Interview with Marsha Cornelius

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book?
Losing It All tells the story of Frank and Chloe. Frank was a POW in Vietnam, and when he got out of the war, he was too damaged mentally and physically to work, so he's been living on the streets of Atlanta for the past 12 years. Chloe has a husband and two small children, but when hubby takes off, she can't manage, and ends up in a homeless shelter. Their lives intersect at a soup kitchen.

Do you have a favorite character?
I loved Rick from my first book, H10N1. He's a bad boy, and he's sexy, but he's not a typical macho jerk. I guess he was my dream obsession. And when I finished that book, I missed him for a while.

Have you ever had a minor character evolve into a major one? Did that change the direction of the novel at all?
Maggie, in The Ups and Downs of Being Dead, started out as a minor character, but she grew quite a bit during rewrites. She became the main character's conscience. Even though he initially thinks he's just an old bat, he learns a lot from her over the years.

Did you try the traditional route to publishing, i.e. querying agents/publishers?
Yes, I tried the traditional route. I had an agent, and she was terrific. She loved my book, (H10N1) and tried her best to find a publisher, but after a year we both agreed that I should try the indie route. I'm glad I did, because the book was timely, and needed to get out there. It's a post-apocalyptic thriller, and if I'd gone traditional, the book would just be coming out this spring.

If you used a graphic designer/publisher’s designer, how involved were you during the creative process for your cover?
I've been fairly involved with the covers for all three of my books. I use a graphic designer, but in the end, I have the final say. With a traditional publisher, they come up with the cover and don't even ask what you think.

Do you outline your story or just go where your muse takes you?
With H10N1, I just blathered away at the computer. Anytime an idea came to me, I threw it into the stew. But that sloppy writing took two go-rounds with an editor before I had it whipped into shape.

Now I outline. That's not to say that the outline doesn't change, but it gives me a guide. I got halfway through my next book, rethought were I was going, redid the outline, and now I'm back on track.

Did you hire an editor to review your manuscript before publishing?
I definitely use an editor. And anyone who doesn't use an editor, isn't serious about the craft. I figure if top-selling authors like Stephen King and Karin Slaughter use an editor, what makes me think I don't need one, too.

Do you find it difficult to juggle your time between marketing your current book and writing your next book?
Managing my time is difficult. I'm writing fulltime, so I'm at home, and the distractions are too numerous to list. I do my best writing in the morning, so I've relegated marketing to the afternoons and evenings.
I write every day, even weekends, but some days are more productive than others. There's nothing worse than reading what you wrote yesterday, and deciding it's 90% crap.

What advice would you give a new author just entering into the self-publishing arena?
Get a professional to look at your final manuscript before you publish. I don't care how helpful your critique group is. They're too close to your book to see the flaws. And please don't ask friends or family to read your book. They will tell you they love it, even if it's the worst garbage they've ever read. I'm sure you would much rather hear about the book's flaws from an editor, than from reviewers on Amazon and Goodreads.

Besides writing, do you have any other passions?
I've really gotten into fitness. Now that I've face the fact I'm no longer young, I need to take care of this body, or it's going to let me down. I do yoga and Pilates for core strength and balance, and lift weights once a week, hoping to keep osteoporosis away.

I'm a lot more conscious about what I eat, too. I can't burn off a Krispy Kreme donut like I used to. Sure, I still love cookies and crusty bread, but it's all in moderation now.

#Excerpt: THE ROAD TO YOU by Marilyn Brant

Book blurb:

Sometimes the only road to the truth...is one you’ve never taken.

Until I found Gideon’s journal in the tool shed—locked in the cedar box where I’d once hidden my old diary—I’d been led to believe my brother was dead. But the contents of his journal changed all that.

The Road to Discovery...
Two years ago, Aurora Gray’s world turned upside down when her big brother Gideon and his best friend Jeremy disappeared. Now, during the summer of her 18th birthday, she unexpectedly finds her brother’s journal and sees that it’s been written in again. Recently. By him.

The Road to Danger...
There are secret messages coded within the journal’s pages. Aurora, who’s unusually perceptive and a natural puzzle solver, is hell bent on following where they lead, no matter what the cost. She confides in the only person she feels can help her interpret the clues: Donovan McCafferty, Jeremy’s older brother and a guy she’s always been drawn to—even against her better judgment.

The Road to You...
Reluctantly, Donovan agrees to go with her and, together, they set out on a road trip of discovery and danger, hoping to find their lost brothers and the answers to questions they’ve never dared to ask aloud.

