#EXCERPT: FABERGE SECRET by Stephanie Burkhart

Excerpt:

A loud crash and the shattering of glass thundered through the room. Elise wrapped her arms around Dimitri's waist and pressed herself to him. Her shoulders tensed.

"What was that?" he asked, lowering his voice to a whisper.

More glass shattered, and footsteps thudded below.

"I think someone just broke into the museum." Elise bolted from his arms and lunged for her phone.

"What are you doing?"

"Dad always told me to call nine-one-one first, then call him."

"What is nine-one-one? Your emergency response?"

"Yes." Elise paused, then said into the phone, "This is five-thirty Main Street. Someone has broken into the Heritage Museum. They're still there."

Dimitri fisted his hands. He couldn't let the intruders find Elise in the apartment. He had to go down there. He bolted for the door.

"Dimitri, what are you doing?"

He ignored her, flung open the door, and raced down the stairs. His footsteps rang in his ears as he dashed through the hallway, entering the museum through the back, then ran into the main display room. Two men dressed in black with ski masks over their faces looked up at him. Dark shadows from the outside street lamp filled the main room.

"Stop!" Dimitri yelled in Russian, letting his eyes get used to the low light.

They froze, caught off guard by Dimitri's voice.

Interview with Celeste Grande, LIVE ME

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series?
Live Me is a new adult contemporary romance that takes you through the life of Evangelina Ricci. Evangelina is a girl who leaves the town she grew up in with her best friend in order to escape the dark past that plagues her. Evangelina is very guarded and closed off, although she puts on a façade to the world to make them think otherwise. Once at college, she meets Blake Turner, the guy who will blow her world wide open and demolish the make-shift walls she’s kept so perfectly in place all these years. Live Me is part of the Pieces of Broken series.

What factors influenced your decision to self-publish your book(s)?
Two things.
1- I’m a major control freak. I don’t take orders well and I’m very opinionated, especially when it comes to something I’ve created. 2- I don’t like to wait. Querying and getting accepted takes an awful lot of time and it took me three years to get Live Me to the point that I was comfortable publishing as it is. I didn’t want to wait any longer.

If you used a graphic designer/publisher’s designer, how involved were you during the creative process for your cover?
I was completely hands on in the full design of the cover, down to the models. I wanted a good representation of Eva and Blake. It was also important to me that it was eye catching and that even the back cover had pieces of the novel.

Do you outline your story or just go where your muse takes you?
I have a general idea where the story is going, but characters are pushy f*ckers sometimes and think they should have a say. They tend to take things where THEY think it should go. And that’s okay. Because it IS of course their story to tell. I am merely a moving pen. Yes, pen. I hand write my books.

Did you hire an editor to review your manuscript before publishing?
Yes, two of them. And a proofer. I’m paranoid. And anal. If you only knew how many times this book has been worked over…

What have you’ve learned during your self-publishing journey?
The struggle is real. You can have amazing words and amazing characters, but the market is rough to crack. However, it’s a community like no other. People genuinely care and want to help. It’s the most passionate place to be and I’m proud and humbled to be a part of it.

Besides Amazon, are there any other sites where your books are for sale?
So far, Barnes and Noble and Kobo. iBooks is coming, but I need a hand with that one, so keep your eye out. Google + is toying with me and telling me they aren’t accepting any more. (Are they for real?)

Do you find it difficult to juggle your time between marketing your current book and writing your next book?
At the present moment, this is my greatest struggle. Live Me just released and already the second book in the series is in high demand. So, I need to find ways to split myself to make it all work.

Some fun facts about you, which do you prefer – dogs or cats? Chocolate or vanilla? Coffee or Tea? Talk or Text? Day or Night?
Dogs, always dogs. Cats freak me out. I feel like they’re smarter than me and planning my demise. If you put an IV in me, you may find chocolate running through my veins. And coffee, preferably pumpkin flavored. I used to talk on the phone all day long, now I ignore it half the time and don’t listen to my voicemails. Text me, please. Day, although I’m a vampire as of late. (God, I wish I was for real)

What’s next for you?
I would like to tie up Eva and Blake’s story as quickly as possible. There is a possibility of a third installment if I can make it work, which will be featured in Blake’s POV. I also see a story for Eva’s sister, Abby, and I would LOVE to give Jace a book if I could figure out how to master writing m/m. There are so many things floating through my head that I have to hope to have the time to get them all out. You’ll have to just follow me and stay tuned. XO

