#Review: GONE WITH THE ROGUE by Amelia Grey

  3 of 5 stars

I usually adore Ms. Grey's books, but this one was just okay for me. I didn't feel the deep connection I usually do with her other characters. Julia Fairbright is the widow with a young child, the current duke's grandson. Unfortunately for Julia, the duke is tyrannical in his restrictions on what she can and cannot do. He keeps her in line with the threat of taking away her son which she had no doubt he would do if she strayed from his guidelines. She meets Garrett Stockton in the weirdest way--her bonnet is tangled in a tree and he helps cut her free. From there, Garrett is obsessed with her and seems to pop up every time she needs help. Even though Garrett is a good guy, I felt like I just being told what he was doing instead of being immersed in the story. There is a HEA, but I wished there was more to his character.

#Review: HEIRESS FOR HIRE by Madeline Hunter

4 of 5 stars

Minerva Hepplewhite is a young woman who has survived a brutal marriage and made a quiet life in London for herself, her friend Beth and Beth's son Jeremy. It's been 5 years since her husband died under mysterious circumstances, 5 years where she has changed her name and hidden her self as best she can. When a mysterious bequest from a duke she's never known is brought to her by the duke's nephew, Chase Radnor, she's afraid her past will become known once more and she may be suspected in the duke's death. Chase doesn't believe the duke's death was an accident and he's set out to find the 3 women who gain the most from his uncle's will. The fact that Minerva never met the duke is even more mysterious.

This was another well written book by Madeline Hunter and an engrossing mystery as to how the duke died. The one complaint I have is that the mystery wasn't resolved, but is continued into the next 2 books. I am not a fan of this tactic, but understand that everyone is still a suspect in the duke's death. I adored Chase. He was so honorable and treats Minerva with such respect.  I'm looking forward to reading Kevin's story in the next book.

#Review: STARBREAKER by Amanda Bouchet

  4 of 5 stars

I'm a huge fan of Ms. Bouchet and her latest book finds Captain Tess Bailey and Shade facing more danger, betrayal and a breakthrough in their feelings for each other. I have to admit the first book was so addicting I couldn't put it down. STARBREAKER is full of kick-ass action and impossible missions, but I put the book down a few times until I got to the last third of the book. That's when the intrigue, secrets and betrayals come to light. This book ends on another cliff-hanger and we'll have to wait to see if Tess and Shade can defeat the Overseerer for good and save the galaxy.

#Review: A DUKE TOO FAR by Jane Ashford

3 of 5 stars

Peter Rathbone, Duke of Compton, is flat broke due to mismanagement from a long line of dukes. As the last Compton duke, Peter does everything he can including fixing things in his mansion when he can. He is fighting a losing battle and he has lost hope that he can bring the estate back into the black. When his younger sister Delia dies in a tragic accident, Peter is now alone in the world. A group Delia's friends come to visit and Peter has to stretch his meager budget to accommodate them. Miss Ada Grandison was the one who found Delia at the bottom of a cliff and she has come to hopefully find closure and solve a mysterious puzzle Delia left. Falling in love with the duke wasn't in the plan, but can she understand that love isn't everything when there's no money to live?

I usually love Ms. Ashford's books, but this one was a struggle to get through. I didn't really feel the connection between Peter and Ada. She seems more committed to the "idea" of love than actually trying to understand Peter's reluctance to form an attachment to her. The mystery surrounding the estate's missing treasure was the saving grace for this story. The secondary characters including Ada's aunt helped carry the story.

I voluntarily read the advanced reader copy and all opinions are my own.

#Review: HOW TO CATCH AN ERRANT EARL by Amy Rose Bennett

3 of 5 stars

Gabriel Holmes-Fitzgerald, Earl of Langdale, a known rake has a bigger problem than a furious cockolded husband. His hot-tempered cousin is planning on challenging his right to the earldom based on flimsy evidence that his parents did not have a lawful marriage. Now Gabriel is on the hunt for his mother who he'd not seen for more than two decades. His search takes him to Switzerland where he runs across blue-stocking Arabella Jardine. While trying to deliver a letter to Arabella, he is caught in a violent storm and when his horse throws him not far from the villa where she is staying, Arabella is the one who sets his dislocated shoulder. Impressed with her medical skills, Gabriel kisses her and is soon caught by Arabella's strict aunt. Will he do the honorable thing and marry her?

