Interview with Ally Parker, PRIMAL INSTINCT

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series?
Primal Instinct is book one of the Prowler Series. Prowler shifters have their humanity tethered to an evolving wolf glyph. When their marking completes they turn rogue. Their only chance to survive is to find the one female strong enough to leash their beast. Prowler books carry a theme of tortured heroes, imperfect heroines and a journey where even tarnished characters find a place to belong.

More about Primal Instinct, book one of the Prowler series…

Freedom has been a pleasure denied to Mackenzie for the last five years.  Forced to do the bidding of a crazy man to keep both her sister and herself alive, she is sent on a mission. Her objective? Infiltrate a group of people and their compound.  The problem? No one mentioned they weren’t human.  Or, that she would be drawn to a certain sexy, addictive male.

Which will she decide, her heart? Or her freedom?

In a world filled with despair, Jaxx’s only chance to save his humanity is tethered to a woman he hasn’t met.  Finding her in an underground facility with his kidnapped protégé, was the last place he thought to find his savior.  In a web of corruption, he will have to find the truth and convince his mate, she is his.

Before it’s too late.

What factors influenced your decision to self-publish your book(s)?
During my author journey I realized I’m a bit of a control freak, lol. What appealed to me about self-publishing is that I get to pick my covers, book names, how frequently I publish and what I get to write about. I decided at the very start that I wanted to publish with the standard of a traditionally published author – but with all the control.

What is your writing process? Do you listen to music or do you like silence?
As much as I’d like to write to music, I can’t. I get easily distracted. The times I’ve tried to write to music and I find myself dancing away and singing along to whatever song is on instead of writing. Unfortunately, I need to limit the bright and shiny things that will snag my attention.

Do you outline your story or just go where your muse takes you?
In the book world you often hear the terms plotter (someone who writes down the plan for their book) or panster (someone who sits and writes by the edge of their seat). I’m some kind of mix and often bounce between both options depending where I’m at in the book. For instance, if I’ve hit a road block I like to write down five different directions the story can go and I follow my favorite with a chapter outline until I get back into a rhythm.

In saying all that, at the moment I’m in the midst of experimenting with hardcore plotting to see if it speeds up my writing process… time will tell.

Did you hire an editor to review your manuscript before publishing?
Primal Instinct has been through the wringer. Lol. It’s had developmental edits, copy and line edits to make it shine as bright as it can.

What have you’ve learned during your self-publishing journey?
What haven’t I learned? I went into this knowing nothing.

Absolutely nothing.

I often laugh at myself because I remember thinking at the very start of my author journey… ‘Writing a book can’t be that hard.’ Snort. Needless to say I’ve experienced a very steep learning curb—one that I’m still coasting along. There are so many aspects that I’ve had to learn… writing craft, story structure, writing voice, graphic design, website managing/design, and marketing amongst the list.

The biggest thing I’ve learned on a personal note is perseverance. I know that I’m not going to get everything right the first time or even the tenth time, but sticking it out, keeping my focus on my own grind has paid off, and now I can finally share Primal Instinct with everyone.

Do you find it difficult to juggle your time between marketing your current book and writing your next book?
Hell yes! This is part of the learning curb I’m trying to master. I had no idea the effort that goes on behind the scenes for authors. I’m a big list writer. I jot down all the things that need doing on my to-do and list and get through them the best I can. Sometimes I win… sometimes I have to say to hell with it and put on my big girl panties the next day.

What advice would you give a new author just entering into the self-publishing arena?
Hmm, where to start…

There is a lot to wrap your head around in the beginning, it can be overwhelming. Breaking things into segments helped me. For example; craft (showing vs telling, pacing, plotting, voice, conflict etc.), design (teasers, website), marketing (ads, social media content, groups, pages, newsletters etc.), technology (how to upload a book onto Amazon), and time management (set measurable goals, plan how to achieve them, and review if they worked using data you’ve collected). Having tasks in bite sized potions made things a teeny tiny bit less daunting.

Write. A lot! Then write more. It’s obviously one of the most important aspects to your business. You can learn all the other parts to authoring, but if you don’t have a book, what’s the point? Find your tribe—those people that will have your back and support you through thick and thin. Stay focused on your own grind—don’t lose sight of why you wanted to write to begin with. When you first start out there is so much to learn. The road is bumpy so you may as well wind down the window and enjoy the breeze in your hair every chance you get.

Some fun facts about you, which do you prefer?
dogs or cats? Dogs
Chocolate or vanilla? Chocolate
Coffee or Tea? Coffee
Talk or Text? Either
Day or Night? Night

What’s next for you?
Prowlers, prowlers, and more prowlers. I’m working on the next instalment of the Prowler series at the moment. I’m aiming for Primal Night—book two to be released around the end of November or beginning of December 2019, Primal Need in early 2020 and Primal Possession mid 2020.
