#SALE .99 A VISCOUNT'S HEART FOR CHRISTMAS by Debra Elizabeth

An innocent young beauty, a seasoned spy and a mystery in the north that rages out of control sending their worlds on a collision course no one could foresee.

Charles Bainbridge, Viscount Edgerton, is the regional spymaster and has no time for a wife. His work for the Home Office is a top priority for him, that is, until he meets Lady Courtney Darkin, the sister of his best friend the Duke of Wetherby. The last time he saw her, she was running wild, her pigtails flying behind her at the duke’s country estate. She wasn’t a little girl anymore and Edgerton felt like a thunder bolt had struck him when he first laid eyes on her. But he wasn’t the only one with an eye on the young beauty.

Lady Courtney Darkin is excited to come to London in preparation for her debut Season. There would be teas, musicals, dinners and balls—everything she’s been dreaming about for years. The first time she meets Lord Edgerton, however, her knees go weak. She’s smitten. No man had a right to be so beautiful—like a marble statue come to life. Can Courtney melt the tough exterior Lord Edgerton shows the world and open his heart to love?

#Review: KISS OF THE LYON by Meara Platt

4 of 5 stars

Lord Matthew Lyon is on a mission from the Crown to catch a traitor. The clues leader to the Haverfield family and he needs to get close to Simon and Danielle, children of the Earl of Haverfield. All sources point to the earl at the heart of the treasonous plot. When his task takes him to the infamous gambling hell, he has no idea he'd leave betrothed to Danielle. It was the only way that Simon can get his debt to Matthew forgiven. Danielle tells Matthew that Simon has been acting strange and Matthew finds out that Simon suspects his father as well. Can their fledgling love survive secrets and treason?

This was another enjoyable read from Ms. Platt. I enjoy her stories and this one was no different. I especially loved Matthew and his noble intentions toward Danielle. Danielle was a commendable heroine especially the way she tries to protect her brother no matter what the cost for her. Both Matthew and Danielle realized they had feelings for each other as they try to uncover the treasonous plot. Their happily ever after was sweet. My only criticism is the lack of information about why the earl's brother had such a hold over him and why the earl was such a beast of a father to Simon and Danielle. Did something trigger such horrible punishments to children? It might have better explained the earl's personality.

I voluntarily read this advanced reader copy and all opinions are my own.

#Review: THE HEIRESS GETS A DUKE by Harper St. George

4 of 5 stars

Evan Sterling, the Duke of Rothschild, inherited a bankrupt dukedom from his spendthrift father. When he finally realizes he has no choice to save the title except to marry an heiress, he's not keen on the idea until he meets heiress August Crenshaw. August has come to London with her parents and sister to experience a Season and she has no idea her parents have agreed to marry her off to Rothschild. August rejects Rothschild's proposal fearing that her hard won independence will be taken away from her. Can Rothschild convince her that he wants her and not her money?

This is the first book I've read by Harper St. George and it was thoroughly enjoyable. Miss St. George teases out details throughout the book about both August and Evan and it kept me turning the pages until the end. I loved that August was a strong independent woman and it was Rothschild who had to do the groveling in this relationship. Evan was a very likeable hero who finally realized that money doesn't solve all his problems. I'm looking forward to the next story in this series.

I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy and all opinions are my own.

#Review: THE SECRETS OF COLCHESTER HALL by Sophia Barnes

4 of 5 stars

After the untimely death of his first wife, Viscount Sterling needs to remarry and produce an heir. He invites a number of young ladies for a house party at Colchester Hall hoping to find his next wife. None of the young ladies spark any interest until he meets Lady Angelica, a young woman who is quite outspoken in her honesty. Lady Angelica has no desire to marry the viscount especially after she feels a ghostly presence in the hall. Can she reconcile what this unusual presence wants with the lord of the manor she begins to feel an attraction to?

I enjoyed this story and the paranormal aspect of the mystery of what happened to the first wife was a good twist. The story is short, but moves along at a good pace to keep the reader engaged until the last page. Ms. Barnes teases out the clues and though I had figured out who the villain was, the way events happened in the past was engaging.

I voluntarily read the advanced reader copy and all opinions are my own.

EXCERPT:

“Bjorn—”

“Can we discuss this later? We have company.”

He’d always had a sixth sense about such things. It was one of the reasons he’d been such a fierce warrior. “Where?”