In that expectant space between silence and melody, our trip began...

Excerpt:

I could count on one hand the things I knew were true about Donovan McCafferty:
He was twenty-three—just over five years older than I was.
He’d escaped into the Army at age eighteen and, except for a few quick but memorable visits, hadn’t returned to Minnesota until this past winter.
He had an excellent mechanical mind.
And he made me very nervous.
Underneath my skin, every nerve fiber was fast twitching. Just thinking about Donovan always did that to me...
It was 7:05 p.m. by the time I got to the auto-body shop where he worked. They closed at seven, but the light in the back was on and I knew he was in there. Not because I’d caught even one glimpse of Mr. Tall, Dark and Intense yet, but because the only other car in the lot was a crimson Trans Am with the giant Firebird decal in black and gold across the hood. His, of course.
I pushed open my car door, grabbed my tote bag with Gideon’s journal tucked safely inside and inhaled several lungfuls of the cloying summer air.
I didn’t make it more than five steps before Donovan came out. A solid, broad-shouldered, six-foot-two mass of frequently impenetrable emotions. Not impenetrable enough this time, though.
Even at a distance of half a parking lot, I detected two powerful sensations that crashed, one after the other, into my awareness:
One, he was hugely curious about why I was here.
And, two, he very much wished I hadn’t been.
He walked up to me and cleared his throat. “Car trouble, Aurora?” He glanced at my hand-me-down Buick, which had done nothing but purr contentedly during my drives around town. Donovan was the type to have noticed this, so I could tell he knew it wasn’t the car.
I shook my head. “I need to show you something,” I told him. “Privately.”
A small flash of amusement quirked one corner of his mouth upward. I was surprised he allowed me to read this, especially since he knew I could. Surprised he was letting me see that one of his possible explanations for my presence was flirtatious in origin—even as he immediately dismissed the idea.
I rolled my eyes. “It’s not like that.”
He pressed his lips together, but the amusement still simmered just beneath the surface. “Too bad. ‘We’re both young and inconspicuous,’” he said, parroting the hideously embarrassing words I’d said to him two years ago at our brothers’ secret high-school graduation party..
I fought a blush. “We’re not that young,” I told him, trying to stand straighter and look older. “And we’re not inconspicuous here.”
“Ain’t that the truth.” He turned and motioned for me to follow him inside. Led me into the back office and ushered me in. “You want me to close this door, too? Snap the blinds shut?”
He was mocking me, but there was a layer of concern beneath it. He knew something serious was up. In a town of 2,485 people, where you’d run into the majority of the residents a handful of times each week, I’d spoken with Donovan McCafferty in private exactly six times in the past five years.
Here’s to lucky number seven.

Interview with Sofia Gabel

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series?
Two Brothers: Origin is a young adult science fiction novel revolving around the lives of 17-year old Argus and Tai, twin brothers who were home-schooled up until their senior year. They are enrolled in public school and want to fit in with the other kids, but that’s going to be difficult because they have a secret they must keep.

When a government agent snoops around and discovers that the boys aren’t exactly regular teenagers, Argus and Tai’s lives are about to change forever. Argus falls for Lola, a quiet nerdy girl and makes friends with Dave, a bullied kid with a limp, and wants so much to be normal. When the boys’ guardian Aunt Celeste drops a bomb on them about their true origin, Argus is devastated. Things only get worse from there and not only is their freedom jeopardized, but also their very survival. Two Brothers: Origin is a trilogy and the second book is almost complete.

Do you have a favorite character?
I’m really attached to Argus, the main protagonist. I think he has more of me in him than his brother, Tai. Argus wants a simple life with friends and wants more than anything to fit in and be liked. That’s how I was in school. I was born in Australia and moved to the United States when I was five, so I had a strong Aussie accent and was different than other kids. I wanted to fit in and have friends. Argus has a secret that makes him very different. He’s a good, kind person, although he’s not afraid to defend his brother, himself or his friends. He’s strong and intelligent and I like that about him.

Did you try the traditional route to publishing, i.e. querying agents/publishers?
Yes, once I’d revised and edited until I couldn’t any more, I began the querying process. I prefer to focus on small publishers because there is a lot more publisher-writer personal contact. I tried querying a few agents, but as most writers know, agents are very hard to land. I feel so fortunate to have been accepted by Escargot Books and Music. The channels of communication are open and they are a fabulous group of people. I had a lot of input with my book cover, for instance, which you don’t generally get with a big publisher.

