#New Fantasy Release: KING'S LAST WORD, Book 3

An evil genius, a centuries-old betrayal, and a secret dating back to Merlin the Magician.

The crystal trade of Otharia is integral to the very fabric of society, but it’s shrouded in mystery. A mystery going back to the times of King Arthur, Merlin the Magician, and the forbidden planet of Earth.

Janus Vogdo was the Grand Duke in the Kingdom of Otharia and held a monopolistic control of the crystal trade, but his preeminent power was built on a house of cards. When his nefarious criminality came to light, his devastating fall from grace had dire consequences for the entire kingdom. Imprisoned, disgraced, and shunned, it seemed the once great statesman was finished, but like any master manipulator, Janus had a plan. Escaping from prison, he gathers a sect of loyalists who call themselves the Red Alliance to incite war across the kingdom and ultimately crown him king.

Called upon by King Lucas to rise up and champion the cause of righteousness, the noble twins, Darius and Dyla Telkur, along with Eclair Jortac, set out to thwart the secret machinations of Janus Vogdo and the Red Alliance. One journey leads to Earth, and to their ancestors—descendants of Merlin the Magician—who offer to help secure the weapons for the fight on Otharia.

Time is running out. The Red Alliance has begun its campaign of conquest that might well spell the doom of King Lucas and his loyal followers. Can the loyalists find the help they seek to overcome the Red Alliance, or will the Kingdom of Otharia fall into an evil despot’s hands?

FANTASY: Reign of Magic & Steel by Debra L Martin & David W Small

THERE'S ALWAYS BEEN TROUBLE BETWEEN MAGIC AND STEEL…

Corporal Dillon Gaire, an elite scout for the Riversteel Army, excelled at army life with one slight problem. He has magic, and magic is outlawed in the Southern Kingdom. It was an ongoing tightrope balancing his military duties while hiding his magical abilities. The irony is not lost on Dillion, as he had used his secret abilities to help him gain his position as Lead Scout.

When his company is dispatched to deal with raiders on the Kingdom’s northern border, Dillon uses his ability to sense movement in the ground to discover the thieves. A clever plan was developed to trap the marauders, but during an intense battle, a powerful Northern Mage leading the raiders captured the company’s commander and used him as a hostage to escape.

Now, Dillon must use all of his skills as a tracker and mage to run down the Northern Mage and rescue the commander. Between raging river rapids trying to drown him, to the painted savages trying to kill him, Dillon runs into every conceivable problem possible, but never wavers in his quest to rescue his captain.

But will his skills be enough?

For fans of epic fantasy and daring adventures, "Reign of Magic and Steel" is a thrilling tale of magic, loyalty, and sacrifice. If you enjoyed books by authors Scott Lynch and Brandon Sanderson, then you won't want to miss this action-packed read.

#Review: A KISS OF EMBERS by Sydney Winward

4 of 5 stars

Seraphina Nova, the Ember Fae Queen, has one thing on her mind, and she'll do anything to accomplish her goal, including killing. Her younger sister Pri has been captured by the rival Forest Fae clan when she sought the healing waters of the Glades, and Seraphine will do anything to rescue her, even if she has to burn the forest down. Unfortunately, the Forest Fae are a formidable enemy with the skill to protect their surrounding forest and clan, and it's hard to penetrate even for Seraphina. She's out of options until an opportunity allows her to capture the Forest Fae heir. She'll exchange him for her sister. Simple, right?

I haven't read any of the previous books in the series, so I was a little lost at the beginning. However, the world-building in the story is fantastic, as the author's imagination seemingly has no bounds to keep the reader engaged. I really enjoyed the different aspects of magic each of the clans wielded.

When Seraphina captures Bastian, the first thing she does is stab him. Yikes! That certainly got my attention and demonstrated to Bastian's fellow guardsman, Ashryn, that she was serious in her threats to kill him. "Bring my sister to the cliffs, or he dies," was the last thing Ashryn heard as darkness overtook her from a sleeping dart. Ashryn and Bastian have a long and complicated history--certainly best friends now, but a hint of romance in the past. Ashryn is the only one in Attleglade who befriends Bastian, and she'll do anything to save him. Seraphina is counting on that.

The pages fly by as one obstacle after another is thrown into the path of Seraphina and Bastian. Along the way, they became more than enemies. Their blossoming feelings seemed a bit rushed, although they're willing to throw caution to the wind to be together. Of course, their growing romance is doomed, as each respective clan would never accept a relationship between an Ember Fae and a Forest Fae.