“Two behind and at least one ahead.” Bjorn jerked his head to the left. “Across the street.”

She didn’t need him to point out which man he meant. Over six feet tall, he wore jeans, boots, and a leather jacket. He looked similar to the ones who’d accosted them earlier. “Do they all look alike?” she muttered. “Is it a requirement or something?”

Bjorn’s fingers tightened around hers, but he was smiling, his lips tilted up slightly, his eyes filled with laughter. He hadn’t forgotten for one second they were being stalked and hunted, but he’d always been good at living in the moment. It’s how they’d been raised, as much a part of them as their physical appearance.

Laugh when you could, cry when you needed, revel in the joys of life, fight for honor and glory, and die well.

“What can I do?” She would fight alongside her man, no matter what they faced.

“Stay close. When I tell you to run, you run.”

“Where are we going?” It bothered her that she had no idea where they were or where they were headed.

“My truck isn’t much farther. About four blocks up the road. When we get there, turn right. It’s the black one.” He rattled off some letters and numbers. “Crap, can you even read them?”

“Yes. I have some knowledge of this world. Not everything, but I understand much, including how to read the language.”

“Good. The truck will have a piece of metal on the back with those on it. Here are the keys.” He reached into his pocket and pulled them out. “Hit this button when you’re close.” He showed her which one. “That will unlock the doors. Get in, hit this other button, and wait for me. I’ll be right behind you.”

“Got it.” She gripped the keys and had her thumb near the button he’d showed her. Her heart was racing as they kept a fast steady gait. She wanted to run, but that was the wrong thing to do. Any animal would take that as a challenge, see her as prey and sprint after her. And these men were essentially animals in human flesh.

Werewolves? They were the stuff of myth and legend but, like the gods, were real. Their kind never came to Freya’s Hall. Odin was rumoured to have all sorts of beasts in Valhalla, but she’d never seen proof, as she’d been unable to leave. That had been part of her pledge to the goddess, which is what made her being here all the worse.

Her vow had been broken.

“Another one just ahead.”

“Should we detour?” She pulled her attention back to the present situation. Her immediate goal—protect her husband.

“That’s what they want. They’re trying to herd us down that street, which means there are likely more of them. We go straight. They’ll do nothing until we make the turn onto the quieter street. As soon as we do, you run. I’ll hold them off and be right behind you.”

“I won’t leave you.”

“I know.” He dropped a quick kiss on her mouth. It was over far too soon. She licked her lips, wanting to savor his taste. It was familiar yet strangely new. Maybe because of all the years they’d missed. They were both different people than they’d been when they’d wed and started a family, shaped by their experiences. But one thing hadn’t changed. He was still a hunger in her blood.

He groaned. “Stop looking at me like that, woman. Now is not the time.”

She knew he was trying to lighten her spirits. Tension radiated from his big frame. He squeezed her hand. “Get ready, Anja. It’s just there on your right.” He kept his voice low. “As soon as we reach the corner, run hard and fast, and don’t look back.”

He’s her knight in shining armor. Only she’s no damsel in distress.

After all, I’m the owner of the historic restaurant and bar that he keeps showing up at, despite criticizing nearly everything about it. Deep breath. Did I mention I’m in debt up to my eyeballs and every bank has turned me down?

Still, there’s not a snowball’s chance in hell I’d ever work with him. Or admit he fires me up in every way.

EXCERPT:

Sydney

Wyatt catches my eye. “Appetizers are good.”

Pleased that he finally said something positive about my place, I close the distance, stopping at his table. “Glad you’re enjoying them.”

He leans back in his chair. “Have you ever thought of upgrading the dinner menu?”

My temper flares, but I manage to keep a civil tone. “No. Locals love it.”

“Not saying it’s bad, just unoriginal. I mean, every meal comes with either French fries or baked potato. A new chef might bring some life to the place. Isn’t that what tonight’s fundraiser’s all about? Keeping this place open?” He taps the table. “With the right management, a better chef, this place has potential.”

I manage this place, and the chef is a family friend. I bare my teeth. “Seems you know a lot about the restaurant business.”

“Not at all. I just appreciate a good one.”

I jam my hands on my hips and glare at him. Obviously he thinks we’re a bad one! I’m so furious I can’t even speak.

He cocks his head. “Cindy, are you cross with me?”

“Who the hell do you think you are?” I snap. “Coming in here and insulting my place left and right! If you don’t like it, don’t come back.”