It seems that challenging legitimacy of a title seems to be a popular trope these days. This is the third book I've read with this issue. I was hoping that there would be some witty banter between Gabriel and Arabella, but that's not the case in this book. As soon as Gabriel kisses Arabella, she becomes unable to form a coherent sentence. I also wasn't fond of Arabella and what she does to Gabriel once they marry. The constant back and forth in her resolve was annoying. I did like the mystery of trying to find Gabriel's mother, but it wasn't enough to carry the book to 4 stars.

I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy and all opinions are my own.

Blurb:
After being expelled from a young ladies' academy, a disgraced Miss Arabella Jardine is whisked away to the Continent until the controversy in London subsides. However, it doesn't take long for Arabella to shock her family all over again when an encounter in Switzerland with the irresistible rakehell-in-exile Earl of Langdale leads to a compromising situation. Despite his wicked reputation, Lord Langdale is the sort of man she has dreamed of marrying.

When Gabriel Holmes-Fitzgerald is caught in flagrante delicto with the apparently prim and proper Miss Arabella Jardine, he's obliged to offer for the young lady's hand. Unprincipled cad that he is, Gabriel is no stranger to scandal. He'll do the right thing and wed Arabella, although he secretly despairs his tainted soul will corrupt and ultimately destroy her.

When Arabella's life is unexpectedly threatened by an unscrupulous enemy from the past, one thing becomes crystal clear to Gabriel: the worst torment of all will be losing the woman he loves. And he would do anything, even sell his soul to the Devil himself, to save her.

Amy Rose Bennett has wanted to be a writer for as long as she can remember. As she is an avid reader with a particular love for historical romance, it seemed only natural to write stories in her favorite genre. She has a passion for creating emotion-packed--and sometimes a little racy--stories set in the Georgian and Regency periods. Of course, her strong-willed heroines and rakish heroes always find their happily ever after.

"As a fan of the incredible Jane Austen ... this novella was a real treat for me to read. The author does a wonderful job with descriptions, such as when she describes Emily's first ball as a kaleidoscope of colors as the couples dance the night away."

"Love by Secrets is a sweet, bite-size love story. ... I really liked the time period the book was set in. It reminded me of Pride & Prejudice in that regard."

"The story was captivating, truly well-written.....Overall, Love by Secrets was an enjoyable, quick read. The author did a good job in conveying all the right elements of a sweet historical romance and I look forward to continuing the series, as well as read her other works. I recommend giving this one a try.

#Excerpt: SEA CHILD by LaVerne Thompson

Sea Child
LaVerne Thompson
(Children of the Waves #4)
Publication date: April 23rd 2020
Genres: Adult, Fantasy, Romance

Land or sea, he was her world.
Shawnah had a decision to make. Sea born but land raised, she now knew the truth of her birth and how far some would go to steal her powers. There was only one man she trusted to protect her while she learned how to protect herself. But what happens if she decides to flaunt destiny and not remain in the sea? Would she risk losing him?
The children of Poseidon are fated to have one mate.
Cyrus didn’t think that applied to him, since he was a hybrid born of both land and sea. He never searched for a bride. But fate had other ideas, and once he held Shawnah in his arms, Cyrus had no intention of letting her go. When she is once again threatened, Cyrus is willing to take on the gods of the sea, or even her father of the land, to protect her and remain at her side.

EXCERPT:
…soon as his lips had touched Shawnah’s he knew…
She stirred in his arms and opened her stunning hazel eyes to stare into his golden ones. She smiled.
‘You’re safe now.’ Cyrus spoke into her mind.
‘I know you. How do I know you?’
He frowned. ‘I’m not sure, but at some point in our lives, our paths may have crossed. Come we must hurry.’
‘Where? I don’t remember much. Can you tell me what’s going on?’
‘Yes, but we need to get out of here. Trust me.’
His heart paused as he held out his hand and waited. It began beating again when she placed her hand in his.

Interview with Janet Elizabeth Henderson, RICH

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series?
Rich is number five in the Benson Security, romantic suspense series, but it can be read as a standalone. It’s about a woman who walked away from her family company ten years earlier, after she was attacked and blackmailed, and now she has to return to help root out a thief. Her return prompts her blackmailer to act again, but this time, Rachel isn’t a young scared woman. She’s strong and has a security firm at her back. She has no intention of running. In fact, she plans to find the person behind her attack and deal with them personally.

