Medical Emergency

Miss Klutz here.

yesterday i was walking through the buildings to my office and i tripped on a steel transition piece between the tiles. now do you think i could just stumble like a normal person? of course not! i went sailing through the air and first landed on my knee, bounced and slammed full force on my right shoulder. as i'm splayed out on the floor, i was praying no one saw that but on the other hand was hoping someone could help me up.

long story short i broke my shoulder. ouch plus a few other choice words. i'm in a sling until i can go to ortho next week. swelling is too much to do anything else. ‪#‎sigh‬

typing with my left hand is not very good. if i promised you a post in the next few weeks, i probably won't get to it. sorry about that.

#Excerpt: FOOLS RUSH by Clara Knight

Excerpt:
He cleared his throat and took on a stern tone. “Listen, I don’t mean to sour your taste for marriage. All I’m saying is, don’t make the same mistakes I did. You’ve been a hard worker and you’re probably the first person I’ve trusted besides Charlie, Henry, and his wife in a long time. Forget the gold, come work on my ranch. You can live in the main house and cook. I’ll treat you like a son.”
“No.” Her breath hitched. Lying in this wagon for one night was enough to melt a girl’s resolve. Besides, she wouldn’t be able to keep up this deception much longer. “I’m off to make my own fortune.”
“I won’t hurt you. It’s obvious your pa was a drunk and used a switch often, but I would never.”
Bethany’s head swarmed with images of a happy home, of confessing the truth and falling into his arms this night.
“What is it? You can tell me anything. I promise. I’ll never hurt you. Trust me.” His words clutched her heart and squeezed tight.
“You can’t make that promise,” Bethany said while trying to keep her wits. Everything rested on her making it to the gold and striking it rich. Not ending up in the arms of some man who had already proven he’d turn to the bottle when things got tough.
“Bart, I can. We’ve both been through plenty. Perhaps it’s time for us to trust someone.”
“No. The minute you see that girl again you’ll lose your head. You’ve already turned to the bottle. I’m going to find gold and start my life on my terms.” Bethany turned to face away from him. “Go to sleep. I’m not talking about this anymore.”
She concentrated on steadying her breath and not thinking about the handsome man at her side in the darkness. He only spoke words. The first time things got tough he’d turn to a switch or his hand. That’s what all men did once they owned a woman.
Surely not every man. The tingling in her stomach urged her to take a chance, to wrap her arms around him and confess who she really was. Why did this man cause her body to feel these things when no other man had in the past? She wanted to escape into the cold rain to cool her burning skin and rid it of all this desire, but she had to remain in the wagon by Thomas’ side all night. A long and torturous night

Ian knows that Andrea, with her assertive attitude and her penchant for stilettos, is some woman! But her vulnerable heart is on the run, so he'll have to prove that his love, unlike his running, has limitless endurance--and once he catches this swift beauty, he'll never let her go.

Mountain Laurel -
So what if Laurel Morgan hadn't had a date since the senior prom? Interview with R.J. Merle, SAVAGE WINDS

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series?
Savage Winds (Children of the Elements, A Secret City Science Fiction Adventure Series, Book 1)

A dangerous conspiracy unfolds...
In Author R.J. Merle’s whirlwind start of the Children of the Elements series, a clumsy teenage techno-geek struggles to protect kidnapped children from a covert government organization responsible for creating their abilities to control the five elements.

A mighty wind…
Eighteen-year-old Stedford Thackett’s conspiracy theorist brother ensnares him in a real life children-as-weapons plot, while a determined scientist grooms happy-go-lucky five-year-old Darcie Lynn Carpenter to use the wind as a deadly weapon.

Out of control...
Despite the firm hand of Scientist Nora Hicks, Stedford struggles to rescue the kids and escape, even as Darcie Lynn fights to gain control of the surging power of the savage winds.

CHILDREN OF THE ELEMENTS SERIES

The Children of the Elements are brought together and tested as weapons of mass destruction. Their struggle to free themselves and survive in the hostile East Tennessee Mountains creates massive chaos and threatens to bring about an apocalypse.

