Interview with Susan Golden, ALL THAT'S HIDDEN

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series?
All That’s Hidden is the second book in my Sugar Shack series. The first book, Catnapped, introduces Jennifer and Ryan. All That’s Hidden picks up their romantic journey and throws some challenges at their bond. Catnapped was the fairy tale romance. All That’s Hidden reflects the realities of life. Jennifer is just starting up a doggy daycare expansion of her pet-sitting service. Strange things begin to happen even before she’s opened. And they eventually throw her into a world of international intrigue.

As her business-life becomes chaotic, her personal life experiences an upheaval that threatens her marriage and tests her trust in Ryan. It’s about secrets, hiding, looking beneath the surface, and trust. Serious issues, for sure, but there’s lots of fun, wit, and romance all served up with a side of nearly absurd. Life is never dull around Jennifer.

Do you have a favorite character?
That’s like asking a mother if she has a favorite child. I love them all. They are all unique and special in their own way. If I had to pick, I’d say Sugar, Jennifer’s sulphur-crested cockatoo. He’s the bird I longed for all my life, but never had. In some ways, he’s just a TV-watching, cardboard-shredding, regular bird. Like all cockatoos, he’s clever, a quick learner and a startling mimic. But he has this uncanny ability to fit what he’s saying at any given time to the situation. And he knows things. He’s like a feathery Yoda sitting quietly until he says the unexpected. He’s fun and funny and quite frankly, just a bit freaky.

Did you ever have a minor character evolve into a major one. Did that change the direction of the novel at all?
For these first two novels, not really. A few grew more important than I had thought they would be originally. But for novel three in this series, “Flippin’ Out”, John Evans, the security official for Ryan’s company, hijacked a good portion of story. Did it change the direction? Well, in this series, I didn’t plan much, I just went where it took me and the characters all told me who they were and what they wanted to do. It’s an astonishing thing how that happens. As a psychologist, I know it’s all in my head, but the way things in the beginning fit into events at the end, how they offer up solutions to situations you hadn’t contemplated, never ceases to amaze me. It’s astounding what the mind works on in the background.

Do you outline your story or just go where the muse takes you?
Catnapped and All That’s Hidden were my first two novels. I’ve conveyed factual information all my life for work, but I’ve never had a creative writing class. I had no idea really what I was doing, so, as I said, I didn’t plan. I got stalled on Flippin’ Out and wrote another novel before I went back to finish. I did make a plan when I sent back to it but I wouldn’t call it an outline. In my head, I had a skeleton of what I needed to finish. This writing journey has been a learning experience. You can solicit advice on how to proceed, but you need to find your own path. I plan more now, but I would say the muse goes where I want in the end, she just decides how we get there. I’m just along for the ride.

Did you hire an editor for your manuscript before publishing?
Yes. I think they are absolutely essential to putting out a quality piece of work. Because no one is stopping you from self-publishing should not be an excuse to have less than professional standards. Resources not withstanding, if you have the means to pay for professional editing, then I firmly believe you should do so. It’s not just about the quality of the work. My editor has helped me grow in my writing as well.
Besides Amazon, are there any other sites where your books are for sale?

What advice would you give to a new author just entering into the self-publishing arena?
It’s fun to have control. It’s satisfying to know no one is going to tell you no. Those are the positives. But you are alone. There is a great deal that you will be required to take on by yourself if you want success that has nothing to do with the quality of your writing.  You need a good story, of course. Nothing is going to take the place of that. But there is so much more and most of that is both time-consuming and not particularly fun. Write because you love it and have a story to tell. Spend time in the beginning researching and planning for how to go about those “other” things.

Besides writing, do you have any other passions?
I love to cook. I learned to sew when I was in junior high and have sewed on and off for my whole life. Recently, I’ve discovered machine embroidery and I have to say, I’m hooked.  I do volunteer work for several organizations and I am a critique partner of sorts for several people. I’m retired now and time is a resource I didn’t have in the past. I’ve unfortunately got a fairly long list of things I’d like to try doing. The cat inside me is easily distracted by bright and shiny objects.

Some fun facts about you – dogs or cats? Chocolate or vanilla? Coffee or tea? Talk or text? Day or night?
Animals of every stripe, chocolate, coffee, do not text me.
Day or night – depends. What are we doing? (Yes, my books do have some steam.)
Fun fact: I would much prefer to laugh than cry. I look at the world as a slightly absurd place. Amplifying the ridiculousness around me keeps me sane.

