Reviewers comments:
"The story takes the reader through twists and turns worthy of epic fantasy while managing to keep the reins of tension taut and the characters true. We get to see through the eyes of evil-doers and heroes alike, and that feature brings a freshness to the plot that I enjoyed. Even minor characters became favorites..."
"The writing is superb, the descriptions detailed without going overboard. Every city, every dimly lit tavern, and every snowy mountain pass was vivid in my mind. If you love epic fantasy, this IS the series for you..."
"Witch's Curse didn't disappoint! Loaded with drama, action, and plenty of twists and turns--not to mention a villain worthy to follow in the footsteps of Mave--this book kept me glued from the first page to the last!"

Reviewer Comments:
Excellent!
"When tragedy happens it can put your life in a tailspin. That is exactly what happened to Lacey Gardner after the death of her sister. Lacey is a detective in the Fringe department which is the division of the police department that deals with things of the paranormal and the regular department doesn't want to deal with. Lacey is really good for this job with the mess of her life she is able to connect with her job on a level most couldn't. The controversy between Damon and Nic gives us a story that we are unable to put down from the first page to the very last page. I love how the authors gave the background to who and what Damon was and the history of the Silver Cross he wore and why. Thank you for such a intense and amazing story. I highly recommend if you like a paranormal romance that has you on the edge of your seat."

Another Read into the Night gem!
"I loved the action right from the beginning of the book. It definitely got me hooked, and then I met the heroine, Lacey & absolutely loved her. It's nice to see a main character who is a strong assertive female. This book has action, adventure, romance and rich, well developed characters. I will be waiting for the sequel, cause I know it's coming!
"

Phenomenal!
"I loved this book! It had an awesome mix of mystery, action, and romance. Lacey was a fierce. strong-willed, lead female and I also really enjoyed getting to know her partners. Through them, you learned a little more about her too. Her and Damon had a great energy together and you could tell from the beginning that he wasn't like the other vampires, the ones that Lacey made a living getting rid of. I can't wait to read the next in this series and everything else from these authors!!"

Exhilarating and Exciting!
"The Silver Cross was an excellent read. Not too slow at all - the pace was exhilarating and exciting. I read it in one (long) sitting. I found I just could not put it down. I needed to know what was going to happen next with Damon and Lacey - together or separately."

Interview with Kathi Haacke Moorehead, WHITE NIGHT

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series?
WHITE NIGHT is the story of one woman’s quest to learn who she really is, rather than the person she believed she was. It sounds very cliché, I know. I think we all want to see and believe ourselves as possessing certain qualities and characteristics. Sometimes our understanding is correct, sometimes, it’s not. WHITE NIGHT begins at Jo Campbell’s deathbed, and walks with her through an afterlife she wasn’t expecting, and doesn’t feel she deserves. It’s up to her to learn the lessons she needs to learn to change her circumstances. It’s hard though. Not many of us are brave enough to look that deeply inside, especially in Jo’s situation where her salvation is at risk.

Do you have a favorite character?
I do. My favorite is Soul. She is actually Jo’s soul, and she is responsible for guiding Jo through this series of lessons to be learned. She and Jo have a very non-traditional relationship, to say the least. I love Jo as well, but Soul has the sense of humor and a “take no prisoners” attitude. It was fun to write her.

Have you ever had a minor character evolve into a major one? Did that change the direction of the novel at all?
No. In fact, to be honest, when this story was conceived, there were only two characters period. All of the supporting characters are intrinsic to the story, so I have to say that while they may not be “major” characters, they are all equally important to the balance.

Did you try the traditional route to publishing, i.e. querying agents/publishers?
I did not. I published a (very poorly written) memoir last year and went the traditional route. I did everything wrong that was possible to do, including sending a mass mailing with wrong information in it. This time, as WHITE NIGHT progressed, I realized that I didn’t want to go through the time, trouble, and frustration of appealing to a group of people who aren’t like the folks I hang out with. I am not a literary snob. I am someone who wears their heart on their sleeve. I don’t really want or expect to appeal to someone who edits The New Yorker. So no. I focused on professional editing and marketing.

What is your writing process? Do you listen to music or do you like silence?
It depends. In WHITE NIGHT, the song “Johnny Angel” is a theme that runs through the book. I can’t tell you how many times I had that cranking on certain chapters. Since this is the only fiction work I’ve done, I have no idea if a song du “novel” will become part of the process. I find that I hate interruptions (which … well … my husband can tell you about), so I have to say that my process is very solitary and quiet.

Do you outline your story or just go where your muse takes you?
I probably have made every single freshman novelist mistake with this book! I just thought of a point I wanted to make, and wrote a story about it. I would do a chapter or two a day. I know how I wanted to start it and finish it. The middle .. meh. I wasn’t so concerned with. Can you imagine? I am laughing as I say this. So I’m a “muser”, not an “outliner.” No. Let me qualify that. I was a “muser” for WHITE NIGHT. I have absolutely no idea what lies ahead. It kind of scares me!

