#Review: LOVE IS A ROGUE by Lenora Bell

  3.5 stars

Lady Beatrice Bentley and Navy carpenter Stamford Wright meet at the Duke's country seat, but it's not a pleasant experience on Beatrice's side. She finds the extremely handsome and virile Ford distracting and annoying at best, but she can't help but stare at him while she works on her pet project--a dictionary. The two find themselves in London and Ford agrees to renovate a bookstore Beatrice inherits from a distance aunt. Their mutual attraction is hard to suppress. They're from different social classes, but can love conquer all in the end?

I like reading the first book in a series because it sets up future books. I loved the knitting society and assume those ladies will each get their own books, but I felt a little lost with the backstory of Beatrice's brothers, Drew and Rafe especially Drew because throughout the book he was amongst the missing and then he just shows up. Where was he? The romance between Ford and Beatrice was a nice slow burn and loved their lively banter. Some of the plot points especially Ford's grandfather was wrapped up way too easily and was not realistic for someone who has held grudges for 30+ years. I'm looking forward to see which lady knitter is highlighted in book 2. I loved Beatrice's friends and want to learn more about them.

I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy and all opinions are my own.

Interview with Alexandrea Weis, THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series?

It is the story of a Courtney Winston, who is getting over her heartache and dumping her family at Christmas to retreat to a mountain lodge. There she plans to rewrite her novel. An accountant with a big firm, Courtney struggles with her life choices and secretly wants to write romance novels. Once hidden away at her cabin in the woods, a host of odd creatures and characters offer her little peace and a lot of advice about life and love. When she discovers the supernatural identity of the people coming and going from her hideaway, Courtney realizes she has been hiding from life and not living it. Is this a series? Could be.

Do you have a favorite character?

Courtney’s feistiness, forward-thinking, and stubborn attitude were fun to write. Probably my favorite character was Mrs. Finn; the cook sent to the cabin to care for Courtney. She’s brash, very opinionated, and ready to hand out advice to Courtney about her love life. She’s like those pesky aunts who swarm at the holidays wanting to know everything about your life and touting tons of advice on how to improve it.     Have you ever had a minor character evolve into a major one? Did that change the direction of the novel at all?

What factors influenced your decision to go with a particular agent or publisher?

How interested is that agent or publisher interested in my career is a big one. Do they see me as a one-time book for hire, or are they investing in growing with me as a writer? A career can have several different employers but finding one who believes in you and investing in your future is vital.

Are you currently under a traditional publishing contract for future books or do you have manuscripts that you will self-publish? Are you doing both?

I have more contracts with Rosewind Books for future novels. I also have several contracts and works coming in 2021 with Vesuvian Books. Then there are the contracts I have with an Italian publisher Delrai Edizioni, who has translated some of my indie books into Italian and will be releasing them through 2022.

What is your writing process? Do you listen to music or do you like silence?

I never listen to music. I find it distracting. I park in front of my computer and write. Sometimes I have an outline to go by. Others, I write what comes into my head.

Did you hire an editor to review your manuscript before publishing?

I always have my books edited and proofed. Today in the business, it is worth the investment.

Do you find it difficult to juggle your time between marketing your current book and writing your next book?

Being a writer is all about juggling. Fortunately, I have fantastic publishers who take care of a lot of marketing, but I still spend a lot of time on social media getting the word out. I split my day up with marketing and writing. The marketing does slip when I am deep in a book, which is most of the time, but there is never a day that goes by that I’m not checking social media or investigating a new way to promote my books. Having a great network of writers you trust can help. They can offer suggestions and share some marketing duties.

What advice would you give a new author just entering into the self-publishing arena?

Those first tough reviews can be hard. But take the constructive criticism and grow from it. You will develop a thick skin in this business, but you can never give up.

Besides writing, do you have any other passions?

Animals. I am a wildlife rehabber with the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries, so I am always rescuing orphaned or injured wildlife, or tending to my menagerie at home.

Some fun facts about you, which do you prefer – dogs or cats? Chocolate or vanilla? Coffee or Tea? Talk or Text? Day or Night?

I love cats and dogs. Prefer chocolate. Never drink tea or coffee. And love the night. You get so much more done when everyone is asleep.

What’s next for you?

2021 is going to be a busy year with three releases coming from Vesuvian books. The second installment in my YA thriller series St. Benedict Series, A River of Secrets, will come out in February. A new series about a private high school with a history of murder will appear next year, called Have You Seen Me. It is a YA thriller series reminiscent of I Know What You Did Last Summer. There will also be the first book in a dark, grounded sci-fi series call The Chimera Effect. Another romance book with Rosewind Books about time travel and lost love called a Locket in Time will come out in fall 2021.