Do you have a favorite character?
It’s got to be the hero, Harvard. He’s this huge, calm, immovable force that Rachel has no idea how to deal with. I love that he’s a deadly, ex-CIA agent, but he has no desire to step on Rachel’s toes. Instead, he supports her as they work together to find her blackmailer. I love Harvard. I wish he were real!

Did you try the traditional route to publishing, i.e. querying agents/publishers?
I started out writing crime novels and had an agent for that, but when I switched to writing romance, we parted ways. Then I sent my first romance novel to Harlequin, who changed editor on it four times and lost it three times in two years. A friend suggested self-publishing, this was back in 2012 when ebooks were just taking off, so that’s what I did. I pulled the book from Harlequin and self-published it—and several more after that! Then, a few years ago, I decided I’d like to try traditional publishing too, so I got another agent and contracted a couple of books to Entangled, in a different genre than those I usually write. So, now I’m a hybrid writer and I love it!

How long before you got your offer of representation/your first contract? Was it for your first novel?
It took 34 queries with my crime novel to get my first agent. As for my current agent, I was at a conference and took part in an early morning cold reads session. This is where you submit a couple of pages from your manuscript to be read anonymously by someone else in front of the group before the agent or editor gives their opinion on it. Once my pages were read the agent said, “I’ll represent whoever wrote that.” At the time, I was happy just being self-published, so I turned her down. Three years later, I decided I wanted to be traditionally published as well as self-published, so I called her up and asked if she was still interested. Fortunately, she was! It then took her a year to sell my weird hybrid futuristic romance series. 😊

What factors influenced your decision to go with a particular agent or publisher?
With my first agent, I just signed with the first person who wanted me! And we weren’t a good fit. So, I learned a lot from that. Which meant that by the time I’d gotten around to signing with my current agent, I’d checked her out and had a long chat about what we could do for each other. I went into that relationship with my eyes wide open, aware that the agent works for me, not the other way around.

Are you currently under a traditional publishing contract for future books or do you have manuscripts that you will self-publish? Are you doing both?
I do both. I have a series called, Red Zone, that is set about a hundred years in the future, in what I envision the world to be then. This series is published by Entangled. It has a set of ex-army ranger heroes—from this time—who were victims of an experimental weapon and woke a century later with changed DNA. They each have an animal that they share their DNA with, but it isn’t like shifters, they don’t change into that animal. Instead, the animal lives on their skin like a tattoo and can become three dimensional and separate from them. The books tell the stories of these displaced people, trying to make it in a new world, and falling in love while they do it.

As well as that series, I’m starting a new romantic comedy series, set in Scotland, that I’ll self-publish. And, of course, there’s Benson Security six to write!

If you used a graphic designer/publisher’s designer, how involved were you during the creative process for your cover?
I design all my own covers. I studied art at college, which makes me think I’m qualified to do this, even though I know I’m not! But I enjoy it. 😊

What is your writing process? Do you listen to music or do you like silence?
I prefer silence. But, I have been known to play the same songs on an endless loop too. It becomes background noise and helps me concentrate. Harry Styles got me through writing Rich. 😊

Do you outline your story or just go where your muse takes you?
I’ve tried outlining, but it doesn’t work for me. I end up writing something different anyway, so it’s just a waste of time. Instead, I make sure I know my characters inside out before I start the book. That way when I throw them into a situation, I can guess how they’ll react and that drives the plot.

Did you hire an editor to review your manuscript before publishing?
Absolutely!! This is very important. You want to be as professional as possible when you self-publish. I have a copy-editor, a proofreader, beta readers and often an developmental editor too.

What advice would you give a new author just entering into the self-publishing arena?
Be professional!!! Don’t be in a hurry to put your book out. Make sure it’s finished to the highest standard possible before you upload it to any retail sites. The biggest mistake I see new writers make is that they aren’t ready to self-publish, and then their sales are terrible and they become discouraged. If you are brand new to this, hire a developmental editor for the first few books. You won’t regret it. They’ll help you to hone your storytelling and to get rid of the dross in your book. Then for every single book you put out, hire a copy-editor and proofreader. No one person can catch every mistake, so it’s important that your book goes past two professional sets of eyes. Don’t cut corners. Polish your work. Otherwise you aren’t doing yourself or your readers any favors.

