester possesses. All sleuthing stops, however, when Tom is gravely wounded, and Hester is cast out of her parent’s mansion into the brutal squalor of an asylum.
At the mercy of an insane doctor, surrounded by agitated ghosts, Hester fights to maintain her own sanity by planning her escape and the downfall of her enemies. Can she achieve her goal and expose the madman who sent her to hell? Or will he continue his bloody reign in Stonehenge?

EXCERPT:
My prayer for relief goes unanswered, and faces flash through my mind. Those I saw in my last vision, the one initiated when the doctor touched my skin. Men, women, old, young—they appear and blur a moment later, shifting into the next person. All of Faust’s victims are deep-branded inside me. They are angry, thinking I’ve neglected them.
Do not forget us, they call out from the grave. I won’t, I promise them. Upon my life, I won’t.
The ghosts tell me to find the Book and steal it. Escape the asylum and expose Faust to the world. Let him answer for every crime, they say, condemned by his own words. If only these spirits could be a bit more specific. How exactly do I escape to do their bidding? Have they any suggestions? But the dead only wail and cry for justice. Blasted ghosts always leave the finer points of the plan for me to figure out.
Further enraged by my hesitation, they cause me to burn hotter. All right, all right, I reply through my psyche. As you wish, I so promise. Truth vibrates through the Pit, and the dead finally set my body free. They have accepted my vow, for the moment, but might be less forgiving tomorrow if I don’t take action. I work for a very impatient crowd.
Most people belong to another in some capacity, as a daughter or son, a sister, spouse, or neighbor, but the inmates of this place have been forgotten. They have no one to speak for them, or to avenge their wrongs. And so I’m here, dumb and blind, to serve as the mouthpiece of the wretched, whether I like it or not. That brazen hussy Fate does love a paradox.
Ironically, serving the dead gives me a reason to live, to go on breathing each day. It answers Hamlet’s eternal question of whether to be or not to be with an affirmative. That is why I crawl about the Pit on my knees, searching for a palm-sized piece of metal. It has been hidden and used many times by the inmates before me. I find the broken iron strip and turn toward the northern wall. The rough surface is covered with spider webs and dirt, but something else as well.
Words.
Hundreds of them have been scratched into the crumbling stone with this strip of iron. I trace the curves and the straight lines of the letters, as I did with my alphabet stencils at home. Of sound mind, one inmate wrote, never insane. In another place, I find Hungry, God Sees, and Died Alone. I scrape the iron against rock. Over and over, until each letter is formed, perfect and smooth. Wiping the sweat from my brow, I blow the dust away from my masterpiece, my call to arms.

Interview with Sara R Turnquist, A CONVENIENT RISK

If you could have one paranormal ability, what would it be?
I would love to have telekinesis! Moving objects with my mind would be soooo cool! I spend too much time breaking my concentration to get up and grab something that is across the desk or on the other side of the room. If I could just float it toward myself with my mind…what a timesaver that would be!

What is one thing your readers would be most surprised to learn about you?
That I am very funny by nature. In my writer’s critique group, we do writing prompts each meeting and mine are always funny. But I don’t write particularly humorously in my novels. There are moments here and there, sure, but overall, I wouldn’t call my writing comedic by any stretch of the imagination. But, In reality, I am rarely serious.

When writing descriptions of your hero/ine, what feature do you start with?
I always get the physical description out of the way first. I need to be able to “see” my character before I can start delving into the deeper layers and “asking” them more questions. Yes, I do talk to the people I make up…is that so wrong?

Are you a plotter or a pantser?
I am a pantser by nature, but I am becoming more and more a PLANTSER….where I do some amount of character plotting and planning on the front end, really developing and deepening the characters, then I pants the story/plot.

Did you learn anything  from writing this book? If so, what?
I did. This was the first book I wrote with only 2 point of view characters. It was challenging and freeing at the same time. There was less to keep up with, but I found it could be limiting, too.

#Excerpt: THE VESSEL by Nancy Fraser

“According to what we were told by Dr. Williams, humans are very interested in the mating process, especially for procreation.”

“Sometimes,” he conceded. “Other times it’s nothing more than a tumble between the sheets.” He depressed the accelerator even farther and reset the cruise at one ninety. He needed to get them back to the main highway as soon as possible. This conversation was headed in the wrong direction, just as they’d been during the previous day’s storm.