The climax was phenomenal, and I should have seen it coming, but I was so engrossed in the story that it caught me by surprise. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough to see what would happen. There was only one small aspect involving Bastian's father's health that was left unresolved when there seemed to be a solution nearby that I found lacking in this otherwise very enjoyable fantasy romance.

I voluntarily read this book provided by N.N. Light Book Heaven and all opinions are my own.

#Review: THE CLAIMING by J.A. Nielsen

 5 of 5 stars

I don't read a lot of YA fantasy books, but I was intrigued when I read the blurb for THE CLAIMING. Spence is the illegitimate son of King Ferrous, who has a modicum of magic that his father encourages him to pursue. Spence tries, but more often than not, his spells go awry, and he is very hard on himself as he repeatedly disappoints his father. His older brother and heir to the Kingdom, is the exact opposite of Spence--a strong battle-hardened Knight of the Kingdom, highlights how insignificant Spence feels most of the time. Dirk taunts Spence relentlessly because of his ineptitude, and Spence does his best to stay out of his brother's sight.

Everything is about to change for Spence when King Ferrous commands him to go and spell a bridge against enemy incursions, something that should be within Spence's abilities. Finally, he can do something right for the Kingdom or so he thinks. However, with any use of magic, something goes wrong, and instead of spelling the bridge, Spence's spell captures and binds a beautiful Fae princess to him. The binding or claiming is against all the rules of magic, and Spence is horrified at his mistake. Princess Dew Drop or Dewy is shocked and dismayed at what the human has done, but that is not the end of her troubles. She soon learns what truly terrifying means when she's banished from the fairy Summer Court. No fairy bonded to a human is welcome in the Fae kingdom.

Spence searches through all his spell books, looking for a way to undo the Claiming, but can find nothing. His delightfully flawed character tries so hard to always do the right thing but is forever making mistakes.  Even his magic had apparently turned against him. It's hard not to route for him because he's so sincere in everything he tries.

The author does a fantastic job describing Fae customs and the Summer Court. I could easily envision the towering trees offering a canopy to the fairy realms as the true wonder of how the trees bend and form shapes to accommodate their fairy brethren is revealed on page after page. Dewy is a creature full of sunshine and light, dispensing much-needed water drops to thirsty plants and flowers, but she must endure more than just the pain of her banishment when she must accompany Spence back to the human castle surrounded by iron and steel. It hurts her soul, and Spence vows to do everything within his power to undo his mistake. Can Spence finally learn the proper spell to release Dewy from their bonding?

The author rounds out the cast well with another young woman, Flora, who is from the surrounding countryside outside the castle. Flora has no magic to help Dirk fight the invaders, but she has true aim with her bow and knows the surrounding countryside well. While the fighting rages, Spence and Dewy are commanded by King Ferrous to return to the Summer Court and ask for assistance fighting off the invaders, especially since not all the invaders are human. With the final addition of the Winter Fae, I could hardly read the pages fast enough to find out why the Winter King would attack King Ferrous's kingdom especially when there had been years of peace between them. The clues are sprinkled throughout the story, and I guessed that something mentioned early on in the book held significance. I assume this is the premise for book 2 in the series. Without even a pre-order page up for the next book, however, readers may be disappointed that they can not immediately continue reading about Spence and Dewy and their next quest.

#Review: LONG LOST by Rochelle L Wilcox

4 of 5 stars

This story starts with a bang, with Franco being attacked on the streets of LA by his brother Luke. Their fight escalates, and it's soon apparent these two are not humans as they fly up in the air, trying to get the best of each other. Unfortunately, a young human woman, Lia, witnesses their fight--something that should never happen and can not be tolerated. Franco gets the upper hand with Luke, and his brother races off, but now Franco is left with a problem. He must wipe Lia's memory, and she has no intention of letting him near her, so he does the only thing he can and kidnaps her and races to his sister's home in Texas.

There are lots of cat-and-mouse chases and fight scenes, and along the way, Franco finally reveals to Lia who he actually is. Of course, Lia doesn't believe he's the Norse god, Freyr. Unfortunately, this revelation doesn't happen until about the 30% mark on my Kindle. I could have easily skipped all the in-between fight scenes with Luke, aka Loki and Thor, and just started with Freyr's sister, who happens to be the Norse goddess of love, Freyrj, because Loki and Thor find them anyway. Most of the narrative is driven by Freyr and what he thinks and feels, and I would have liked to see more of Lia's thoughts and not just when Freyr asks her a question.