Janet Elizabeth Henderson
(Benson Security, #5)
Publication date: April 23rd 2020
Genres: Adult, Thriller

Rachel Ford-Talbot has nothing to do with her family or their pharmaceutical business. And she likes it that way. As one of four partners who own an internationally renowned security business, Rachel prefers to leave her past, with all its secrets, deeply buried.
But when a series of thefts reveal that the family business is being targeted for industrial espionage, her father begs Rachel to investigate. His illness makes it hard for her to refuse, but Rachel wonders if he truly understands what he’s unleashing on his company. Because she isn’t the same bright-eyed graduate that walked through their doors years earlier. Now, she’s strong, powerful, and somewhat terrifying. A woman who doesn’t suffer fools lightly and who is afraid of nothing.
She also isn’t alone.
This time, she has the might and expertise of Benson Security at her back. And an ex-CIA agent at her side—because Michael “Harvard” Carter has appointed himself her bodyguard for the duration. Even though Rachel doesn’t need, or want, the annoyingly sexy man’s help. But while the world sees a first-class bitch when they look at her, Michael sees only someone who intrigues him. Buy link:

Here’s Publishers Weekly’s starred review:

In Clark’s excellent fourth thriller featuring L.A. defense attorney Samantha “Sam” Brinkman (after 2017’s Snap Judgment), Sam has found her dream man in Niko Ferrell, a funny, smart hunk who’s achieved global fame and fortune with a business empire centered on his martial arts skills. Her cynical belief that her happiness is too good to last is validated when their vacation on Bora Bora is interrupted by news that Gold Strike Enterprises, a company Niko invested in, has gone under.

While the significant financial loss is one Niko can afford, the same isn’t true for others to whom he recommended the investment, including his mother, who’s wiped out and suffers a debilitating stroke from the resultant stress. That tragedy gives Niko a powerful motive for murder. When Niko and Sam discover the dead body of one of the men who ran Gold Strike, Niko becomes the prime suspect in what turns into a homicide case. Sam’s need to believe her boyfriend’s innocence is tested when she learns secrets about his past he withheld from her.

The plot twists are both plausible and shocking in this intelligent page-turner. Fans of whodunits featuring ethical dilemmas will be pleased.

But when their experiment goes terribly wrong, Jason and Victory suddenly find themselves drawn into the inscrutable machinations of an ancient evil.

THE FIRST UNIVERSE OF ITS KIND

A century before the term "crossover" became a buzzword in popular culture, Edgar Rice Burroughs created the first expansive, fully cohesive literary universe. Coexisting in this vast cosmos was a pantheon of immortal heroes and heroines--Tarzan of the Apes, Jane Clayton, John Carter, Dejah Thoris, Carson Napier, and David Innes being only the best known among them. In Burroughs' 80-plus novels, their epic adventures transported them to the strange and exotic worlds of Barsoom, Amtor, Pellucidar, Caspak, and Va-nah, as well as the lost civilizations of Earth and even realms beyond the farthest star. Now the Edgar Rice Burroughs Universe expands in an all-new series of canonical novels written by today's talented authors!

Excerpt:

Fire and ash blackened his armored bands, but he advanced without the appearance of concern. The black smoke rippled off him as he stepped from the fiery mess. Each step of his large feet seemed to hasten the floor cracks that still moved in our direction.

“Stop!” I shouted. “This is a grand fight we have going on here, but if you advance any farther, you’ll shatter this floor and hurl us both to our deaths.” He continued forward as if he hadn’t heard me, one heavy step after another. I looked to the broad strip of white rock that encircled the room, hoping it would be sturdier than the glasslike material that composed the floor.

At that moment, the whole building seemed to shake. There came a tremendous cracking sound, and the section of the flooring upon which I stood lurched down several feet with a sickening screech. I flung myself to one side and grabbed a thick section of the clear floor, holding on with one hand as I watched the great chunk of glass upon which I had just been standing twist and turn on the way to the ground far below.

Fingers bleeding, I clutched the sharp edges in order to keep myself from following the broken section down. The sounds of combat around me fell away until I heard nothing but my own breathing, ragged and desperate, fearing the slightest breeze would cause my fragile handhold to break free.