What’s next for you?
As I mentioned, I’ve written a number of novels after All That’s Hidden. I presently have a historical romance (Regency) that is in the querying stage with traditional publishers. So, I’m in something of a holding pattern regarding releasing those other novels that are completed. I do plan on putting out “Flippin’ Out”, perhaps as a self-publication by year’s end. And I’m currently writing another historical romance (1700s). Then we’ll see where the muse takes me. As I said, I’m not really a planner. Not knowing is a lot more fun.

Excerpt:

It would be a good day no matter if it rained, snowed or was devastatingly hot.  Today was the graduation ceremony for the School of Advanced Studies at the Otharian Institute for Paranormal Studies.  His only son, Tyrian, was graduating from the School of Telekinesis in less than an hour and he beamed with pride as he thought of his son graduating from the prestigious program that produced the best of the best.  Ty was an exceptionally gifted telekinetic and had finished in the top ten percent of his class.
Rylee had a detailed plan for his only son, methodically grooming Ty for the eventual role of presiding over the Persing Duchy.  Now that the school lessons were finished, Rylee planned to continue his son’s education with lessons on governorship and rule.  Since his eighteenth birthday earlier in the year, Rylee had been bringing Ty to the Governing Council meetings to see first-hand the workings of government.  Ty had matured well in the last few years and Rylee was confident that his son would make a fine duke.
“Katelle, dear, I do hope you’re almost ready.  We don’t want to be late for our son’s graduation.”
Duchess Katelle Persing was sitting in front of the mirror in her dressing chamber, fumbling with the clasp of her favorite necklace.  She called out to her husband in frustration. “Please Rylee, don’t hurry me.  I’m almost ready, but I’m having trouble fastening my necklace.”
“Yes, yes, I understand, dear.  Take your time, I’ll be waiting.”
Rylee paced around the outer chamber.
“Katelle, I was thinking how tragic it is that Levon and Lilliana can’t be here to see Darius and Dyla graduate today.  They would have been so proud of them.  I still can’t believe that they’re gone.  It’s utterly preposterous that the accusation of them being involved with smugglers is still being bantered about in the Grand Council after all this time.  The investigation that Avikar headed up was a travesty of justice.  These times we live in are enough to try a man’s sanity.”
“Rylee, please.  Let’s not talk about that today.  You know my feelings on that subject.”
Rylee stopped in front of the mirror to remove an imperceptible piece of lint off of his jacket.  He began to adjust his sword and scowled at the way it hung at his side.  “Yes, my dear, but I’ll never be convinced of their guilt, and I have voiced my suspicions to some of our friends.”
“Really?  I’ve asked you before not to talk to anyone besides the family about that whole sordid affair.  Who knows how people really feel or think about such a delicate issue?  Besides, at the moment, I need you.  Can you come in here and help me fasten this necklace?”
“Yes, I’ll be there in a moment,” Rylee replied, still fussing with his sword.
Katelle sighed and continued struggling with her necklace. If this wasn’t so expensive, she silently threatened, I’d throw it away.
A slight rustle of the balcony drapes behind her briefly caught Katelle’s attention.  If she had not been so distracted with the intricate fastening, she might have seen the black-draped figure slip through the window and hide behind the drapes.
“Wonderful, there’ll be a breeze today,” she mumbled.
The assassin peered around the drapes to locate his targets.  The woman was sitting at the bench.  Luckily for him, her head was down, her hands in her lap.  He moved with cat-like grace and within a few strides was directly behind her.
“Thank goodness you’ve finally came to help me,” she said without looking up.  “Could you please...”
He sliced the razor sharp stiletto under her chin, cleanly severing her throat from ear to ear.  She didn’t utter a sound and her head slumped forward.  The assassin quickly moved away from the woman and stood behind the open bedchamber door.
Rylee strode into the bedchamber.  “Are you still fussing with that necklace?”
He stopped short, transfixed by the scene in front of him.  There was a large, red stain flowing down the front of his wife’s gown. “Katelle, what’s wrong?”
The grisly scene had its desired effect on the duke.  The assassin silently moved behind him, snaking his arm around Rylee’s neck, choking off any sound.  He slipped the stiletto effortlessly between the duke’s ribs and into his racing heart.  He held Rylee close before slowly lowering him to the floor as his legs gave out.  The assassin shifted around to face the duke, relishing his agony.
Rylee’s eyes widened when he saw the assassin’s face hovering above him.  A spark of recognition entered his eyes.
“Nils,” he sputtered.
“My Lord Duke, I bring greetings to you from the Red Alliance.  The Alliance has taken your suspicions regarding the Telkur scandal very seriously.  You should have been more careful about whom you shared your opinions with.  Goodbye, Duke Rylee.”
Rylee’s final thought was of his poor Katelle and how right she had been. He should have listened to her.