Freyrj's husband, Will, is a nice addition to the cast of characters. His love for Freyrj shines through everything he says and does, and I think his presence helps Lia come to grips with the situation she finds herself in. She can't return to LA with her intact memories, and even if Freyr wipes her memories of what she saw that day, there's no guarantee that Loki, Thor, or another member of the family won't kill her anyway to protect their identities.

The author does a good job of teasing out why the family wants Freyr dead, and the journey to Asgard is fraught with danger from mythical creatures. Who doesn't love dragons and giants? The group finds themselves in peril time after time as they travel through the Earth on their way to Asgard, and I enjoyed Ms. Wilcox's vivid imagination. She has clearly done her research into Norse mythology, especially when the group reaches Asgard and Odinn. Of course, the feud Loki and Thor have against Freyr turns into a battle to the death to win Lia's freedom. Will Freyr prevail one last time against the thunder god, Thor?

While the author does wrap up one of the major plot points in the story, I'm not a fan of cliffhangers, especially ones that carry through to the other books. With three additional books in the series, it doesn't look like there is a final resolution of Freyr and Lia's love until the final book. If you love Norse mythology, this series will certainly entertain you as Ms. Wilcox brings all those myths and legends to life.

Reviewers Comments:

Stone’s Curse is an epic fantasy I couldn’t put down. From the very first page until I reached the end, I was caught up in the story. I connected with the characters, especially Jeda and his twin daughters. I also connected with the desert warriors. The world-building is second to none and truly makes Stone’s Curse an exceptional read. The authors work very hard to create this world and yet, it comes across effortlessly while reading. Even though this is pure fantasy, it felt totally believable. The descriptive narration also makes Stone’s Curse an unputdownable read. Every nuance, every detail, every magical element is poignantly described. These authors are a brother-sister writing duo who are experts in writing unforgettable fantasy books. If you consider yourself a fantasy reader, you need to read this book. Highly recommend!

Much less frenetic pace than previous, good solid writing, entertaining and enjoyable.

Excerpt:

Jeda grabbed his wife’s hand and led her through the rapidly diminishing crowds in the market's east end where the screams had come from.

“We’ll find her,” Jeda answered over his shoulder, “keep up.”

Jeda dodged a merchant and nearly collided with Franc, one of the other security escorts for today's outing. Franc's distraught face told Jeda everything he needed to know. The three young girls under his protection were not with him. Jeda figured the girls had given Franc the slip to find a little excitement and adventure in the exotic desert city. Unfortunately, it sounded like they found way more than they had bargained for.

“I don’t know what happened—” Franc began.

“Not now,” Jeda called as he raced past. “The girls are in trouble, and we need to find them.”

Jeda raced along and soon found himself at the east end of the marketplace. A narrow backstreet ran off to the side, and he heard sounds of scuffling and fighting. He rushed down the alleyway, motioning for Franc and Keisha to follow. The horrific scene they came upon stopped them short.

One girl was lying against a wall with a blade sticking out of her stomach. Blood leaked through her fingers as she tried to hold the knife in place. She was pale, breathing heavily, and running out of time. Another girl had a nasty gash on her head and was held between two men while a third large guard was wiping blood from his face. The men all wore the uniform of the Palace Guard, and Jeda knew they were in a world of trouble. The gypsies traveling into the city had been warned repeatedly by Jeda and Franc not to trifle with those guards.

“You’ll all die for this,” the bloody guard said.

Jeda recognized the brute as the same one from the gypsy camp the other night. He shook his head at the irony of the situation.

Of the guards in this city, why do I keep meeting this one?

“Amir,” Jeda called out. “Still trying to get your way with little girls? Can’t get a woman to look your way? Maybe you don’t have the right bigness to satisfy a grown woman.”

Amir whipped his head around at the insult. “You,” he replied, recognizing Jeda from the gypsy camp. He spat a wad of blood on the ground and snarled at Jeda. “You may have won our last meeting, but I was drunk and didn’t have my sword.”

Amir drew an enormous scimitar and began twirling the blade around like he knew how to use it. “This time, there will be a decidedly different outcome. Come little man, and let's see how you fare against an opponent who knows how to fight and kill.”

