Interview with A.J. Renee, UNLUCKY IN LOVE

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series?
Unlucky in Love follows Izzy as she decides to get back into the dating game after a hiatus. She meets a few of the men traditionally and others via a dating app. Some of the dates are horrendous and others she shares no chemistry with. It’s a funny and sweet romance that reminds us falling in love isn’t always easy. You need someone who you click with and sometimes you find it where you least expect it.

Unlucky in Love is a standalone. As of right now, I don’t have any plans on returning to the characters.

What factors influenced your decision to self-publish your book(s)?
Control. My primary roles are as wife and mother. I can’t work under the pressure of deadlines without it affecting the final product.

What is your writing process? Do you listen to music or do you like silence?
Once a general idea has formed, I jot down notes on the characters. When I’m ready to write I bring in a mug of hot tea and sprint until I hit whatever word count goal I’ve set. Sometimes I listen to music and other times I don’t, depends on my mood.

Do you outline your story or just go where your muse takes you?
I outline a little, enough so I know the general direction of the story. Mostly I let the muse have control. I’d find it very boring if I knew all the details when I sat down. My characters surprise me every time and this drives me to continue.

Did you hire an editor to review your manuscript before publishing?
YES! Paying for an editor is a must. There are so many things I would have missed without them. You need that input.

Besides Amazon, are there any other sites where your books are for sale?
The stories not on Kindle Unlimited(St. Fleur series and Unlucky in Love) can be found at Barnes and Noble, iBooks, Kobo, and other sites under Smashwords or Draft2Digital publishing.

My short, Finding Love at the Falls, is available to read on my website, ajrenee.com.

Beauty Unmasked, Winter’s Surprise, A Deadly World: Vampires in Paris, and Billionaires Club are all enrolled in the Kindle Unlimited program.

Do you find it difficult to juggle your time between marketing your current book and writing your next book?
It is difficult to do, but I find balancing my work and family to be my biggest struggle.

What advice would you give a new author just entering into the self-publishing arena?
Be yourself, don’t skimp on an editor and a good cover, and stay out of the drama. Life is short. You have to do your best and you can’t be your best if you’re not true to yourself.

Some fun facts about you, which do you prefer – dogs or cats? Chocolate or vanilla? Coffee or Tea? Talk or Text? Day or Night?
I have one of each animal and both have their good and bad traits.

Chocolate except for when it’s ice cream and frosting. Those I prefer in vanilla.

Tea!!! I drink more than five mugs a day.

Texting usually but for some things talking is easier.

I like my nights. It’s when the house is quiet, and I can relax.

What’s next for you?
I’ve been editing like crazy, so I can get my work to the editors. After those are sent, I plan to return to a paranormal romance project I set on the back burner last year. I like doing book signings and my next one is the Authors and Dancers against Cancer on March 16th in Perrysburg Ohio. I love meeting people so I’m very excited about this one!

Lucky in Love.
That’s the name of the dating app I picked, hoping to find Mr. Better Than Average so I can hold off planning my future as a cat lady.
I’ve been distracted eyeballing a tall, dark, and handsome Latin hottie who works in the library with me. He is way out of my league, and a woman has needs if you know what I mean.
Finding a man shouldn’t be hard when all I have to do is swipe left or right. It’ll weed out the slimy men who have Bad Date written all over them.
Yeah, I’m learning quickly that I’m rather unlucky in love after all. The men I pick need warning labels, kissing lessons, and a good talking-to about manners.
Should I throw in the towel, or will this series of bad dates be exactly what I need to win Mr. Right?