 Reviewers Comments:

5 stars - The Quest For Nobility is a classic science fiction/fantasy adventure with lots of fun characters (my favorite is Eclair) and a twist on the Arthurian legend. The action takes place on two worlds, contemporary earth and Otharia, a feudal world ruled by dukes - and one would-be ruler of all. Amazon Customer

5 stars - What can be said? A great fanasty novel. Very well written, with some sci-fi thrown in the mix. Wonderful characters. Held my attention all way threw out the story. Martin is an outstanding author.  Amazon Customer

EXCERPT:
My mother came out with two shot glasses and a bottle of bourbon. She poured some liquor in each glass and put one in front of me on the coffee table. She downed hers before taking a seat on the couch next to me.
My stomach curled at the thought of mixing bourbon with my upset stomach.
“For some strange reason, Grams wants me to go to Italy. She said you had a secret to share, something that could explain why.”
My mother fidgeted silently, hands in her lap. I braced myself.
“Tom Rudack is not your father.”
I stared at the boring beige rug under my feet. I didn’t know what I expected her to say, but it wasn’t that.
I wrangled my bottom lip between my teeth and winced from the bruising I’d given it earlier.
“Stop biting your lip,” she said.
“Are you saying the man you were married to is not Ray’s and my father?” I raised my eyes to her face.
Chin lifted with an air of defiance I didn’t quite understand, she watched me, her brown eyes partially hidden behind long bangs, unnaturally dark for her age.
“He’s Ray’s father. Not yours.”
I let out a noisy breath and shook my head. “Then who… who is my father?”
“He’s a man from the garden center where I used to work. An Italian who came here on a work visa. He worked a year and went back to Italy.”
My real father was Italian?

#Excerpt: SCARS & SINS by Melanie Munton

Scars & Sins
Melanie Munton
(Brooklyn Brothers, #2)
Publication date: March 31st 2020
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

We are the Rossetti’s.
The exiled “sixth” family of the New York mafia. We’re the good guys.
People don’t fear us…much. They respect us.

The five of us? We’re the Brooklyn Brothers.
And we protect what’s ours.
You know when you have a little sister and she has that one friend that always follows you around like a puppy? For me, that was Roxanna “Roxy” D’Angelo. That was years ago, back when our fathers didn’t hate each other. Then they became enemies and she went off to boarding school in Connecticut.
Now, she’s back…and looking nothing like the shy girl I remember.
Cavorting with anyone from the five families is strictly forbidden to someone like me. So, I can’t figure out why I keep finding myself in situations with Roxy that could bring the force of the entire mafia syndicate down on our heads. Even if those situations are the wildest, most intoxicating experiences of my life.
But with the Sicilians in town and out for blood, times have never been more dangerous. If they find out about our relationship, they won’t hesitate to remove both of us from the equation so they can restore order.
We’re not Romeo and Juliet. They both died. And I refuse to let anything happen to Roxy. I have to protect her. From my family. From hers.
I hope she won’t hate me for what I have to do.
Because it might just kill her before any bullet can.