Much to his chagrin, Alora wasn’t quite finished with the subject. “I accessed the databanks in Dr. Williams’ office to do some research on the mating habits of humans. After Fiona died, I wanted to see for myself if it was as horrible as she’d envisioned.”

“And, what did you find?”

“A lot of technical terms. None of which made sense to me.” She paused and drew a breath. “Fornication, for instance.”

He bit his lip, fighting back a chuckle. “Yes?”

“This is the word your species has given to the act of coupling between men and women?”

“One of them. There are other names for it.”

“Oh, yes,” she agreed. “I found those in the archives as well. There was...uh...coitus and copulation.” She tapped a finger to her forehead, struggling for more euphemisms. “Sex. I found that one interesting since it’s also the word used to define the difference between male and female orientation.”

“Let it never be said there aren’t many routes to the same end when it comes to the English language.”

“And then, there were the...uh...slang terms.”

Oh boy. Liam shook his head, drew a breath for calm, and waited. In an effort to avoid Alora’s take on slang, he asked, “What do you call the mating process on Tethys?”

“Simple. It’s referred to breeding. A term, I might add, once used on Earth when referring to animals.”

“The term was also used for humans in some cases.”

Alora sank back into the seat, released a long sigh, and turned her attention to the passing scenery. A few minutes went by before she spoke again. “Hump, screw, and fuck.”

Liam burst out laughing, unable to stop the welcome release. “You’re a quick study, Alora of Delawon.”

“May I ask you something?”

His shoulders rose and fell on a deep shrug. “I suppose.”

“How many women have done the fuck with you?”

He almost choked on a second round of laughter. “A few.”

“And, did you enjoy it?”

BLURB:

Major Liam McGregor is a career soldier. Chosen by the leader of the United Republic to transport a government protectee to safety, Liam takes on a task that has cost his predecessors their very lives.

Alora of Delawon is an alien princess who holds the key to the survival of mankind. With the women of the United Republic left barren by previous chemical warfare, Alora’s ability to bear humanoid children makes her the government’s most valuable commodity.

Together, Liam and Alora make the trek from the government’s safe house back toward the current capitol, fighting off raiders, survivalists, and an unexpected attraction to one another.

Will their desires put them in danger? Or, will their being together become more important than the mission?

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Like most authors, Nancy Fraser began writing at an early age, usually on the walls and with crayons or, heaven forbid, permanent markers. Her love of writing often made her the English teacher’s pet, which, of course, resulted in a whole lot of teasing. Still, it was worth it.

Published in multiple genres, Nancy currently writes for four publishers. She has published twenty-four books in both full-length and novella format. In November 2016 Nancy celebrated twenty years as a published author and will release her 25th book in mid-2017.

When not writing (which is almost never), Nancy splits her free time between her five grandchildren. She’s also an avid traveler with Las Vegas being her favorite destination. Nancy lives in Atlantic Canada where she enjoys the relaxed pace and colorful people.

#Excerpt: PAINTBRUSH by Hannah Bucchin

Paintbrush
Hannah Bucchin
Published by: Blaze Publishing
Publication date: July 11th 2017
Genres: Romance, Young Adult

Mitchell Morrison and Josie Sedgwick have spent their whole lives at the Indian Paintbrush Community Village, a commune full of colorful characters tucked in the mountains of North Carolina, and they aren’t particularly close–at least, not anymore. Josie wishes she could spend all of her time at Paintbrush planting tomatoes, hiking the trails, or throwing giant communal birthday parties, while Mitchell can’t wait to escape the bizarre spiritual sharing and noisy community dinners. Luckily for both of them, high school graduation is just around the corner.
But when Mitchell’s mother makes a scandalous announcement that rocks the close-knit Paintbrush community, and Josie’s younger sister starts to make some dangerously bad decisions, the two find themselves leaning on each other for support – and looking at each other in a whole new light. Their childhood friendship blossoms in to something more as they deal with their insane families, but as graduation approaches, so does life in the real world, forcing Josie and Mitchell to figure out what, exactly, their relationship is – and if it can survive their very different plans for the future.

