Interview with Brooklyn Ann, FORBIDDEN SONG

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series?
Forbidden Song is the 5th book in the Hearts of Metal series. The series focuses on people finding love in the chaotic and sometimes brutal world of heavy metal music, and currently features characters from three different bands. Forbidden Song was a fun one because the hero of the first book (Quinn Mayne, lead singer of Viciöus) is the bad guy in this one. Why, readers may ask? Because the heroine is his little sister and the hero is the womanizing lead singer of Bleeding Vengeance, a band that Viciöus often tours with.

Do you have a favorite character?
My favorites in my other series often fluctuate on my moods, but for the Hearts of Metal series, I have to say it’s Klement, the bass player of Bleeding Vengeance. Truth time here, I’m biased, since he’s loosely based on a bass-player and IT Guy that I had a crush on when I started writing the series. Eventually, I convinced him to date me. I still can’t read the character without picturing him.

Have you ever had a minor character evolve into a major one? Did that change the direction of the novel at all?
Yes, actually that scenario is what made this book happen. Back when I wrote With Vengeance, Cliff was supposed to just be me giving the finger to love triangles. In the beginning, the heroine, Kat, has a crush on Cliff because he’s the hot lead singer of the band. But she quickly loses her infatuation when she learns that Cliff is kind of a douche and that the bass player is smart, kind, and sexy. However, Cliff ended up being not such a bad guy, so of course, I totally had to give him his HEA in Forbidden Song.

Are you currently under a traditional publishing contract for future books or do you have manuscripts that you will self-publish? Are you doing both?
I’m a hybrid author. My Hearts of Metal series is contracted with Boroughs Publishing Group, but my Brides of Prophecy series is indie published. It’s been fun and challenging to do both.

If you used a graphic designer/publisher’s designer, how involved were you during the creative process for your cover?
I usually get to give feedback on the covers for my Hearts of Metal books. For my Brides of Prophecy and last three Scandals with Bite books, I did the covers myself because I was an artist before I was a writer.

Do you outline your story or just go where your muse takes you?
I do a bit of both. I’ll jot down notes about things that I know will happen in the story, but my muse often surprises me with how they get there.

Besides Amazon, are there any other sites where your books are for sale?
Yes. My books are on sale on Boroughs Publishing Group’s website, Barnes and Noble, Apple iBooks, Kobo, and Smashwords in print and ebook formats. Also, you can get them from most libraries either in print or in ebook.

Do you find it difficult to juggle your time between marketing your current book and writing your next book?
Big time. Aside from trying to organize time for each, I sometimes suffer from social anxiety, so that can make marketing tough. And you’d think that at least when I have writer’s block, I’d use my time to market, but no. I just get further demoralized. Luckily, I have wonderful friends and readers who make sure I don’t get caught in that dark spot for long.

Besides writing, do you have any other passions?
I was an artist before I was anything else, and I still love to paint and draw and do scratchboards along with doing the cover art and graphics for my indie novels. I also enjoy working on cars, even though I’m no longer an auto-mechanic. Oh, and I love horror movies. I’m such a big fan that I would love to write a horror novel or screenplay someday.

What’s next for you?
There are at least two more books planned for the Hearts of Metal series and several more Brides of Prophecy novels in the works. Between those, I hope to have a shiny new series in the works soon.

BLURB:

Now, she's determined to complete her research on group dynamics by touring with Bleeding Vengeance, even it means deceiving her brother and lying to the band's fabulous lead singer, Cliff Tracey.

Cliff Tracey hates being manipulated, lied to and deceived. He'd know, having gone through a string of exes who had done just that. When he thinks he's found a kindred spirit, and a beautiful babe to boot, imagine his surprise - and disappointment - when he learns she played him so she can tour with his band to complete her PhD. When he finds out why, he knows he's in double trouble because Quinn Mayne will kill anyone who touches his sister, and Cliff Tracey has all sorts of plans for Christine Mayne that involves more than either of them ever expected.