#Review: THE DUKE EFFECT by Sophie Jordan

3 of 5 stars

I haven't read any of the previous books so had no introduction to Miss Nora Langley until this book. I liked her and her desire to help people. Having studied medicine at her father's side, she was still suggesting remedies and signing her father's name to inquiries 5 years after his death. Her deception comes to light when Constantine Sinclair, a career soldier and new heir to a dukedom, who has been corresponding with her father, shows up on her doorstep asking to speak to her father about a cure for the current duchess's ailment. She has to admit her deception, but Sinclair can not get past her lies. Not wanting to leave anyone in pain, Nora and her maid travel to London to see if she can help the duchess. Sinclair is not happy to see her, but agrees that maybe she can help.

I didn't care much for Sinclair and felt it took him too long to show any emotion toward Nora. I was disappointed that Nora's "tonic" storyline didn't resolve itself. An event happened and that was it. It wasn't a viable treatment for the duchess because of the side effects, but is that the end of this plot point? Anyway, I thought the ending was quite rushed. I liked the epilogue, but Sinclair is the heir to a dukedom and only having a daughter in ten years should not have satisfied him. Where was his son and heir?

I voluntarily read the advanced reader copy and all opinions are my own.

#Excerpt: SHOPPING FOR A CEO'S BABY by Julia Kent

Shopping For A CEO’s Baby

(Shopping for a Billionaire, #16)
Publication date: October 27th 2020

It’s Andrew and Amanda’s turn… in duplicate

We’re having twins.

Which means my shooters are stronger than my brother’s. I win.

Yeah, yeah, everyone can say it’s not a competition, but it is.

And we all know it.

Two babies at once means double the fun, and double the misery for my poor wife, Amanda. While I’m growing a Fortune 500 company, she’s growing two entire human beings out of nothing but orange cheese snacks and ice cream.

Do you have any idea how hard I’ve worked during this pregnancy, tracking down orange smoothies for her?

Not to mention being forced to Facetime into a childbirth class on perineal massage, rescuing Chuckles the cat from being shaved bald by my two-year-old niece, and fighting with a wife who has named the twins Lefty and Righty.

By the time we hit the ninth month, my entire world revolves around pleasing — and protecting — her.

Even if it means humiliating myself in the name of love.

Wait a minute. Wait a minute, now.

Hold on.

Is she the one who’s winning?

Andrew and Amanda are BACK in the newest New York Times bestselling Shopping series book as they “beat” Declan and Shannon in the baby competition, but at what cost? As their future awaits them in the form of twins, Amanda and Andrew face ghosts from the past with wit, humor, and most of all — plenty of love.

I look at my phone. Andrew.

I’ll be home for dinner. What do you want?

For the last few weeks, we’ve ordered takeout every single night, because I never know what my stomach will or won’t be able to handle. I close my eyes and ask myself what I want, and reply:

Grilled salmon with paprika. Cantaloupe. Sautéed carrots in honey and cumin.

He texts back: I see you’re sticking with the orange theme.

I send an emoji of someone an orange sticking out its tongue.

Will do, he replies. I’ll have Consuela make it and bring it home after the gym.

Then I get a heart.

Consuela owns a private restaurant in the Seaport District, the kind that you can’t know about unless you know someone who knows someone. It’s our special place, and since morning sickness has ravaged me, Consuela’s been gracious enough to meet my weirdo dietary needs.

She also takes it as a challenge. My palate has expanded considerably as a result of her driving mission to find new orange foods.

I reply with: You mean you’ll have Gina contact Consuela to do it all, and have Gerald pick it up and bring it to the house.

Same thing, he texts back.

“I love how you smile when you think about Andrew,” Mom says, making me look up from my phone.

“You two are so in love.”

My smile broadens. “We are.”

She looks at my belly. “Those babies are very, very fortunate.”

“Billionaire’s kids,” I mutter.

“No. You could be penniless and they’d be so, so blessed. You and Andrew are going to be wonderful parents.”

“How do you know?”

Tenderness floods her face as she reaches for me. I stand and bend before her, her hand on my shoulder, eyes shining with something close to tears.

“Because you have such a good heart. You always did. You’re smart and sweet and you care about people and want to help them. And Andrew loves you deeply. I may not un-derstand his ambition, but I do see that he’s a loving man.”