Did you hire an editor to review your manuscript before publishing?
Ohhhh yes. If there is one place that I’d advise beginning authors to put their money, it is in editing. WHITE NIGHT is told in the first person. The odd thing about my book is that it is basically one person speaking to another aspect of herself, so it was a real challenge to present dialogue in a believable way. Plus. I am the “ellipse queen”. I had a terrific editor. She went all the way through the creation of the book with me. Then, she suggested that it go to another copyeditor because she was too close to it. Which I did. I still, even with it published, cringe when I see a missing comma or a run on sentence. But what I see published is so much better than what I could have done on my own.

What advice would you give a new author just entering into the self-publishing arena?
Believe in yourself, because if you don’t, no one else will. Trust me. Be confident, but humble. And more than anything, don’t lose your sense of humor!

Besides writing, do you have any other passions?
Laughing. Loudly. Enough to embarrass my children.

What’s next for you?
I am working on a chapter to contribute to an anthology on women conquering obstacles. I am also slated to co-author a book on spiritual learning. I am also sort of considering a sequel to WHITE NIGHT. I’m honestly not sure I want to take it further, although there are certainly ways to do so.

Interview with Martin Roy Hill, EDEN (A Sci-Fi Novella)

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series?
My latest book is called Eden: A Sci-Fi Novella. Being science fiction, it's something of a departure for me. All of my other books – Duty, The Killing Depths, and Empty Places – are in the mystery, suspense, and thriller genres. But I love science fiction, and in the last year or two, I’ve published a couple short stories in that genre.

Eden involves a group of American soldiers in Iraq who are sent out to investigate a set of ancient ruins uncovered by a large sandstorm. As they approach the ruins, they are attacked by insurgents and take refuge behind the ancient walls. There they become trapped not only by the insurgents but also by another even larger sandstorm. When the detonation of an enemy mortar opens a hole leading to a buried chamber, the GIs take shelter inside. Inside the chamber, they discover a long buried secret about the origins of Mankind that threatens to destroy civilization as we know it.

The book gets its name from the fact that Iraq is believed to be the location of the Biblical Eden.

Did you try the traditional route to publishing, i.e. querying agents/publishers?
Yes, with the first book I wrote. That was my book Empty Places, even though I ended up publishing The Killing Depths first. I actually signed with two different literary agencies. After a year with the first one, I found out the agent hadn't been trying to sell my manuscript at all because – as she explained – she was working on her own novel. The second agency simply went out of business before it could find a publisher for my book. Not happy experiences, either one of them.

What factors influenced your decision to self-publish your book(s)?
The two experiences I just mentioned had a great deal to do with it. I had to take a nearly ten year hiatus from writing. Just before the Iraq war started I switched careers, leaving behind a 20-some year career in journalism to become a research analyst for the U.S. Navy. With the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, our op tempo was very high and I just didn't have time to write. As the Iraq conflict began to wind down, I started to write again, first articles for magazines and web sites, then short stories. Then I learned about independent publishing and I was intrigued. It seemed to me to be the logical progression of the arts. Back in the 1970s or 1980s, movie producers and directors started making independent films. Songwriters and bands started putting out independently produced records and CDs not long afterward. Authors are just the latest artists to strike out on their own.

If you used a graphic designer/publisher’s designer, how involved were you during the creative process for your cover?
So far, I've designed all of my own covers. As a journalist, I learned a great deal about graphic design and I enjoy doing my own covers. But I can see sometime in the future contracting that design work out.

What is your writing process? Do you listen to music or do you like silence?
Between my day job, family commitments, and military reserve unit commitments, I don't have a lot of free time. I write anywhere I can find a few minutes to write. I carry a Kindle Fire tablet and Bluetooth keyboard everywhere I go and when I get some time, I pull them out. I also use an app on my iPhone that allows me to work on my writing anywhere I am. Having worked in busy newspaper newsrooms, I'm used to writing with a lot of noise. But I can't listen to music as I write. I get too much into the music. I'm likely to start singing or dancing rather than write.

Do you outline your story or just go where your muse takes you?
I do a great deal of outlining and plotting. It gives me confidence that there's actually a story to tell. But when I actually start writing a book, the characters and the plot seem to take on a life of their own. I always say it's like planning a road trip. You look at the road map and decide where you're going and which roads to take to get there. But when you're actually driving, you start taking little detours because some road sign caught your interest.