EXCERPT:
Roxy
“How’s Gia?”
His eyes softened. “She’s good, other than being annoyed all the time. She’ll be a senior at NYU. Pre-law and she hates it.”
She and I had been best friends for our entire childhoods. Inseparable up until one disastrous night five years ago. That was why I’d been around Ace so much over the years. Any time she and I had hung out, I’d always begged to come over to her place. My house had never held much appeal because after all, Ace wasn’t in it. And knowing Gia as well as I did—or used to—she would have definitely hated going pre-law.
God, I missed her.
“I’m sorry to hear that. Um,”—I bit my lower lip— “can you tell her I said hi?”
His expression turned to that of an adoring older brother. “Of course.”
And that was why my crush had never gone further than a crush.
I was just another little sister to him.
Gia and I were the same age, three years younger than Ace. He had basically lumped me into the same category as her years ago: annoying younger sister. Trailing after him, hanging onto his every word, I had made a giant fool of myself. Even worse, I knew his four older brothers had teased him to no end about it. If Ace had ever been protective of me, it was always in an angry, brotherly way, not in a jealous, possessive type of way. Which was what I’d always secretly longed for.
Because I’d never—not once—thought of him as my older brother.
Not for one second.
“Maybe you guys could hang out sometime,” he added. “She’d love to see you.”
My heart ached.
There had been a gaping hole there ever since I lost her years ago to the rising tension between our families. Our fathers had once been good friends, then they had a falling out, and any connection between the D’Angelos and the Rossettis had been obliterated in an instant.
“I think you and I both know that’s not possible.” My voice was resigned. “Nothing has changed.”
To my astonishment, his eyes flared as they slowly raked down my body.
Okay, I’m definitely not imagining that heat.
Was he really looking at me like that? Like he did in my pathetic, hopeless dreams? But where was it coming from?
“Oh, I don’t know,” he rasped, his gaze once again landing on my mouth. “I’d say some things have definitely changed.”
Whaaaaaaaat actually is happening here?
His words knocked the air right out of my lungs.
The level of bafflement on my face was surely making me look like an idiot, but nothing could have been done about it.
He took a meaningful step toward me. “Have you been a bad girl, Roxy?”
I’d been staring at his mouth, the way the corner of it twitched with a hint of a grin, but my eyes flew up to his at those words.
Because they dripped with innuendo.
Since when did Ace speak to me with innuendo? Did he suddenly forget who he was talking to?
Embarrassingly, I felt my cheeks heat. He probably thought I was an inexperienced, naĂŻve child at seeing how easily I could still blush.
But I was only one of those things, thank you very much.
My voice unintentionally came out as a whisper. “Excuse me?”
His eyes briefly flitted to the confessional booth. Then that grin came back. “What kind of sins does a girl like you need to confess?”
There was one thing about Ace that had always stood out for me above so many others.
That inquisitive expression of his I mentioned earlier was one that could swiftly turn very intense. Particularly when he was looking at a girl he was interested in. His eyes would go molten, his jaw would harden, his lips would tighten, and when his chin dipped almost imperceptibly lower, he really meant business. And by business, I meant he was turned on. It was like his signature look that he always gave pretty girls.
For years, I’d desperately hoped Ace would one day look at me like that.
That I would make his jaw clench, make his mouth firm. That I could cause the kind of visceral reaction in him that made his hands fist with the uncontrollable urge to grab me and haul me to him. I wanted his need to kiss me to light a fire in him so hot he’d do anything to relieve the burn.
I’d seen him look at so many other girls just like that, and it had broken my heart each and every time. I’d fallen asleep countless nights, praying that I would eventually be the recipient of his heated inspection.
And for the first time in my life…Ace was looking at me.
Just.
Like.
That.

Harry loves to race around the streets of Dog Town. When he stumbles upon the lost city of cats, he finds himself in a race against Dog Town’s fastest canine, Grizzly.

The winner of this race will have the power to save Cat World, or destroy it.

Harry wants to win, but there is one small problem. The race is in the ocean, and Harry is terribly afraid of water.

Can Harry overcome his fear of the water and save Cat Town?

Excerpt:

Harry spied the bell of the clock tower over the treetops. He heard the bell strike the first of twelve chimes.

“First place, here I come,” he whooped with delight.

“First to the finish line has to take a bath,” Fleabag shouted, right on his tail.

“Stop changing the rules, Fleabag,” he barked.

“At least we can tolerate a bath,” Junior cried out, though from further away.

Junior was talking about Harry’s phobia – called ablutophobia, a fear of water. Harry suffered terribly from it. He was even afraid to get too close to his water bowl in case it tipped over. And he never bathed. His brown coat could very well have been white underneath the dirt for all anyone knew.

He could see no point in bathing anyway, because he often rolled in something filthy afterwards.

Even now, the thought of water made Harry look up at the sky. Above was a wide expanse of blue without a cloud in sight. Just the way he liked it.

Sneaking a look behind him, he saw Junior trailing behind in third place. Junior’s attention was more on the traffic than on the race. But Fleabag, who was in second place, was gaining on him. She was competitive, probably more competitive than Harry, yet something other than competitiveness propelled Harry forward. Harry was the champion racer, and he’d been the champion racer for two years. He wasn’t about to quit and give up the title.

#Excerpt: PRIESTESS STORMS & STONE by Annie Anderson

Priestess of Storms & Stone
Annie Anderson
(Rogue Ethereal #5)
Publication date: March 31st 2020
Genres: Adult, Urban Fantasy

If there is one lesson I’ve been taught in my life, it’s that fairies are the absolute worst.