Ms Bradley is a favorite author of mine and I usually love her books, but this wasn't one of those books I loved. I almost stopped reading after only a few chapters--just didn't hold my interest. My first criticism was the title. It doesn't really apply to the book. Once I got past the first couple of chapters, the plot began to pick up.

I did love Tristan. He was so honorable and willing to listen to Sophia, at least when he got to know her a little better. The 3 stars is for the mystery running throughout the book. That was clever and interesting. While this book didn't rate high for me, I'll be interested in reading more books for this talented author.

I voluntarily read the advanced reader copy and all opinions are my own.

#Review: TALL, DUKE AND DANGEROUS by Megan Frampton

2 of 5 stars

Nash, the Duke of Malvern, doesn't talk much. He grunts his way through most conversations, gets drunk and uses his fists against any he deems need a good pounding. Lady Ana Maria has gone from maid to lady and becomes even more aware of Nash, her cousin's best friend.

One doesn't desire a best friend's sister. At least this is what Nash tells himself throughout the book along with the fear that he'll be like his abusive father and so he shuns all relationships including one with Ana Maria. Unfortunately, I found this book's plot quite ridiculous sometimes. Why was Ana Maria treated as a servant by her step-mother? She's a gently-born lady so where was her father or her brother and heir when she was growing up and why would they allow the duchess to treat Ana Maria that way. That makes no sense.

The constant internal dialogue got old very quickly and I found myself skipping paragraphs. My biggest complaint is the ending is so abrupt. There's no epilogue or even a few paragraphs to wrap things up. I also would have liked to know more about Nash's mother who makes an appearance at the end of the book for a few scenes. I probably won't be reading any more books in this series.

I voluntarily reviewed the advanced reader copy and all opinions are my own.

#Review: ONCE UPON A TIME IN BATH by Cheryl Bolen

  2 of 5 stars

I wanted to like this book, but there was too many things I did not like. First the way Lord Appleton went about securing Dot's hand. He pounced on her early on and secured her hand in just a matter of two weeks all to gain access to her dowry. Poor Dot never stood a chance. Appleton was the first man she'd met and while he was handsome, I do wish she had a little more backbone to want to meet more men before committing her life to him.

The whole issue of Mr. Wolf was a bit on the ridiculous side. Ms. Bolen paints him as evil without much of an explanation why except he was taunted and shunned while a young boy at Eaton. She also did not explain the obsession in ruining just Appleton and meeting his sister Annie. Did he hope to win her hand by blackmail?

Without going into any more details that spoil the story, I'll just say that I was quite disappointed in this book. I knew who the murderer even before the murder took place. It was all just too obvious. I do prefer the plot twists to have a bit more meat to them.

I received a copy of the advanced reader copy and all opinions are my own.

Interview with Kaylene Winter, LIMITLESS

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series?

LIMITLESS is book 2 in my Less Than Zero Rockstar Romance Series. LIMITLESS is the flip side of the coin from ENDLESS and follows the romance between Jace Deveraux, LTZ’s drummer and Alex LeRoux, travel blogger extraordinaire. I wanted to tell a story about two sexy friends whose love grows into everlasting commitment over the span of their new adult lives.

Do you have a favorite character?

Alex is inspired by my BFF from childhood. Alex is playful, fun, takes no prisoners, fair and beautiful, of course. She’s a girl’s girl, her BFF Zoey and her have a delightfully supportive relationship. She also stands up for what she believes in, especially with the sexy, drummer Jace.

Have you ever had a minor character evolve into a major one? Did that change the direction of the novel at all?

Carter, the “godfather” of LTZ is in a historical (fictional) Seattle band called Limelight. His son, Zane is LTZ’s lead guitar player. Carter’s influence – both good and bad – really helps LTZ and hurts them, his impact is felt throughout the series.

Did you try the traditional route to publishing, i.e. querying agents/publishers?

No, I did this for me. I wanted to have a creative outlet and test the waters. With the overwhelmingly positive response, I’m really enjoying the self-publishing route – of course would also potentially consider working with agents/publishers if the opportunity arises.

If you used a graphic designer/publisher’s designer, how involved were you during the creative process for your cover?

As an advertising/marketing major, I am EXTREMELY involved in all things visual. I really dug deep and researched cover designers on books I loved to find my cover designer. Then I realized what a stand-out photographer she is, so now she’s my everything.

What is your writing process? Do you listen to music or do you like silence?

I’m still running a business full-time and have a very busy philanthropic schedule. I try to write an hour a day, and spend Sundays getting my marketing and promotion together for the week.

