Interview with Paul DeBlassie, THE UNHOLY

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series?
The Unholy is a standalone supernatural thriller that delves into the dark side of religion and one woman’s struggle to break free.

Do you have a favorite character?
Claire, the heroine, struggles to come to terms with the reality of darkness cloaked in light. It affects her ability to live and love. She breaks your heart and makes you hope she makes it through tough times and heartache.

Briefly describe your journey in writing your first or latest book.
I’ve been writing for thirty years. The Unholy won the International Book Award, a culmination of ten years of clinical/psychotherapeutic experience and research, leading to bloodletting on the page—the birthing of a novel.

Are you currently under a traditional publishing contract for future books or do you have manuscripts that you will self-publish? Are you doing both?
I stick with my own imprint, Hallowed Realms Press, for my novels. I’ve been with traditional publishers, their price points way too high for the indie market. I can write, have professional edits, and do international pr for supernatural thrillers best as an indie writer.

If you used a graphic designer/publisher’s designer, how involved were you during the creative process for your cover?
I always see the image in my head then pass it on to my designer. Then my imagination gives a thumbs up to the final cover. I know if the image stirs feeling

What is your writing process? Do you listen to music or do you like silence?
I listen to the shamanic trance music of my native New Mexico, the realm of my writing and imagination.

Did you hire an editor to review your manuscript before publishing?
Oh, you bet. I have three editors – developmental, copy, final edit.

Besides Amazon, are there any other sites where your books are for sale?
Amazon is best for me. It sells 70% of indie books and ebooks. When I think of shifting away, my psyche acts up (I’m a psychologist) inner feelings get scratchy. So, I stick with Amazon.

What kinds of marketing [twitter, facebook, blog, forums] are you involved with for promoting your book(s)?
I have a wonderful social media base of appx. 90,000 across various platforms. I love the interactions with readers when it comes to blog posts, editorial reviews, and new releases.

What advice would you give a new author just entering into the self-publishing arena?
If you feel you have a story in you, write it, let nothing stop you, and go indie-stay indie.