While Jeda taunted the giant, Keisha ran to the bleeding girl on the ground. She immediately drew the blade out and put her hands on the open wound, sending healing magic into the girl. The gushing blood soon became a trickle and then stopped altogether. The young girl moaned and leaned into Keisha's arms. She wasn't bleeding, but she was extremely pale from blood loss.

The other two guards let go of the second girl and drew their swords. Franc drew his sword and met the two men head-on. The guards were well trained, but Franc was an expert swordsman, and the two men never had a chance. They were both dead in short order.

Jeda, on the other hand, stood his ground while Amir swung his sword around, trying to intimate him. Jeda smiled and shook his head.

“If that’s meant to scare me, then you’ve failed miserably,” Jeda said, staring at him with cold dead eyes. “Unfortunately for you, this will end very differently from the last time. You could still walk after our last meeting, but things will be quite different this time.”

To anyone that knew Jeda, the rage growing in his eyes would give them pause. He tried to keep his seething anger reined in, but when he saw what these men had done to these innocent girls that anger would not, could not be constrained. Jeda had been training for many long months with his sword, but that traditional training left him as his assassin persona surfaced. The transformation gave the giant a moment’s pause but did not stop him.

It should have.

"You're right about that," Amir bellowed, rushing forward with his blade held high. Then, with a speed that belayed that man's size, he swung down on Jeda, and it would have cut him right down his middle if it had connected.

It didn’t.

Much to the amazement of the big man, Jeda had easily sidestepped and waited patiently for the man to recover. Off to the side, Franc watched, wondering what Jeda was up to. He was prepared to assist but knew Jeda well enough to stay out of his way.

Amir swung around and guarded against the expected attack he thought sure would come. The big man smiled back at him when he saw Jeda standing, waiting, with no weapon in his hand.

“So you are like the jackrabbit then,” Amir mocked. “Jumping around until you can run away. Come now, let’s finish this farce. Die like a true man, not a coward.”

Jeda shook his head again and finally drew his knives, not his sword. That gave the big man pause as he wondered what the little man would do with his prick sticks.

“I was considering letting you live,” Jeda replied. "But I've known too many men like you. You'll return to your palace hole, nurse your wounds, and try something like this again. I can not let that happen."

Before Amir could reply, Jeda ran forward, dropped, and skidded on his knees, sliding through the giant's legs. As Amir looked down, shocked, he saw the twin cuts on the inside of the legs and his blood pumping out. With a roar, Amir turned and swung his sword down to where his opponent should be.

But he wasn’t.

Jeda had slid well out of the way of Amir's blade and stood with his two bloodied blades, ready to face him again. Amir stumbled a step forward, and Jeda saw the moment the guard realized he might be in deep trouble. The guard was facing a cold-blooded killer with a crazed look in his eyes. Amir looked around for an escape. He spotted Keisha and raised his sword to launch it at her. Jeda saw everything in slow motion and immediately threw one of his knives. It penetrated the big man's eye to the hilt, killing him instantly. He dropped to the ground with a look of horror on his face.

“I told you this would end differently,” Jeda said, pulling his knife from the man’s eye and wiping the gore off on the dead man’s tunic.”

Jeda turned to see the shocked look on Franc’s face. No matter how well they knew each other, he had never shown that side to Franc before.

“Remind me never to get on your bad side,” Franc said, staring at the downed giant.

Review: TITANIAN'S PHOENIX by Victoria Saccenti

4 of 5 stars

I was first drawn to this book by the cover. It was striking. Ms. Saccenti weaves an intriguing urban fantasy with all the romance and action you could ask for. I loved Maya. She was a tough New York girl who is thrown into a world of magic when she is kidnapped. When she stumbles into a seedy bar for help, she finds herself drawn to Soren. Little does she know that Soren is her eternal mate. Can she reconcile her ordinary life with one of magic and romance with Soren?

Ms. Saccenti is a new author for me and I'm so glad that I read this book. She weaves a magical world seamlessly as she introduces new elements of the magical world while slowly teasing out Maya's abilities. Soren was so strong and honorable when all he wanted was to mate with her. Sex is a huge part of the mating ritual so readers should be aware there are many graphic sex scenes in the book. The secondary characters are as intriguing as Soren and Maya and I couldn't put the book down. I'm looking forward to finding out what's next for the group.