I’m really used to distractions, so while my preference is to have quiet when I write – I can do it anywhere. Some of my best steamy scenes were written sitting on the couch while my husband was watching some show on TV like American Pickers or Deadliest Catch.

Did you hire an editor to review your manuscript before publishing?

When I first started on this journey, I wrote a few authors I admired and asked them for one piece of advice. They all universally said – get a professional editor. So I hired my editor Grace Bradley, and that was quite possibly the best decision I ever made. Working with her was amazing – I’m not someone who gets bent out of shape about this or that. Her advice, comments, recommendations – and chastising (I’m terrible about misplaced metaphors) have made me infinitely a better writer.

What kinds of marketing [twitter, facebook, blog, forums] are you involved with for promoting your book(s)?

I’m everywhere – and here are my links:

Facebook - Rocker Romance Group:

Endless Book Purchase on Amazon:

Limitless Book Purchase on Amazon - PRE-ORDER:

Do you find it difficult to juggle your time between marketing your current book and writing your next book?

YES!  Because I’m so new to all of this, I just feel like I’m right under water every minute of the day. Between learning about Amazon ads and different types of promotions, I’ve been like a newborn fawn.

Besides writing, do you have any other passions?

My husband and I love to travel all over the world, and we love to eat chef-tasting menus in fancy restaurants. We also adore our 2 year old Siberian Husky, and take trips all over Washington with him. He even has his own Instagram! (boudithehusky)

#Review: A DUKE FOR MISS TOWNSBRIDGE by Sophie Barnes

4 of 5 stars

Matthew Donovan, Duke of Brunswick, has been searching for a wife for 2 years and has set his cap at Miss Sarah Townsbridge even though he's never been introduced to her. When he shows up unexpectedly at a Townsbridge house party and with no preamble proposes to Sarah. She's shocked, but soon recovers enough to reject the duke's offer. Sarah is humiliated when all the other men at the party distance from her. She's furious at Brunswick until she learns his back story and decides that she can help him overcome a childhood trauma.

I enjoyed this story and loved Sarah. I was glad to see that Sarah stand her ground and not kowtow to the duke. She was generous and compassionate as she agrees to a plan to get to know him. I felt bad for Brunswick, but his treatment of Sarah was appalling. Through her patience and compassion, Brunswick will finally learn to open his heart to love.

I voluntarily read the advanced reader copy and all opinions are my own.

Interview with P.D. Alleva, THE ROSE

What are four things you can’t live without?
Well, I have four kids so it would be them but let’s toss them to the side for now. I do believe I’d have a lot of trouble if I wasn’t able to read, so books would be #1. Music a very close second. I couldn’t imagine not listening to music. Movies would be a third, however, if I had books I’d be able to let this one go. Air would be something I couldn’t live without. And for amusement sake, laughter. Couldn’t imagine a life where laughter was spooned out of the human psyche. Oh wait, imagination and free thought, forgot about those, so for the final list: 1. Books 2. Music 3. Imagination 4. Free thought although I’d give them all up for my babies.
What is your favorite television show?
Ozark and Ancient Aliens. I’ll admit I don’t watch a lot of television; I’m more of a movie guy. The last show I was all die hard about was True Blood, especially after the second season. A friend recommended Ozark (as friends often do, can’t tell you how many times I heard someone say, “You’ve never seen…You would love it.”) and since my wife loves Jason Bateman we gave it a try. Best show out there IMO, although I don’t watch a lot of television so my opinion doesn’t matter too much on the topic. Of course Ancient Aliens is on top of my list but that’s not really a show although it is very entertaining.
If you could be any character, from any literary work, who would you choose to be? Why?
The time traveler in H.G. Wells’ classic novel The Time Machine, one of my earliest scifi infatuations. Why? Well, because he can travel through time, something I would love to personally witness. If Marty Mcfly can do it why can’t I?
What have you got coming soon for us to look out for?
I’ve got a few books in the pipeline. My current writing in progress is titled Jigglyspot and the Zero Intellect: A Truly Offensive Grindhouse Novel. Carnivals, Cannibals, and Clowns. Oh My! Not sure if I can use the term Grindhouse though, I’ll need to check into any trademark or copyright on that word prior to publication.
Next up is Golem, a horror thriller, currently in the content editing phase of publishing. One of my favorite silent horror films is The Golem, and for those who don’t know a Golem is based on Jewish folklore and is a spirit that incarnates inside of a statue, usually clay, although I used marble in the novel. The story setting is late 1940’s to early 1950’s New York City and follows the young and naive John Ashton after he receives a promotion to be a detective in the departments missing persons unit. His first assignment is a cold case (not that cold really, just a few years) that involves the new district attorneys missing daughter. Unfortunately for John his only lead is Alena Francon, a high society New York socialite, artist, and sculptor who has been a resident at Bellevue’s’ Psychiatric facility for the last six months. Alena filed a report indicating that she knows the whereabouts of the DA’s daughter and when Ashton arrives to question her about the claim, she tells him the story of Golem, a demonic presence from the far reaches of the universe, a hellish place of damnation called Xibalba. Alena admits to incarnating Golem into a statue she sculpted from marble in late 1947, and he’s causing havoc among the social elite while infiltrating every aspect of New York’s infrastructure. He also uses orphans to help take control, sending them out to homes as the Black Eyed Kids in an effort to indoctrinate and possess those who hold power in the city.
Both Jigglyspot and Golem are part of my horror and dark fiction series of stand alone novels, Beyond the Chamber Door. Books one and two are already published, Twisted Tales of Deceit and Presenting the Marriage of Kelli Anne & Gerri Denemer respectively.