When nature, put into the hands of children that rule wind, earth, fire, water, and the void, refuses to be controlled, can mankind endure?

Five full novels, one huge story.

Savage Winds (Book 1)
Dire Rumblings (Book 2)
Raging Inferno (Book 3
Unrelenting Tide (Book 4)
Merciless Void (Book 5)

Do you have a favorite character?
Stedford Thackett, an eighteen-year-old techno-geek, is clumsy, socially awkward, and an unwitting advocate to free the children from their kidnappers. Harboring a love for burgers, pizza, and crunchy cheese snacks, he tries to save his brother and the children while struggling to survive.

Have you ever had a minor character evolve into a major one? Did that change the direction of the novel at all?
Scientist Nora Hicks, an unwilling subject and accomplice to the Top Secret Project, started out as a minor character. Initially, I intended to feature only Stedford’s and the child of the particular element spotlighted by the book points of view, but Nora insisted on taking a leading role.

Did you try the traditional route to publishing, i.e. querying agents/publishers?
I did initially pursue a traditional route and even received some top-agent interest, but chose to form Towering Pines Publishing and branch out on my own.

How long before you got your offer of representation/your first contract? Was it for your first novel?
The year that I finished my first novel; however, I chose another path.

What factors influenced your decision to go with a particular agent or publisher?
Towering Pines Publishing is my answer to branching into publishing.

Are you currently under a traditional publishing contract for future books or do you have manuscripts that you will self-publish? Are you doing both?
In the future, I would consider targeting a particular trilogy to traditional publishing and branching into the hybrid world of publishing, depending on the wording of the potential contract, to improve discoverability.

What factors influenced your decision to self-publish your book(s)?
I couldn’t fathom signing my rights away for a lifetime plus 70 years and getting paid pennies on the dollar when I could build self-supporting career by focusing on long-term goals.

If you used a graphic designer/publisher’s designer, how involved were you during the creative process for your cover?
Direct feedback and several choices led to a depiction of the elements on each cover, such as a tornado for Savage Winds.

Do you belong to a critique group? Have they helped improve your writing?
I have been involved in critique groups in the past, but I much more appreciate one-on-one feedback of a writing coach or mentor, which has improved my writing skills and technique greatly.

What is your writing process? Do you listen to music or do you like silence?
For the music I listen to, I tend to prefer the sounds of rainstorms and ocean waves. I write in 15-minute increments with stretch breaks in between.

Do you outline your story or just go where your muse takes you?
I tend to jot down major plot points and jot down what might happen in the next scene. All plotting and planning is fluid; therefore, I adjust as I go along.

What’s next for you?
Currently, I have two YA books in progress with releases scheduled for this spring.

One is the first in an Elven Quest Trilogy featuring teens that go from a teen outdoor survival boot camp to a realm with elves, trolls, and dragons.

The other features teens auditioning for lead roles in a ghost-busting TV reality show and their haunting adventures.

Savage Winds and the rest of the Children of the Elements series is available at Barnes & Noble, Kobo, Apple, Page Foundry, Baker & Taylor, txtr, Overdrive, Flipkart, Oyster, Scribd, etc.

Author R.J. Merle stepped out of the realm of Top-Secret documents (shh, don’t tell…) to write sci-fi and paranormal fiction.

R.J. survived and escaped both the entertainment field and the government-contracting environment, craves the Walking Dead, and entertains what-if tidbits about “supposed” technological and biological advances.

No stranger to the goings on in the city of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, R.J. Merle blends a down-home flavor with a former in-the-know—hypothetically, of course—technical background to craft the twists and intrigue of Secret City Adventures.