SNEAK PEEKS:
Mitchell
“Hi.” I tighten my grip on her waist, and she moves her hand from my shoulder, sliding her fingertips slowly, until they rest on the back of my neck. I close my eyes.
When I open them again, she’s staring at me, her face so close I can see the flecks of brown in her green eyes. It would be so easy to kiss her. Just a few inches. It would be the easiest thing in the world.
Josie
“We’re a mess, aren’t we?” He grins at me.
I can’t help it—I lean into him, pressing my shoulder into his, wanting to feel his warmth and his soft sweatshirt, wanting to be a part of that smile.
I shrug. “All the best people are messy.”

Author Bio:
Hannah has spent her life falling in love with beautiful places, both real and fictional. She grew up in charming Bethlehem, PA, went to college in sunny Chapel Hill, NC, spent a summer studying wildlife in Tanzania, volunteered on organic farms across New Zealand, and hiked all over Acadia National Park in Maine. When not writing, reading, or adventuring, she likes to daydream about the dog she'll adopt someday, listen to music from the sixties, and exchange ridiculous texts with her parents and siblings.
Paintbrush is her first novel.

#Excerpt: A SUITABLE AFFAIR by Erica Taylor

“Susanna we have to stop,” he breathed heavily as he tore himself away from her lips.

“Why is it you can kiss me when you’re foxed, but I can’t kiss you when I’m foxed?” she asked, watching the passion and torment raging war in his uniquely-colored eyes. “Your eyes are the color of a tempest, by the way.”

He laughed and kissed her again before setting her away from him, wiping his kiss off her lips with his thumb. “I am much better at handling myself while severely impaired.”

“I only had three glasses of champagne, Westcott,” Susanna said, slipping her hand into his evening jacket, and running her fingertips over his chest. “I’m not severely impaired.” He closed his eyes, enjoying the sensation.

“Apparently you are,” he said, pulling her hand down. “Three glasses of champagne and you’re drunk. Duly noted.”

“I’m not drunk,” Susanna said. “I’m merely . . . free.”

She gazed at him, thinking of his kisses, of his kindness and his jokes. He leaned down and kissed her again, long and drugging, enough to fill her senses.
“You are much too tempting for your own good, Susanna,” he whispered huskily against her lips.

“Then let me tempt you, Westcott,” she replied.
“Why will you not call me Ian?” he asked, softly, capturing her face in his hand, rubbing the pad of his thumb over her soft skin of her cheek. “You did so the other day.”

“When you are Westcott, you are detached from me, I have no claim on you,” she explained thickly, looking at him through her dark lashes. “When you are Ian, you are mine. And because you will not let me have you, it is too painful to call you Ian. Even though that is who you are to me.”

With a feral sounding growl he captured her mouth with his, pushing her back into the wall, completely hiding her from view. Her hands wound around him, lacing her fingers through his hair, pulling him closer, pulling him to her. His mouth was hot, and his roaming hands left a path of fire as he trailed them down her breasts and to her waist, cupping her bottom and pulling her against the hard bulge in his trousers. Moving on wanton need, she slowly lifted up and down on her toes, rubbing her body against his, the spot at the apex of her thighs burning as she pulsed against his erection. Susanna was lost, the heat of his mouth on hers, and his body so close, it drove her mad, stirring a desire deep within her she hadn’t known could exist. She was no longer in control of her actions, her hands, body and mouth moving on primal instinct as she returned his kisses, feeling freedom from the propriety that held her in check so often. True, she pushed the limits of what was acceptable, but she was fairly certain that wantonly kissing an earl who was not her husband was not socially acceptable. If someone found them…

BLURB:

Lady Susanna McCalister is young and beautiful, but her marriage prospects thus far have been rather lacking. Rather than living a life of spinsterhood, she decides a loveless marriage, to the dull and unromantic Lord Riverton, is better than none at all. One day while strolling through Hyde Park with her suitor, she is almost trampled to death by a rambunctious rider, Lord Westcott. Little does she know that this earl, who is as handsome as he is arrogant, would weasel his way into her heart. But the earl has demons of his own that threaten to complicate their secret romance, as he blames Lord Riverton for his sister's death. Can Susanna tame this tormented earl and help save herself and other women from a deadly fate?
