Interview with Jessica Redmerski, EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN

Did you try the traditional route to publishing, i.e. querying agents/publishers?
I tried the traditional route for three years, with no success in finding an agent, before I decided to self-publish.

How long before you got your offer of representation/your first contract? Was it for your first novel?
Only a week or more after THE EDGE OF NEVER was self-published and hit the best-sellers lists I was contacted by an agent, and shortly after that I got a two-book deal.

What factors influenced your decision to go with a particular agent or publisher?
My agent, Jane Dystel, has been in the publishing industry for many years, she has top-notch clients, and most importantly, she’s a caring and wonderful person. And so is my foreign rights agent, Lauren Abramo. I feel blessed to have them on my side.

Are you currently under a traditional publishing contract for future books or do you have manuscripts that you will self-publish? Are you doing both?
Currently, I am not working with a traditional publisher for any future books, and all of my upcoming projects are to be self-published. I will still consider working with a traditional publisher though.

What factors influenced your decision to self-publish your book(s)?
Not having any luck in doing it the traditional way certainly made the decision for me. I can’t even imagine—and I don’t like to—where I’d be right now if I hadn’t decided to go it on my own, and if I’d waited around for an agent or publisher to ever want to work with me.

Besides Amazon, are there any other sites where your books are for sale?
You can find my books for sale on Nook also. I tried to publish on iBooks but I couldn’t figure it out and got frustrated. :-S

What kinds of marketing [twitter, facebook, blog, forums] are you involved with for promoting your book(s)?
I usually just use Twitter, Goodreads, book tour hosts, and my blogs.

Besides writing, do you have any other passions?
I love being outdoors: hiking, swimming, walking, just being in nature feeds my soul.

Some fun facts about you, which do you prefer –
Dogs or cats? DOGS
Chocolate or vanilla? VANILLA
Coffee or Tea? COFFEE
Talk or Text? TEXT
Day or Night? DAY

What’s next for you?
In addition to completing my crime series, In the Company of Killers, and writing the sequel to EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN titled WINDS OF THE IRON FEATHER, I will be migrating over to my pseudonym, writing contemporary fantasy.

Thais Fenwick was eleven-years-old when civilization fell, devastated by a virus that killed off the majority of the world’s population. For seven years, Thais and her family lived in a community of survivors deep in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. But when her town is attacked by raiders, she and her blind sister are taken away to the East-Central Territory where she is destined to live the cruel and unjust kind of life her late mother warned her about.
Atticus Hunt is a troubled soldier in Lexington City who has spent the past seven years trying to conform to the vicious nature of men in a post-apocalyptic society. He knows that in order to survive, he must abandon his morals and his conscience and become like those he is surrounded by. But when he meets Thais, morals and conscience win out over conformity, and he risks his rank and his life to help her. They escape the city and set out together on a long and perilous journey to find safety in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Struggling to survive in a world without electricity, food, shelter, and clean water, Atticus and Thais shed their fear of growing too close, and they fall hopelessly in love. But can love survive in such dark times, or is it fated to die with them?