I voluntarily read the story and all opinions are my own.

#Review: BONE HUNTER by Thea Atkinson

5 of 5 stars

From the opening sentence "I tasted blood" I knew I was in for a hell of a ride. Buckle up because Ms. Atkinson takes you on another Isabella Hush adventure that will keep you riveted with all the twists and turns in this book. Who are the bad guys? Good guys? Isabella is caught between a rock and hard place when a dark fae master delivers an ultimatum that requires her to retrieve a god's bones or he'll suspend the glamour around her apartment. She needs that glamour to stay safe from Scottie, a sadistic criminal who believes Isabella belongs to him. Unfortunately for Isabella, she can't ignore the fae master any longer. He carries out his threat and Scottie finds her once again and sends his thug muscle to teach her a lesson about running away from him. She's hurt and bleeding and it's only when Maddox shows up and somehow takes away the hurt and bruises that Isabella begins to believe Maddox cares for her. But can she trusts him and what about that dark fae master?

I love Ms. Atkinson's books and this dark fantasy doesn't disappoint. She's a master storyteller teasing out details about the other characters--Maddox, Fayed and the god bones Isabella is supposed to recover. Such a good twist! Make sure to carve out enough time to read this book because once you start, you won't want to put it down!

#Review: THE PRINCESS KNIGHT by G.A. Aiken

5 of 5 stars

I couldn't wait for this book to become available and "The Princess Knight" does not disappoint. War Monk Gemma Smythe has broken with her order to return home and support her sister Keeley, the Blacksmith Queen. With her younger sister Beatrice on the other throne, Gemma must convince her order that they should throw their support behind Keeley. Problem is, many in the War Monk Order believe Gemma is a traitor and want her executed immediately. War is raging throughout the lands as a third contender Cyrus, the brother in law to Beatrice, is making a bid for the crown of all lands as well. Gemma has her work cut out for her, but can she first survive the call for her execution?

I absolutely loved this book. It was serious and then had so many laugh out loud moments. Gemma is such a complicated character, but her love of family shines through loud and clear. I especially loved Quinn and his siblings. The Amichai centaur warriors were fierce and devoted to Gemma and Keeley and added so much to the plot. There were so many moments that had unique twists and turns throughout the book. Some of the larger questions were resolved, but Beatrice vs Keeley and Gemma will be the final battle to come in book 3. This book will be published in November and I'm already waiting for the final book in this amazing trilogy. Highly Recommended.

I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy and all opinions are my own.

Excerpt:

PROLOGUE:
The boy stood in the middle of the room staring blankly at the wall.
Choose well was all he remembered.
The room was about sixty paces long and probably half as wide.  It was two stories’ high with numerous oil lamps set along the upper walls that provided more than adequate lighting for the entire room.  A balcony ran along three of the four walls and provided a means to observe any event happening below.  There was one door leading in and out of the room, but it was blocked by a large, well-muscled man dressed completely in black.  His eyes were deadpan, like those of a cold-blooded killer.
The air was relatively cool, but the young boy felt a drip of sweat run down his back.  He tried to hide his nervousness beneath a façade of serenity while staring at the wall, but he could feel the butterflies roiling in his stomach, threatening to unman him.
The wall the boy stared at contained all conceivable manner of weapons, from short throwing knives to elegantly curved swords to long-handled halberds with wickedly curved barbs and spikes.  The boy had to choose something soon or forfeit his chance to test again for another year.  He would not let this opportunity pass, because this was the day he had trained long and hard for, the day he had anticipated for the last three years, and the day when he would finally prove himself worthy.  Today he would test to become an apprentice in the guild of assassins.
The rules of the test were simple: choose your weapon and fight.  Any novice who aspired to test for apprenticeship had twenty short minutes to fight and draw blood from their opponent.  Whatever weapon a novice chose to test with would be the school in which they would be apprenticed if they passed.  There were five schools: Sword, Knife, Axe, Staff, and Bow.  The tests were short, brutal, and bloody, designed to ensure that no one advanced who did not rightly deserve to.  Their opponents were fully trained brothers of the guild who gave no quarter or latitude to the would-be contenders.  Many tested for the honor, but few passed their first time, and some even lost their lives in the attempt.
Jeda had decided many months ago to choose a pair of fighting knives as his weapon of choice.  He was good with knives, both in hand-to-hand combat and throwing, and liked the way they felt perfectly balanced in his hands.  He had been steadfast in his weapon of choice until the moment he entered the room and saw Brother Mave waiting for him.  A slight grimace passed over his face, but he quickly composed himself.  The last thing he wanted was for Mave to see he was scared.  Mave was dressed in the traditional, assassin color of black, but also wore a distinguishable symbol of red, crossed swords on the bandana holding back his hair.  That symbol marked him as a preeminent sword expert within the guild, second only to the masters in the School of Swords.  Knives were excellent, close-in fighting weapons, but Jeda was not good enough with them to draw blood from a sword expert like Mave.  Now he stood immobilized, staring at the weapons wall, furiously trying to think of what he should do next.  He knew he would have to choose wisely if he was to survive this day.
Damn, of all the brothers in this guild, how could I be so lucky as to get Mave? Jeda thought sarcastically.  He stepped forward and reached for the weapon he thought he would have the most luck with.
No sense in changing now.