Genres: Contemporary, New Adult

Synopsis:
Broken…
Shattered…
How can you begin to live again when you’ve already been forced to…die?
Evangelina Ricci is trapped in a world that’s a never-ending nightmare, a constant ache in which consumes her every breath. Unable to bear the torture any longer, she does the one thing she can to take back control.
Run.
With her best friend Jace in tow, Evangelina attempts to escape her darkened past by leaving for college and diving head first into an aggressive schedule, determined with everything she is to make a name for herself. There’s only one problem—she can’t run away from the demons she struggles with. The demons that’ll forever be there, locked inside, battering her soul. Hiding behind a flawless façade, Evangelina faces her ghosts until her world is turned upside down, invaded by…him.
Blake Turner. Sweet, witty, flirtatious and drop-dead gorgeous, he finds Evangelina at every turn. Scared he’ll uncover the truth she keeps so well guarded, Evangelina tries her best to put on her act, deterring him like she has so many times before—only this guy’s different. He’s relentless. Utterly, absolutely and completely relentless. He sees her and he wants her and won’t stop until she’s his.
Will Evangelina succeed in pushing Blake away? Or will he break down her walls and be the person to make her realize life is worth living?

#Excerpt: FAIRLY CERTAIN by Deborah Ann Davis

Excerpt:
“Enjoy the benefits of our station, here at the tournament, my dear,” Lord Robert murmured against her hair. “I shall buy you a beautiful new dress, and—”

Mirth bubbled up in Rianne. “Lord Robert, I cannot compete in a dress.”

He released her and stepped back so quickly she staggered with his absence. Alarm flashed through her at his reddened face. She had never seen such a thunderous expression.

“You will not compete,” he declared. “Archery is a sport for warriors, not wenches.”

“Wenches?” Rianne’s spine stiffened along with her resolve.

“Aye, wenches. Why? Does the word displease you? What word would you choose?” He regarded her with disdain. “Tell me, Maid Rianne, do you appear more a lady or a wench?”

Unbidden, her palm swung up to strike him, but he intercepted her hand. With a harsh laugh, he shoved it away. Without a thought, she took a step back, stripping her bow from her shoulder as she moved. Grasping the bow’s end with both hands, she swept it in a wide arc, catching him behind his legs and upending him. He landed on the ground with an audible thump.

He stared at her from the flat of his back, mouth agape.

For a moment, she stared back, her own jaw slack with disbelief at her uncharacteristic behavior. An odd exhilaration filled her.

“The word I would choose is warrior, m’lord.” She pointed the bow towards his nose. “I am done with you. You shall see what a warrior can do at the competition.”

She ran off, escaping into the crowd before he could stop her, but his parting words fell like a shroud on her shoulders, dimming her elation.

“You are no warrior. You are but a maid in boy’s clothing. And nothing more.”

BLURB:
Fairly Certain is the unlikely adventure of nineteen year old Petir Capota, a computer geek who finds himself back in the days of Robin Hood after falling out of a tree in Connecticut. He awakens surrounded by a band of young British scavengers, clothed as if in Old England. His instinct to freak out is tempered by the arrival of a fair maiden wearing a bow…and arrow. Normally, fair maiden types don’t go for computer geek types, but for some reason, Petir is fairly certain he can do whatever he wants in this realm.

With the conflict of the Royals escalating, Maid Rianne has joined the outlaws hiding in the forest, outwardly defying the handsome and accomplished knight to whom she is promised. She is fairly certain she merely feels flattered by Lord Petir’s uncensored admiration of her skills with the staff and bow, the same unmaidenly pursuits disdained by her own knight. However, that does not explain the quickening of her pulse produced by Lord Petir’s unguarded gaze.

The outlaws bring Petir to their camp to tend his injuries. To Petir’s delight, and to Maid Rianne’s dismay, they invite him to join their merry band. It’s all fun and games until she is captured by the enemy. Now, a geek with no ability to defend himself must find a way to rescue the fair maiden.

