Interview with Alexa Randolph, WITH LOVE, ELLA

Do you have a favorite character?
My favorite character is Ella Chambers. I find her to be a very strong person who does everything with her heart. She is always putting everyone and everything before herself. There are many parts of Ella that remind me of myself

What factors influenced your decision to self-publish your book(s)?
I did try to go through the traditional publishing route by querying an agent, but after a while of no luck I decided to it try this way. I did a lot of research beforehand and once I realized that the main difference is with self publishing you pay everything up front and in traditional publishing the costs come later through royalties and such I decided to just go for it. I liked that I would have more control.

Do you outline your story or just go where your muse takes you?
I normally outline my stories ahead of time so that I always have a guide as to where I am going. It helps to keep writers block away and throughout the chapter I will let my muse take me to different places.

Did you hire an editor to review your manuscript before publishing?
I like to edit myself, have people I know look through it as well as hire an editor to review before publishing. I think it is important to have many eyes reading it.

What kinds of marketing [twitter, facebook, blog, forums] are you involved with for promoting your book(s)?
I like to market my novel through social media channels such as facebook, twitter, instagram, good-reads and LinkedIn. I have been blogging, having booking signings, blog tours, and local TV interviews. I am very heavily involved and have done a lot of it on my own.

Do you find it difficult to juggle your time between marketing your current book and writing your next book?
Sometimes it feels like there are not enough hours in the day. I am always working on my books whether it is the marketing aspect, or writing and sometimes it feels like I should be doing one more over the other and it can be hard to decide between the two.

What advice would you give a new author just entering into the self-publishing arena?
I would say once you know that you are going to self-publish I would start the marketing part as soon as possible. I would build an author platform before you publish because it could really help you in the long hall. I would say take business cards or anything you can with you at all times because you never know when it will come up in conversation. Potential fans are everywhere and you will always have to market.

Besides writing, do you have any other passions?
I love to help others and I love to speak. I used to hate speaking in front of people, but now I find it to be invigorating. I love to read.

Some fun facts about you, which do you prefer – dogs or cats? Chocolate or vanilla? Coffee or Tea? Talk or Text? Day or Night?
I am a dog person. I love coffee and tea I no longer have a preference. I love to talk on the phone more than texting because you can’t take it the wrong way and you can feel closer to the person. I am a night person.

What’s next for you?
I am just going to continue working on novels and hopefully start to public speak.