Mave saw the boy look his way and inwardly smiled.  He knew the boy was scared, and rightly so.  It was not chance that brought him here today, but a carefully orchestrated scheme to make sure he tested the boy.  He felt Jeda was no more than a third-year upstart who did not deserve the opportunity to test for apprenticeship.  Most novices trained for five or six years before petitioning to test.  Mave was going to make sure that the boy did not pass.  That was as it should be, for it was Mave who had brought Jeda to the guild in the first place.  He should be the one to put the boy in his place and teach him humility.
Jeda finally reached up and took a pair of fighting knives off the wall.
Mave shook his head at the boy’s choice.  I knew it.  The boy may know how to fight, but he knows nothing of winning.
“Begin,” said the dispassionate voice of the master-in-attendance judging the test.
Mave strode forward, closing the distance and eliminating the only advantage knives would give the boy.  Without the distance to throw them, they were completely useless against swords.
The boy stood stock-still, visibly trembling as Mave approached.  His frozen fear was pathetic and almost embarrassing.  Mave would cut him slightly with his first blade and knock him out with the handle of his second, putting a quick end to this charade of a test.  Twirling his swords in a deadly dance, Mave felt no sympathy for the boy.  Today’s failure would set Jeda back at least a year and give him more time to learn proper respect and modesty, traits Mave felt he was sorely lacking.
The young fool doesn’t know what he’s in for.
As Mave swung the first blade to catch the boy across the cheek, something unexpected happened.  Jeda dove forward, under the first blade, and whipped one of his knives at Mave’s exposed side.  Mave deflected the throw with his second sword.  If he had not been such an excellent swordsman, the throw would have a scored a hit.
Maybe not quite the fool I took him for.  Mave spun around swinging the sword in a deadly arc to face the boy as Jeda jumped to his feet.  The swing cut the boy high on the arm and he cried out in shock and pain.  The cut was deep and bleeding heavily, rendering the arm useless.  The boy went down on one knee, but Mave moved cautiously forward.  He would not be caught off-guard a second time by the boy’s cleverness.  When Mave came within a sword’s reach of him, the boy jumped forward into a diving roll and threw his second, remaining knife.  Mave anticipated the move and easily deflected the throw, shaking his head at the boy’s stupidity in throwing away his last means of defense.  As he turned to face Jeda, he realized his mistake.  He felt a blade slice through his trousers, burning and drawing a bright-crimson line along his leg.  Jeda had used the second throw to distract Mave from his true objective: the first blade that Mave had deflected.  The boy had used his diving roll to reach that first blade, left forgotten on the floor.
How did he get that knife so quickly and throw it so precisely? Mave wondered, looking down at his bleeding leg.
“Enough.  Blood has been drawn by Novice Jeda,” said the master’s voice from the balcony.  “He is elevated to the rank of apprentice.”
Mave studied Jeda with a smoldering anger.  He was a good fifteen feet away and was wobbling on his feet from loss of blood.  It didn’t seem possible that he could have thrown that knife in his condition.  Mave knew the boy must have somehow cheated.
This is not over; no one makes a fool of me.