Do you belong to a critique group? Have they helped improve your writing?
I belong to two critique groups. One I’ve belonged to for over six years and the other only a couple of months. I think it’s essential for writers to have a group of trusted critiquers who will give their honest feedback. It won’t do any good to hear that it’s good or well-written without any mention of either why it works (so it can be duplicated) or why it doesn’t work. My groups don’t hold back and will pick apart every chapter I submit, which is exactly how I like it. Writing is a craft that must be worked on constantly and feedback is the way to do that. No matter how many times I revise or edit, my critiquers will always manage to ferret out something that’s wrong. That’s why I love and treasure them!

What is your writing process? Do you listen to music or do you like silence?
My writing process varies. There are times when I need absolute quiet, like when I’m revising or proofing, but when I’m getting into the creative aspect of writing, I need music. And that music varies as well depending on what I’m writing. If I’m working on an action sequence, I like energetic music, if I’m working on a sad or poignant part, I really need sad and slower music. Then there’s always my standby no matter what I’m writing; Mozart.

Do you outline your story or just go where your muse takes you?
I generally don’t work with outlines. I have the basic plot drawn out in my head, but I can’t work with an outline because everything changes anyway. I also love the fact that I don’t really know where my characters will go or what they will do until they do it! I become the characters (good and bad), so I’m living their lives as it plays out on the screen. And that’s fun! With an outline, it’s too structured and I find that I’m trying to work the story around the outline. For me, it takes the creativity out of the process.

Do you find it difficult to juggle your time between marketing your current book and writing your next book?
It is difficult to juggle marketing and writing, but that’s part of being a writer. Especially these days where writers are expected to do most, if not all, of their own promotions and marketing. Not that I mind, it’s actually kind of fun, but splitting precious time between marketing and trying to finish the next book is difficult. I really enjoy building a fan base and keeping in touch with people I meet, virtually, on the various social media venues.

What advice would you give a new author just entering into the self-publishing arena?
While I haven’t self-published, I know writers who have. My advice would be to do your best writing. Then edit, revise and rewrite until it’s as perfect as you can get it. If you’re not good at grammar or the technical aspect of writing, hire an editor and don’t publish your work until it’s in tip-top condition. You don’t want to make a bad impression to your readers. I’ve read both good and bad self-published books, but you certainly don’t want to fall into the bad category. Self-publishing is no different, in quality, than if you have a publisher. You want to get a reputation as a great writer, not one who rushed through the process (and it will show, trust me!)

Besides writing, do you have any other passions?
My other interests are archaeology (currently a grad student in archaeology), environmental/animal conservation issues, women’s equality issues and sustainability. I hold two undergraduate degrees in environmental resource management/conservation and wildlife biology and archaeology and have worked in both fields.

What’s next for you?
Right now I’m finishing up Book Two of the Two Brothers trilogy and working on a sequel to a historical romantic suspense novel, and a sequel to a science fiction novella and querying a paranormal romance and a thriller. After I finish the second Two Brothers installment, Book Three will start!

Excerpt:

Evan’s mouth hovers close to mine, his warm breath on my skin. The effect on me is weird, different to before, with other guys. Abby once told me she met this guy who didn’t even need to touch her and she got aroused. At the time, I concluded Abby was exaggerating. Now I think maybe there is something primal, where that can happen between two people. Because the heat floods through my body towards the surface, searing where his hand touches my face.
Evan’s eyes focus on my mouth. “Sorry I left last time.”
“Who said I was inviting you to stay last time?”
“Okay, sorry. But I did kiss you goodbye.”
Is he teasing me again? Because Evan’s mouth remains a tantalizing distance from mine, and he’s not kissing me. I shift, trying to disguise my rapid breathing and realize he’s waiting for me to make the move. Fine. I place my mouth on his, wriggling into him. Evan winds his hand into my hair, and gently holds my head to his, kissing me lightly, lips sparking power across my skin.
Our position on the sofa allows me to lean against Evan, half on top of him and I push myself into him, not taking my mouth from his. Evan’s arms wind around my waist and pull me closer. Where I’m lying on him, I can feel his erection against my thigh. Wow. I’ve hardly touched him - maybe I do the same to him? I pull my head back and meet his eyes, the hungry look I expected is held in them.
“Are you pinning me down so I can’t leave this time?” he asks.
I smile. “No. You can go now.”
“I think I’ll wait for Matt to wake up.”
With strong, rough hands he holds my face again and his tongue darts into my mouth. He tastes less of beer than last time. Our teeth collide and I move away from him, holding my mouth. He watches as the dress rides up over my legs.
The short black dress isn’t very decorous when it comes to lying on top of a man. But I’m not behaving very decorously. Evan’s hand slides up my leg, stroking gently.
And I’ve definitely had too much vodka but screw it. He’s here and he’s fucking hot and it’s my choice. I’ll deal with the emotional fall out later. I don’t know if it’s the alcohol, or the sexual confidence I’ve found from tonight - guys watching me in the Union and Evan wanting me - but I make a snap decision.
“Do you want to make it two?” I ask.
“Two?”
“Girls. You’ve slept with in Leeds.”
I’ve seen the look on Evan’s face before, the night in the pub when his mask slipped a few seconds. He hesitates.
“Ness…”
“You’re saying no?” I remove my hand from where I’m trailing fingers across his muscled stomach.
“Honestly, I don’t know what to say.”
I tug him towards me by his shirt. I’m a bit drunk and a lot reckless but what the hell, it’s about time I had some fun. “How about you hit me with some poetry, I hear the girls really…”
“Ness. Shut up.” He drags me onto him and crushes his mouth on mine, the breath sucked from my lungs as the urgency of his kiss overwhelms me. The tiniest amount of self-control I had just disappeared.

Interview with Kathryn Elizabeth Jones

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series?
Sure. My latest book is The Feast, and it's part of a series of parables written in fiction. Book one is entitled, Conquering Your Goliaths, and begins the journey of Ms. Virginia Bean, and her struggle to overcome after a job loss. Through the power of the five stones; listening, trust, optimism, tenacity and constancy, Virginia is able to overcome her Goliath. In book two, The Feast, Virginia has an even larger obstacle to overcome.

Did you try the traditional route to publishing, i.e. querying agents/publishers?
The first time around I went the traditional route. However, I quickly found that I had little to no control over the book's cover or price. Though I had a great editor, I found that I wanted a more hands-on experience when it came to publishing a book. A few years later, after selling a few copies of my first book, A River of Stones, my brother bought the rights back for me and I began the fascinating journey of self-publishing. Today I'm the owner of Idea Creations Press. I assist other writers to self-publish.

What is your writing process? Do you listen to music or do you like silence?
My writing process usually includes getting up early, writing on my blog, answering emails and then getting down to writing and/or marketing. I find that a strict balance between the two yields the best results, both in sales and sanity.

I use both music and silence, depending on my mood and the mood of the book I'm working on.

Do you outline your story or just go where your muse takes you?
I love this question. I really am a "by the seat of my pants" author, but that doesn't mean I don't outline some. With a brief outline I can get started on my book. If I spend too much time on an outline, I never get to my book and am burnt out even before I've begun.

What have you’ve learned during your self-publishing journey?
I'm going to make mistakes. I'm going to have to re-vamp. I'm going to learn something. It takes guts to keep going, but in keeping going the sales will come.  Connections with writers and readers is important, so is going out on a limb when it comes to marketing. Don't do what everyone else does; try something different and stand out from the crowd!

Writing a book and sending it out to the public isn't easy, no matter the avenue you decide on. I'm glad I ultimately chose self-publishing, because it's given me the freedom to plan and implement my work.

What kinds of marketing [twitter, facebook, blog, forums] are you involved with for promoting your book(s)?
I do all sorts of marketing. Reviews. Interviews. Social Media. YouTube. Book Trailers. Post cards. Book signings. Craft shows. I finally had to get it all organized and put everything into a binder. But it was still a mess, so, yes, I wrote a book. It's called Marketing Your Book on a Budget, and it's updated every year.

Do you find it difficult to juggle your time between marketing your current book and writing your next book?
Always. But I usually know where I'm at. If I'm feeling overwhelmed with marketing it's usually because it's time to write, and vice versa.

What advice would you give a new author just entering into the self-publishing arena?
Just go for it. Get all the experience you can writing. Get a good editor. And just write it. Don't dream about it. Just do it.

Besides writing, do you have any other passions?
I love to take long walks and long vacations whenever I can. I also enjoy photography and decorating.

What’s next for you?
Marketing Your Book on a Budget 2014. Expect some exciting new stuff come January!
