Interview with Dan Shaskin and Deb Welsh, A SEASONAL SONG

Do you have a favorite character?

Yes, Clarissa. She is an Instagram friend (a professional classical violin player) so she was the inspiration for the main character in the book.

Did you try the traditional route to publishing, i.e. querying agents/publishers?

No, we decided to do self-publishing from the start

Briefly describe your journey in writing your first or latest book. Have you joined any FB author groups to inspire and help you along the way?

Our first book was written in a rather unorthodox way. My brother and I, who live in different countries, started off, as an experiment each writing a paragraph and not having any plot predetermined. We eventually started writing pages and then chapters.

What factors influenced your decision to self-publish your book(s)?

We had a friend that self-published, so we decided to try it.

If you used a graphic designer/publisher’s designer, how involved were you during the creative process for your cover?

We went with an organization that create cover art. The artists provided examples as part of a contest, and we picked which one we wanted to use.

What is your writing process? Do you listen to music or do you like silence?

It depends on how complicated the scene is that I’m writing. If I need to concentrate intensely, I can’t listen to music. If not, I almost always listen to Vivaldi or Bach. I can’t concentrate if the music has lyrics.

Do you outline your story or just go where your muse takes you?

We did not have an outline for our first book, see comment above.

Did you hire an editor to review your manuscript before publishing?

Yes, highly recommend doing this.

What have you learned during your self-publishing journey?

It’s a lot of work but very rewarding too.

Do you find it difficult to juggle your time between marketing your current book and writing your next book?

Yes, it makes for a busy time. Do you try to write every day or carve out certain times during the week? We do.

What advice would you give a new author just entering into the self-publishing arena?

Have realistic expectations, and don’t expect to sell thousands of copies of your book. Write for your own enjoyment, not for money.

Besides writing, do you have any other passions?

Yes, music, songwriting

What’s next for you?

We are working on our next novel. We are collaborating on a new romance/musical novel. Currently it’s about 50% complete.