He arches a brow. “Since you own the place, maybe we could talk about some serious improvements. You don’t know what you don’t know, am I right?”

I bristle. “This place was my great-grandfather’s, passed down the generations, and now it’s mine.” I leave out that Drew is the one who actually inherited it and declared it a lost cause because of the debt dragging it down. I took it over rather than let him sell it. “It’s an institution in this town, and we’re doing just fine without your city snark. How dare you walk in here and spew your judgment over all of us!”

He smirks. “I don’t recall spewing.”

My heartbeat roars in my ears, anger clouding all good reason. I desperately want to smack that smirk off his face.

He gestures to his ale, which he barely touched. “I didn’t like this one. Could I get one of those local Connecticut ales you mentioned?”

I stare at his glass of ale. I want to throw it in his face and watch his shock as it drips down his beard, fancy sport coat, and dress shirt.

He chuckles. “That’s an evil look in your eye, Cindy. You’re thinking about dumping this drink on my head, aren’t you?”

How did he know? “Not at all,” I lie.

He leans close and smirks. “I dare you.”

#Review: SOMEDAY MY DUKE WILL COME by Christina Britton

5 of 5 stars

I enjoyed the first book in this series, but this one I absolutely loved. Mr. Quincy Nesbitt ran away from a cruel mother when he was only 14 years old to make his own way into the world. When he finally returns years later, he learns his three older brothers have all died and he is now the Duke of Reigate, a title he never wanted. To get away from his mother's scheming to make Quincy marry his dead brother's fiance, he and Lady Clara Ashford agree to a fake betrothal. Lady Clara suffered terribly in her youth at the hands of a rogue and she has vowed to never marry because of that experience. Unfortunately, the more time she spends in Quincy's company, the more she wishes their betrothal was real. Can they both let go of their painful pasts and find the love of their lives?

Quincy was the perfect hero and I loved him. He was so kind and good and who couldn't help but fall in love with him. He was so patient with Clara, but the more he got to know her, the more he loved her. He just had to convince her they could share a life together. Ms. Britton does a good job of teasing out Clara's youthful heartbreak--it was so touching when she finally revealed what had happened to her when she was fifteen. I adore this series and can't wait to read the next book.

#Review: RAVISH ME WITH RUBIES by Jane Feather

2 of 5 stars

I usually enjoy Jane Feather books, but this one was flat and I wanted to stop reading at the 75% mark, but I did finish it. The ending was bland at best. First nothing much happens until 3/4 of the way through the book when the women protest at the Parliament building.

I didn't like Guy at all especially since it was revealed that at 24 he was spending time with and kissing Petra who was only 14 years old. Then 10 years later they meet again and after seducing her, marries her. Petra was a wishy washy kind of heroine. When on her own she was strong and single minded, but as soon as Guy expressed his own opinion, Petra usually caved to his viewpoint. Not my favorite book and easily forgettable for me.

#Review: THE WORST DUKE IN THE WORLD by Lisa Berne

2.5 of 5 stars

Anthony Farr, the Duke of Radcliffe. suffered through a miserable marriage until the untimely death of his wife. While he should feel saddened, he just felt free. The only good thing to happen was the birth of his beloved son Wakefield. Anthony has vowed never ever to marry again. His walls begin to come down a bit when he meets Miss Jane Kent, a long-lost relative to his neighbors, the Penhallows. Jane cannot believe how her life has turned around from being dirt poor to finding out that she has a family. She is thrilled when her great grandmother welcomes her with open arms. When Jane meets their neighbor, the Duke of Radcliffe, she is taken with his unassuming ways. Little does she realize that the duke has no plans to ever marry again.

I've not read Ms. Berne's books before and I doubt I will read any more books. Her style of writing does not appeal to me. Her sentences run on and on and on and while the dialogue was lighthearted, it became quite silly after a while. I wasn't a fan of either Anthony or Jane. Anthony was quite immature in my opinion while Jane was young and had more of a connection with 8 year old Wakefield than she did with the duke. Also, there was the question of Lady Margaret, Anthony's sister, and why he put up with her shrewish behavior on a constant basis. Was there not a dower house she could have lived in? Sadly, not much happens in this book until the last couple of chapters. I did enjoy the epilogue as it wrapped up quite a few of the issues.

I voluntarily read the advanced reader copy and all opinions are my own.
