Shadow Walker is Book 1 in a series called Bloody Hearts. It’s about a newborn witch and the two brothers that teach her the ropes of the supernatural world. I was heavily influenced by both Supernatural and Vampire Diaries. I hope it delivers heart-pounding suspense, snarky humor, a sexy love triangle, and brotherly banter.
Do you have a favorite
character?
Of course! The guys are my
favorites.
Thom is sweet, kind,
level-headed, but he also has an edge. He’s a fierce protector of the ones he
loves. Whenever the other characters are spinning out of control, I can always
count on him to fix the situation and tell them the truth right to their faces.
Liam is a sexy renegade
demon with a temper, but he’s also witty and loyal to the bone. He struggles with
his demon impulses and is a joy to write. His powers are also an endless source
of fun.
Have you ever had a minor
character evolve into a major one? Did that change the direction of the novel
at all?
Yes. The villain was a
nameless face to me at first. It was a congregation of demons, but I quickly
realized that I needed more.
I needed a more profound and
personal vendetta. Someone that wasn’t all black or white. Then came Frank
Hale, and while he says and does odious things, getting to know him has
completely changed the series from start to finish. He’s unhinged, smart,
misogynistic and disgusting. But he has reasons and motivations that make
sense. I tried to abide by the rule that the best villains believe they are the
heroes of their story.
If you used a graphic
designer/publisher’s designer, how involved were you during the creative
process for your cover?
I was super involved. My
designer is amazing! I told her my
goal was to be marketable and so she had to tell me if my ideas sucked or
needed revisions, but I chose the exact picture of the model. My sister and
best friend helped me look at dozens of half-naked men. That was actually a
pretty good night!
What is your writing
process? Do you listen to music or do you like silence?
Music!!! Almost all my
chapter titles are song titles.
Did you hire an editor to
review your manuscript before publishing?
Yes. I got a dev-edit, a
line-edit, and a proofreader. I’m French-Canadian, so if there was one area I
wasn’t going to overlook, it was the editing.
What have you’ve learned
during your self-publishing journey?
I must function as an artist
but also as a business. I need to keep my receipts for taxes (yuck), and budget
for marketing, and all those things I’d rather not do but hey, life is not all
hot men and chocolate! (Why not, though???)
Do you find it difficult to
juggle your time between marketing your current book and writing your next
book?
Yes! People think marketing
is a drag, but I found researching it totally time-consuming and—in a weird way—fascinating.
I learned about newsletters, reader magnets, ARCs, book tours, cover reveals. I
gave myself 6 months between my “okay, I’m publishing this” and my release date
to research everything and write the third book. I’m almost done with both. I
have no idea if I did any of it right! Ah!
What advice would you give a
new author just entering the self-publishing arena?
In a way, I’m almost just
starting myself, but I heard one piece of advice when I went to my first author
conference, and I stuck by it 100%.
Don’t worry too much about
what comes after and finish the damn book!
If it’s finished: research,
research, research. Think about the BEST way to market your book baby. Make
your decision on what’s best for your book, for you, and not what others think
you should do (after your research and weigh all the pros/cons, obviously.)
Besides writing, do you have
any other passions?
I love animals. I’m a
veterinarian by day. I’m also a fierce gamer.
Shadow Walker
Anya J. Cosgrove
Publication date: January 17th 2019
Genres: Adult, Paranormal, Romance
A newborn witch is rescued by two smoking-hot brothers. Can she unravel their dark secrets? Or will she lose her soul trying?
Alana sucks at witchcraft. Healing, telepathy, seeing through illusions… she can’t master any of it.
Sparring with the six-foot-three muscular Walker brothers doesn’t help her focus. Alana’s not about to let herself fall for a man—or a demon—especially not the ones that abducted her in an attempt to save her life.
When a bitter demon learns of Alana’s existence, he’ll stop at nothing to possess her and drive a wedge between the two brothers. If Alana can’t learn to use her powers, she’ll die. If she can’t discern illusion from reality, she’ll lose her mind.
Nothing stays black and white in a world full of shadows.
Demons, witches, forbidden love… visit the otherworld today.