Finding a fledgling succubus in Faerie is like locating a needle inside a realm-sized haystack. With a guide I can’t trust and a goal more ephemeral than smoke, my odds of success are tenuous at best.
Not to mention, as the last Elemental in existence, I have a giant target painted on my back.
Because one half of Faerie wants me dead, and the other half wants to use me as a sacrifice to open the gates to Earth. But I swore I would find my quarry, and I will. Even if I have to rip the entire realm apart to do it.
There is a storm coming to Faerie, and that storm is me.
—

EXCERPT:
It was never a good sign to be drinking bourbon at ten in the morning, but after the week I’d had, I figured I was due. Self-medicating with alcohol wouldn’t take the sting out of my grief, in fact, it was likely to make it worse. But I’d needed a teensy little breather from my housemates after the last truth bomb had been dropped, and wrapping my head around my new knowledge required booze.
I could feel Della’s eyes on me, her acute vampire gaze boring a hole in the side of my face. She wanted an answer to her question, and she likely wasn’t going to leave me alone until I gave her one.
When are we leaving?
That question echoed against the walls of my brain with enough force to give me a headache. Melody was alive. She was alive, and my sister was dead.
But that didn’t make a lick of sense. Melody died right in front of me. I watched Aurelia send her soul on in a way only a phoenix could do. I watched her body burn in the flames of a funeral pyre. I needed answers before I could answer Della’s question.
Because I wouldn’t be leaving to hunt her down unless I was sure this wasn’t some kind of trick. I’d been tricked too many times in the last week, and I wasn’t falling for another one.
“Melody is dead, Della,” I whispered before taking another sip of bourbon, refusing to face my bodyguard. If I looked at her, I’d see either pity or censure, and I couldn’t deal with either.
“Then why is her son gone?” Della pointed out a big hole in the “Melody’s dead” argument.
Shit, fuck, and damn. I made a promise to Melody to keep her son safe. If it wasn’t Melody who had her son—and I highly doubted it was—then I’d have to go get him.
In Faerie.
Aces.
But hadn’t I earned a break? Hadn’t I earned the right to let someone else take up the slack?
You made a promise. You swore. You can’t turn away just because you’re hurt.
Those words cut through my thoughts sharp enough to bring tears to my eyes. I did. I made a promise to make sure her son was safe. And I’d keep it. Maybe it would make my soul burn just a little less. Maybe if I did this one thing, losing Maria wouldn’t hurt so bad.
Yeah, I doubted it.
I sniffed back the sting of tears, tossed back the rest of the bourbon, and managed to set the glass down without smashing it. I’d been on a smashing kick for the last little bit, and my living room had borne the brunt of it. At the time, I’d wanted to destroy everything Maria had ever touched. If I could just break it, burn it, wreck it, then it would have been like she wasn’t stamped all over every molecule of my house.
Wasn’t that stupid?
Like I wouldn’t see her every time I closed my eyes.
“Okay, I’ll give you that,” I muttered, finally answering Della’s question. “But I can’t just bust down the door to Faerie and find her. If it is her. We need way more to go on than a note and a can-do attitude.”
I peered down at myself. I had on black shorts and a black tank top. It was good enough for summer in Denver. All I needed was some flip-flops. Had I brushed my teeth today? Shrug. Was I wearing a bra? My tank had a shelf bra in it. It would just have to do. Plus, Barrett wouldn’t give two shits about what I was wearing. I located my flip-flops in their spot by the door, shuffled my feet into them, and raised my hand to snap my fingers.
But Della pounced on my hand before I could complete the task.
“What?” My whole body was on red alert, my eyes searching my demolished living room and relatively untouched kitchen.
“You can’t go out like that,” Della whispered furiously, her face a picture of panic.
Frowning, I looked back down at myself. Yep, all my parts were covered.
“It’s summer. Shorts and a tank aren’t going to turn any heads no matter how much ink is on display.”
A dawning realization lit up Della’s face before she winced. “You haven’t checked a mirror since you got back, have you?”

When Randi discovers a mysterious mark on her skin that matches an illustration in “A Handbook on Paragonhood”, she’s thrown into a world of powerful gods and ancient magic that she thought only existed in the myths. She’ll have to step out of her comfort zone—and into the dangerous streets of Grandin—to find a way to protect herself and the people she loves.

Randi’s not the only one with a secret, though, and she finds herself questioning who she can trust. Randi will have to wrestle with what it means to be a Paragon and how far she’s willing to go to do what’s right.

With the fate of the world on the line, can she live up to being one of the chosen?

