Interview with Phaedra Seabolt

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series?
At this time I only have one book published, Imperfection. The overall story is about Meara Falk, a college girl who finds out that there is more to the world than she had imagined. She is not some drop dead gorgeous girl, commonly found at the specific college she attends, but rather a plump geek. After a single night of fun, her life spirals into the unknown. This first happens by having a baby and then later when she is turned into a werewolf. Her son is kidnapped by a rival werewolf pack and now she is out to get him back.

It is the first book in my Pure Blood series. The second book has been written, but it is currently in the first stage of edits. I am hoping to have it published in 2014.

Do you have a favorite character?
I assume this is in reference to my book, and the answer is yes. However, he is not actually in the first book. His name is James Kearney. He’s of Irish descent with short dusty red hair and gorgeous blue eyes. He’s based on a character from a roleplaying game I once played. I have high hopes for him in the series.

Did you try the traditional route to publishing, i.e. querying agents/publishers?
I did query one company, but they were not interested due to the genre. After that I started talking to my book tour friends. I discovered that one of them was going to start her own publishing company, so I sent her my manuscript. The rest is now history.

How long before you got your offer of representation/your first contract? Was it for your first novel?
Ummm…About a month and yes it was for my first book.

What factors influenced your decision to go with a particular agent or publisher?
I saw this as a mutual risk/benefit situation. Since it was my first book, they were taking a huge risk on me. There’s no promise that my book will do well or that my writing is anything special. All that mattered was that they liked it. Since they were willing to take that chance on me, I decided to take a chance on a small startup company. I have known and trusted the owners for a while now, so I believe that they wouldn’t steer me wrong.

What is your writing process? Do you listen to music or do you like silence?
I write really well with my house quiet, but I have very little time when it is quiet due to my toddler. I have written with music which can be both helpful and detrimental when I want to sing along. Pretty much I just write when the inspiration hits me, and I tune out everything else going on around me.

Do you outline your story or just go where your muse takes you?
My first book had the shortest outline ever. My second didn’t have an outline at all and that allowed me to lose focus more often than not. The next one is going to have something more concrete to follow.

What kinds of marketing [twitter, facebook, blog, forums] are you involved with for promoting your book(s)?
We’re still early in the promoting process, but so far it has been on Facebook and Twitter. It will be on blogs for the tour very soon.

Besides writing, do you have any other passions?
My primary passion is taking care of my husband and son. I am expecting a new baby in January so writing will be difficult once this one is born. You could also say I am very passionate about selling my house. I spend a lot of time keeping my house clean in case we have a house showing.