#Excerpt: AS DRAGONS FROM SLEEP by J. Ellen Ross

Excerpt:

From their position on the hill, Leisha watched the Deojrin advancing, creeping closer to their position. Still too far away for any of them to threaten her soldiers, she knew the first rows of enemies fell well within her range. As she stared, transfixed by their neat ranks, the hill disappeared and then the sky, until row after row of her enemies filled the whole of her vision. Blood pounded in her ears. She could start freeing or killing them now. Time seemed to draw out in front of her, a long line of possibilities, of victims.

“Leisha.” Distantly she heard Avrid’s warning. “Look at me,” he commanded while brushing his mind over hers, demanding all of her attention.

Avrid saw her breath coming in short gasps and her pupils shrunk to pinpricks. “I know what you’re feeling. I remember my first battle well. The signal will come soon. Take a breath and relax. Bloodlust is not needed here.”

Confused, Leisha looked at him and then back down the hill. Why did he want to deny her nature? Born a weapon, now placed in Andelko hands, she stood here to save her kingdom, her people, herself. Her blood coursed, fast and furious, driving out all doubt and the vulnerability she loathed. Power coiled around her, up her legs, around her waist and shoulders, seducing her, reminding her what she could do if she just called on it. Today she would hunt and kill, just as she was meant to.

 Blurb

Two years have passed since the attempted coup that nearly cost Leisha, Queen of Tahaerin, her crown, her lover, and her life. With her fractious and peevish nobles cowed into submission, she can finally enjoy the peace she work so hard to forge.

But, war has come to the kingdoms of Ilayta. Sailing over the horizon, vicious invaders arrive first on the shores of Tahaerin. Under the banner of their nameless god, they threaten to drown the land in blood and bring a weapon never imagined here.

Leisha will fight ferociously to save her kingdom and her people, while once more, powerful men plot against her. Conspiracies she thought long dead return and her one-time lover reappears with grand promises. One of her closest friends and advisers guards a secret that threatens everything she has built. Isolated and betrayed, she has only a pitifully small army and a handful of people she can trust.

As her enemies drive her from her home, turn friends against her and threaten her life, where can Leisha turn?

#Excerpt: IMPROPER WAGER by Kristabel Reed

Excerpt:

“I’ve observed you this evening,” he said as they stepped outside.

“I’m well aware,” she said with the control that so fascinated him.

He raised his eyebrow and bit back a smile. Oh, that restrained passion captivated him. “I’d no idea you were so skilled at the games,” he said instead, leading her carefully along.

Watching her, he had the feeling she knew his game and didn’t rise to the bait. Jonathon bit back another smile.

“You didn’t give me an opportunity to show you the other night,” she said with a small grin that was more pride in her talents than interest.

But her gaze remained steady on his, darker in the shadowed balcony. Miss Harrington stood straight, with none of the deference normally given a duke. And none of the deference a woman in need of a suitable match to return to England ought to show.

She fascinated him all the more.

“And if I’m ready now?” His voice lowered, and Jonathon didn’t fool himself when he saw her breath hitch.

Her smile turned predatory. “I wouldn’t mind relieving you of the coin from your purse.”

He leaned closer and lowered his voice again. He watched her, knowing she followed his every move and was not unaffected. “Money holds no interested as a wager.”

She raised her own eyebrow in question. “You wish to make it a more interesting evening, then?”

“What terms would you suggest,” he asked softly, his breath a caress along her cheek, “to make it more stimulating?”

BLURB:
Two years ago, Isabella Harrington defied her parents and society, and ran off with her lover to Milan. They thought they’d conquer the world at the gaming tables. But her dream of happily-ever-after led to nothing but debts and a shattered heart.

Abandoned and left on her own in a foreign city with little but her wits and skill, Isabella managed to survive. Survive and thrive, commanding the cards until she won enough to send for a very particular matchmaker.

Isabella needed a way back into the society she shunned and what better way than through a proper, aristocratic marriage? And this matchmaker of note would be her key back home to England.

Traveling the Continent, Jonathon, Duke of Strathmore, agreed to meet the mysterious Miss Harrington. Wary of the rumors surrounding her, a woman who vanished from London with only scandalous tales left in her wake, he hadn’t counted on the intriguing Isabella to thoroughly capture his attention.

Will a game of cards change both their fates? Will she become a mistress or a duchess?