Excerpt:

Granite floor, walls like black static, and out of the moving darkness looms a door. I push its handle down, opening the door to a huge space.

A man and a woman circle each other like raptors, each brandishing a knife. The static-fuzz wall to my left is covered in weapon racks—everything from maces to swords to guns—and stone braziers, while the wall to my right is lined with punching bags and benches. A seemingly spaced-out old man sits on one of the benches, and a middle-aged guy fiddles with something on the furthest bench.

I don’t think I’m supposed to be here.

The middle-aged man lifts his head to watch the fight and sees me. “New girl,” he tells the others.

Everyone stops. The other two men simply seem bewildered, but the lady-predator with the knife might just kill me, judging from her glare.

“Uh, sorry, I'll just go,” I stammer. I pivot on my heels, but behind me, I only find blackness. No door.

My gut drops.

“Don’t be afraid,” the male fighter says. “We won’t hurt you.”

I peek over my shoulder as he discards his weapon onto the floor. That's not a hazard at all. “Where am I?” The words come out in a squeak.

He scratches the side of his head. “It’s—well, it’s hard to explain.”

“We call it the dreamscape,” the woman says. “We Paragons come here to hone our skills. You being here means you found out.”

She must be referring to the mark and the myths. I found out what I am, and now I show up here. Makes sense in a dream-logic sort of way.

Interview with Michelle Davis, LEARNING TO BEND

What are your favorite TV shows?
Friends, Thirty Rock, Sex and the City, Scandal, Seinfeld, Cheers, and The Family Guy.

What is your favorite meal?
Salmon, roasted vegetables, and black rice – with a Caesar salad.

If you were to write a series of novels, what would it be about?
Perhaps I’d write a sequel to Learning to Bend. It might be fun to follow Jenna and Jackson as they experience life together in Bend. I’m sure I could think of something interestingJ .

Is there a writer you idolize? If so who?
Idolize is a strong word. But if I would idolize anyone, it would be Eckhart Tolle. His writing and insights are amazing. I constantly reread his books, and each time, I find new nuggets of wisdom.

How did you come up for the title of this book?
Part of me has always struggled with tight muscles. I still cannot touch the floor during yoga class. Yet, it wasn’t just my body that was tight – I also lived in my mind more than in my heart. It was easier to think than feel. But by digging deep within and embracing my own shadows, I’ve learned how to soften and become more flexible – both mentally and physically. It made me curious – maybe if I wove this theme into a book, others may also learn how to bend. Simultaneously, I began blogging – elevate is the name of the blog at michellemdavis.net. The goal of this site is to help others elevate to their higher selves by sharing thought provoking blogs. I think that Learning to Bend blends nicely into this philosophy.

BLURB:
Jenna Moore's flawlessly orchestrated life and engagement to Ben Kelly, “the perfect man,” vanish when she discovers a controlling side of her fiancĂ©. Confused and unsure of who she is without Ben, Jenna decides to uproot from her safe, predictable life in Boston and move to Bend, Oregon, hoping to find her answers there. It’s when she meets Jackson, a former Navy SEAL who battles demons of his own, that Jenna finds the courage to let go of being perfect and embrace uncomfortable risks, transforming her life through forgiveness, compassion, surrender and acceptance. Yet the rewards from discovering her true self exceed Jenna’s expectations – not only does she find the greatest love of her life, but she also understands what’s kept her from learning to bend.

Excerpt:

Twenty-two, twenty-three, twenty-four... one more, I think to myself, straining to finish the final pull-up. Twenty-five. Done. I then grab a thirty-five-pound kettlebell and begin the first of three sets of twenty swings. The clock on my nightstand says 4:41. I spend the next half-hour hammering my muscles with weights, knowing that is not the end of my morning workout – I still have a run. Welcome to my world. This is my daily practice, my religion. It’s the only stable aspect of my life. But I need it, crave it actually. It’s what helps me counter the nightmares and the pain.

It’s been over a year now. My thirty-four-year old body hasn’t physically changed since I left the SEALS. At six feet two, discipline and hard work have kept me at a steady weight of 197 pounds. In fact, my only variance from years of following the SEAL’s strict codes is that I grew out my hair. Now, it’s almost at my shoulders. I think letting it grow was symbolic at first, representing a departure from my former life as a Navy Commander. Yeah, those were the best years of my life. I loved what I did, and my guys were freakin’ awesome, totally dependable and loyal as dogs. But afterward, it was impossible to stay. I couldn’t trust myself.