Did you hire an editor to review your manuscript before publishing?
I'm lucky to be married to the best editor I know. My wife, Winke, grew up in the publishing business. Her father, Robert Wade, was a well-known mystery author who wrote some thirty or forty novels under pen names like Wade Miller and Whit Masterson. Her step-father, Ed Self, was a well-known magazine publisher who created the city magazine genre. So she has more than twenty years of editing experience – as well as being a voracious reader – which she brings to the table. If I didn’t have her then, yes, I would definitely hire a professional editor.

What kinds of marketing [twitter, facebook, blog, forums] are you involved with for promoting your book(s)?
I utilize all the social media platforms – Twitter, Facebook, Goodreads, LinkedIn – and I have a web site with a blog. I find Twitter very useful. According to my analytics, I get a lot of click-throughs to my buy sites from Twitter. I also will occasionally buy advertising on a web site, and I have pay-per-click campaigns running on Goodreads and Google.

Some fun facts about you, which do you prefer – dogs or cats? Chocolate or vanilla? Coffee or Tea? Talk or Text? Day or Night?
I love all animals, but I have a special affinity for cats. I've had cats nearly my entire life. My current BFFFs (best furry friends forever) are twin orange tabby boys named Harry Potter Maximillan and Alexander Theodore. The names are bigger than the cats! As for the others—chocolate, coffee, and text. And I am definitely an early morning person, which is very strange because my wife and son are both very much night people.

What’s next for you?
I'm currently writing military mystery thriller featuring NCIS Special Agent Linus Schag, from The Killing Depths. The sequel is called The Butcher's Bill and involves a NCIS agent and close friend of Schag's who goes rogue. I’m also researching and plotting another military mystery thriller tentatively titled Polar Melt, which features a U.S. Coast Guard team investigating the disappearance of research ship in the Arctic Ocean.

#Review & Excerpt: FORGOTTON NO MORE by Christina McKnight

3 of 5 stars

I was anxious to read "Forgotten No More." I love historical fiction and this book sounded interesting. Although it started out well, I felt the book dragged on and on with Ruby's search for her biological father. There were far too many instances of her musing over the same thing throughout the book. That got a bit tiresome and then, there was the means she used to investigate whether or not a gentlemen of the ton was actually her father. I had to suspend my belief on her escapades especially during one notorious outing that was most unlikely to happen.

I did like the hero, Harold Jakeston. The author does a good job of fleshing out his character quite well. By far the most interesting character for me though was Ellington. She was a spit fire of a girl and as we learned the truth of her upbringing, it became clear why she acted the way she did. If Ms. McKnight writes Ellington's story, I would be most interested in reading that one.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

Excerpt:

London, England
January 1816

Ruby took a deep breath before trying the final drawer that could hold all the answers to her past, her true heritage. Her lungs expanded; she held the air inside. She didn’t exhale until it burned. With trembling fingers, she reached for the last drawer and pulled.

Her nicely trimmed nails nearly snapped when her grasp on the handle slipped from the force of her tug. The drawer hadn’t budged.

            Locked!

“Oh, poppy cocks!” she hissed. Moving her hands to the folds of her evening gown, Ruby procured a small pouch tucked neatly into a hidden pocket. Setting it on the desk, she pulled out her array of lock-picking devices, really only hairpins and small wires she’d collected since her first night—and her first failed attempt at breaking into a desk—to help her disengage the drawer.

She had to know what secrets this lord held. Would she find an envelope inside labelled ‘Abandoned Daughter,’ or a report from the Bow Street Runners with details about herself—her hair color, the particular green shade of her eyes, places she’d been, perhaps the details of her activities over the course of her life?

Nothing worth finding was that simply ascertained.

No man, married or not, would leave record of their nefarious past. It was more likely her father had not spared her, or her mother, a second thought after throwing his pregnant mistress from his townhouse in the middle of the night with no coat and no means to get home.

Ruby was anything but a fool, but she found herself continuing to search regardless. She didn’t need a signed confession—she just needed that letter opener.

Picks in hand, she knelt before the locked drawer and eyed the keyhole, blowing a wayward strand of hair that had fallen across her face. She’d been unsuccessful more often than not when attempting to open locked drawers. But luck may have been on her side this evening. She’d entered the ball with little fuss, shortly after the host and hostess had quit the receiving line. It was surprising how similar the layout of most London townhouses were. Ruby had navigated the halls of the second floor and found the room she sought fairly quickly, encountering not a soul.

The pins slipped into the lock and her tongue darted out of her mouth to lick her lips as she concentrated on moving them exactly right to click the lock over. She fought to keep her hands steady when sweat broke out across her forehead. She was running out of time.

Ruby applied a bit too much pressure and the pin snapped, falling uselessly into the locked drawer. “Damn you to hell, mother!” she cursed and sat back, wiping her slick brow.