But of course we are here to discuss my new dystopian science fiction novel, and the first book in a planned series, The Rose Vol. 1.

The Rose is a dystopian science fiction thriller inspired by an obsession with conspiracy theories, ancient aliens, and alien lore. The book features a sophisticated race of alien vampires who live in middle earth and have conspired with elite human beings and grey aliens to turn the human population into easily controlled zombies in an effort to achieve planetary and interstellar domination. The story begins directly after the end of World War 3 in an underground medical complex where human beings are subjected to genetic experimentation. The plot revolves around an unsuspecting WW3 safety camp survivor, Sandy Cox, who has been thrown in the middle of a mysterious human rebellion against the aliens and elite humans. The book features concepts found in alien lore and ancient aliens, including the Akashic Record and Robert Morningstar papers, to name a few. The book can be described as The Matrix with Ancient Aliens or Star Wars in The Hunger Games. I developed a martial arts practice I refer to as The Blades for one on one fighting scenes along with multiple surprise aliens and genetically mutated humans. The book is an action adventure thriller from start to finish.

What books or authors have most influenced your own writing?
I’m going to keep this answer to books since the author part of this question comes up so often. Some of the books (and there has been a lot) that have most influenced my writing are: Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury; The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving; A Tell Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe; Frankenstein by Mary Shelley; I am legend by Richard Matheson; The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson; The Devil and Tom Walker by Washington Irving; The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand; The Damnation Game by Clive Barker; The Shining by Stephen King (a true masterpiece); Dracula by Bram Stoker; Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte; Others by James Herbert; Time and Again by Jack Finney; A Moveable Feast by Ernest Hemingway; Dark Matter and Recursion by Blake Crouch; Vicious and Vengeful by VE Schwab; The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown; and John Connolly’s Charlie Parker series, to name a few. I can go all day with this one.

A masterful, dystopian science fiction thriller of underground genetic experiments, telepathic evil greys, mysterious rebellion, conspiracy, martial arts, and Alien Vampires.

Sandy Cox believed WW3 was over. But for those Alien Vampires, War Has Just Begun.

Forty-eight hours after a World War III treaty is signed Sandy Cox awakens in an underground compound unable to move. Tied to machines she screams for help but no one answers. At least NO ONE HUMAN.

And they’ve taken her unborn child.

Enter Phil, a rebel freedom fighter who has had more than his share of Alien Vampires. Armed with THE BLADES, a sacred alien martial art, he enters the compound on a mission to find Sandy. But as he battles his way through the compound, Phil discovers Sandy has her own agenda. Finding her stolen child is all that matters.

But the vampires have their own plan and Sandy’s baby is at the heart of their diabolical plot. Joined by a crew of rogue soldiers, they must navigate the underground compound, battling genetically mutated humans, aliens and monsters.

When battling Alien Vampires, one thing is certain…Get Ready To Bleed!

Fans of The Hunger Games, George RR Martin, VE Schwab, Star Wars and Ancient Aliens will be fascinated by this high-powered, intelligent, edge of your seat dystopian sci-fi action thriller.

Alternative fiction is PD's attempt at describing what readers uncover in any one of his books, a new discovery towards mainstream storytelling. He's been writing since childhood, creating and developing stories with brash and impactful concepts that he would describe are metaphors for the shifting energies that exist in the universe. PD exists inside of his own universe, working diligently on The Rose Vol. II and exceptional horror novels. Be prepared for Golem, PD’s upcoming horror thriller.