Excerpt:

It would be a good day no matter if it rained, snowed or was devastatingly hot.  Today was the graduation ceremony for the School of Advanced Studies at the Otharian Institute for Paranormal Studies.  His only son, Tyrian, was graduating from the School of Telekinesis in less than an hour and he beamed with pride as he thought of his son graduating from the prestigious program that produced the best of the best.  Ty was an exceptionally gifted telekinetic and had finished in the top ten percent of his class.
Rylee had a detailed plan for his only son, methodically grooming Ty for the eventual role of presiding over the Persing Duchy.  Now that the school lessons were finished, Rylee planned to continue his son’s education with lessons on governorship and rule.  Since his eighteenth birthday earlier in the year, Rylee had been bringing Ty to the Governing Council meetings to see first-hand the workings of government.  Ty had matured well in the last few years and Rylee was confident that his son would make a fine duke.
“Katelle, dear, I do hope you’re almost ready.  We don’t want to be late for our son’s graduation.”
Duchess Katelle Persing was sitting in front of the mirror in her dressing chamber, fumbling with the clasp of her favorite necklace.  She called out to her husband in frustration. “Please Rylee, don’t hurry me.  I’m almost ready, but I’m having trouble fastening my necklace.”
“Yes, yes, I understand, dear.  Take your time, I’ll be waiting.”
Rylee paced around the outer chamber.
“Katelle, I was thinking how tragic it is that Levon and Lilliana can’t be here to see Darius and Dyla graduate today.  They would have been so proud of them.  I still can’t believe that they’re gone.  It’s utterly preposterous that the accusation of them being involved with smugglers is still being bantered about in the Grand Council after all this time.  The investigation that Avikar headed up was a travesty of justice.  These times we live in are enough to try a man’s sanity.”
“Rylee, please.  Let’s not talk about that today.  You know my feelings on that subject.”
Rylee stopped in front of the mirror to remove an imperceptible piece of lint off of his jacket.  He began to adjust his sword and scowled at the way it hung at his side.  “Yes, my dear, but I’ll never be convinced of their guilt, and I have voiced my suspicions to some of our friends.”
“Really?  I’ve asked you before not to talk to anyone besides the family about that whole sordid affair.  Who knows how people really feel or think about such a delicate issue?  Besides, at the moment, I need you.  Can you come in here and help me fasten this necklace?”
“Yes, I’ll be there in a moment,” Rylee replied, still fussing with his sword.
Katelle sighed and continued struggling with her necklace. If this wasn’t so expensive, she silently threatened, I’d throw it away.
A slight rustle of the balcony drapes behind her briefly caught Katelle’s attention.  If she had not been so distracted with the intricate fastening, she might have seen the black-draped figure slip through the window and hide behind the drapes.
“Wonderful, there’ll be a breeze today,” she mumbled.
The assassin peered around the drapes to locate his targets.  The woman was sitting at the bench.  Luckily for him, her head was down, her hands in her lap.  He moved with cat-like grace and within a few strides was directly behind her.
“Thank goodness you’ve finally came to help me,” she said without looking up.  “Could you please...”
He sliced the razor sharp stiletto under her chin, cleanly severing her throat from ear to ear.  She didn’t utter a sound and her head slumped forward.  The assassin quickly moved away from the woman and stood behind the open bedchamber door.
Rylee strode into the bedchamber.  “Are you still fussing with that necklace?”
He stopped short, transfixed by the scene in front of him.  There was a large, red stain flowing down the front of his wife’s gown. “Katelle, what’s wrong?”
The grisly scene had its desired effect on the duke.  The assassin silently moved behind him, snaking his arm around Rylee’s neck, choking off any sound.  He slipped the stiletto effortlessly between the duke’s ribs and into his racing heart.  He held Rylee close before slowly lowering him to the floor as his legs gave out.  The assassin shifted around to face the duke, relishing his agony.
Rylee’s eyes widened when he saw the assassin’s face hovering above him.  A spark of recognition entered his eyes.
“Nils,” he sputtered.
“My Lord Duke, I bring greetings to you from the Red Alliance.  The Alliance has taken your suspicions regarding the Telkur scandal very seriously.  You should have been more careful about whom you shared your opinions with.  Goodbye, Duke Rylee.”
Rylee’s final thought was of his poor Katelle and how right she had been. He should have listened to her.

 Reviewers Comments:

5 stars - The Quest For Nobility is a classic science fiction/fantasy adventure with lots of fun characters (my favorite is Eclair) and a twist on the Arthurian legend. The action takes place on two worlds, contemporary earth and Otharia, a feudal world ruled by dukes - and one would-be ruler of all. Amazon Customer