She’d always viewed herself as a sensible girl, a dutiful daughter, and an honest friend. She could only imagine the horror on Vi’s face if she saw her now. A common thief. A midnight prowler. A defiler of privacy.

Although, it could not be helped.

She sought answers and at the moment all she had was an endless list of questions.
Gaining her feet once more, she bundled her kit and slipped it back into her pocket. She turned her attention to the long table against the wall behind the desk. Leaning over, she ran her hand along the underside of the ornately carved piece, feeling for hidden compartments or—if her luck returned—a forgotten folder of papers.

“Sherry, Miss Ruby?” an oddly familiar voice asked behind her.

Interview with C. Lee McKenzie, DOUBLE NEGATIVE

Did you have a best friend in high school? If you did, are you still in touch in any way? How involved are you in each otherslives now?
I moved around so much when I was growing up that I had a lot of "best friends" in a lot of places. I do still keep in touch with one I knew in southern California, and I think that's because she's very outdoorsy. We both like hiking and river rafting, so once in a while we meet and do some of that together. The others are long gone from my address book.

If applicable tell us about a time when a best friend betrayed you.  How old were you? Did you ever make up?  How did you handle it?
I guess I'm lucky. I've never had a friend betray me. Well, unless I count the time one of them started dating my ex-steady right after the break up. But I guess I didn't care enough about the guy to get upset. It was more that their dating made for some awkward moments at dances or parties.

If you never had a betrayal or fight, what is something your best friend did for you, that probably no other person would ever do.
I remember that my outdoorsy friend gave me a kitten after my cat was hit by a car. I thought that was very sweet. No one else did that for me.

What did you love most about you teenage best friend?
Her homemade fudge! Really. She and her mom made this awesome fudge, so I was sure to show up whenever I knew they were stirring chocolate and sugar and nuts together. And I loved my friend’s generosity. She gave me as much fudge as my stomach could hold.

What drove you most crazy about your teenage best friend?
She had gorgeous hair, the kind models have in magazines. Mine, not so much. I never saw her without perfect long, waves swept back from her face. I took to wearing baseball caps a lot that year.

What did you learn from your best teen friend?
Relationships take work. She was the one who did a lot of planning and calling for me to do things. She was even the one who contacted me later, long after we were out of high school. If she hadn't, we might not have reconnected.

#Excerpt: THE EYES OF VENGEANCE by Teri Riggs

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. The author will award a $25 Amazon/BN GC to one randomly drawn winner via Rafflecopter. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Someone is methodically killing past members of The Consortium, a defunct group of ruthless businessmen who made their fortunes buying and selling prime Las Vegas real estate during the era that saw the beginnings of the mega casino and luxury hotels. Homicide Detective, Kennedy O’Brien, and her temporary partner, Reno Homicide Detective Hunt, race to stop a deranged predator who claims a new victim every forty-eight hours. The killer drugs his victims, slashes their wrists, and leaves a playing card with the body. As the clock continues to tick, the search for clues seems easy—too easy Kennedy suspects.

While chasing the killer, Kennedy must also try to control hotheaded Detective Hunt, who is hell-bent on finding out who killed the first victim—his best friend’s father. At the same time, she has to deal with a jealous Nick Campenelli, whom she may or may not be in a relationship with. Nick is unhappy with Kennedy spending so much time in close contact with the very smitten, Detective Hunt. Tossed into the mix are her retired cop grandfather, her self-appointed personal domestic slave, Elvis, and a boss who is demanding answers.

Is it any wonder that Kennedy doesn’t do relationships?

Enjoy an excerpt:

Kennedy, still half asleep, drew her gun, but wasn’t fast enough to take aim. A large, firm hand clamped over her wrist. “I wouldn’t do that, Detective O’Brien. Keep your hands still and drop the gun. You don’t need the weapon.”

Kennedy slowly released her Sig Sauer and laid her hands flat on her desk. She glanced around the detective’s bull pen. Nothing but empty desks.

“What now, ass-wipe? You think you can pull this crap in the middle of a goddamn police department?”

“I don’t see a lot of cops coming to your rescue. Do you?”

Kennedy sat up straight, stretched, and looked around. The place was deserted—really deserted. “Shit.”

“Been sleeping a while, have you? You’ve got some drool on the side of your face. I think there’s a paper clip stuck to your chin.” He plucked off the paper clip and held out his hanky. “Here.”

She slapped his hand away. “That’s none of your fucking business.”

“You have quite a potty mouth, don’t you, Detective?”

Kennedy gave a low growl. “Go to hell!”

“She’s friendly, too.”

“Who the hell are you and what the fuck-all are you doing here?”

He let go of her hand and gave her the Sig back. “Detective Lieutenant Kyle Hunt, Reno PD, at your service.” He cocked an eyebrow and took a bow.

“Oh.”