#Excerpt: BREAKING AWAY Series by Meli Raine

Excerpt:
It’s so quiet out here in the desert. Hot and quiet. I don’t really need the sweatshirt out here, but I like to pretend I can still smell my Mom when I wear it. I don’t even wash the sweatshirt, not ever, because it feels like wiping away the last little bit of her I have.
A crackle of footsteps makes me jump. Then I freeze. The moon glows in the sky. The stars feel so close on this clear night that I could reach up and stroke one. Every sound thunders through my ears. I hug myself closer. Coyotes aren’t uncommon here, but I’m only a few feet from the front door. I’m not in much danger from animals.
The sound isn’t coming from an animal, though.
“Who’s there?” I call out.
I see the outline of his body as he steps into the light from the porch lamp. My heart skips a beat and my blood pounds through me. It’s Chase, and he’s walking toward me like he has all the time in the world.
Like he’s known me forever.
“Hey, Allie.” His voice is like whiskey poured over silk. My body starts to buzz and a frantic feeling takes form. It combines with my ball of anger inside and I need to move. Run away. Do something. Do anything to make this feeling make sense.
Stop myself before I jump into his arms and kiss him.
Chase decides for me. He walks so close to me that I can feel his own heat radiating out, drawing me closer. I take one step toward him. His hand reaches out to take a strand of my hair and pull on it, gently, like a line that tethers me to him. We’re connected and I’m buzzing, wanting more.
“What are you doing here?” I rasp. My voice betrays me, because even I can hear how much I like him in my words. I’m clumsy and don’t know what to say. No guy has ever come to my house before, or touched me like this. A cold chill floats down from the base of my neck to my waist.
He flashes me that half grin again. My knees turn to liquid. He lets go of my hair and reaches for my hand, the one with the worst of the glass cuts on it. When he touches me, it feels like dipping my whole body in the ocean.
“I want to make sure you’re okay.” The moon seems to shine brighter, Chase’s eyes smoldering, glittering with emotion. He penetrates me with his gaze, nailing me in place. I came outside because I needed to get away from my anger, needed to feel like I could breathe again.
And here I am with him. Like I conjured him.
Maybe saying his name three times really did make him appear.
Maybe I have more power than I thought.
When he reaches to stroke my arm, I let out a giant sigh and realize I’ve been holding my breath. “I’m okay,” I murmur.
“I’m not. I couldn’t stop thinking about you all day. Worrying about you. Wanting to see you,” he says in a husky voice.
The butterfly in my chest turns into one hundred of them. “Thank you,” is all I can think to say.
He just nods. “That was a tough scene.”
“What was that about? Jeff’s never done that before,” I ask. All my questions come pouring out. I can’t ask Jeff anything. “Why did your biker club fight with Jeff and his friends?”
He takes a long, deep breath. I regret my questions. His sigh is hard to read. Is he annoyed? Weary? Worried? Or, worse, angry? Chase’s shoulders rise, his chest expands, and he’s so muscular and intense. “I know part of the reason, but it’s a long story.”
He sounds like he’s just tired.
I smile and spread my arms upward. “I have all the time in the world.”
Chase starts wrapping his arms around my waist with a slow, strong grip. My chest is pressed against his ribs, his belt buckle digging into my belly. Every part of me is racing at light speed, all toward Chase. I have never touched a guy like this in my life. Being held in his arms feels like heaven. I never knew that so much of my skin could sing simply from being touched like this. By Chase. He makes me light up, turns on all the heat and need in me.
“I can think of plenty other things I’d rather do with all that time of yours,” he says darkly. His eyes look at me with the same expression he had back at the bar parking lot, when I licked my finger.
Like he wants to taste me.
Me? Why me? I wonder, and open my mouth to ask the question as he bends down and takes my mouth with his.
Oh!
The kiss shocks me, his lips so soft and warm. He tastes like mint and grapes, the scent of him a mixture of sweat and heat and dust and musk that I can’t name. If it had a name, it would just be Chase.
My thoughts jam up, jumbling together as his hands slide up my spine, sinking into the hair at my neck. His fingers travel from the nape down halfway through the strands, then he makes a fist. It’s like he’s using me as an anchor.
“Allie, I don’t know why I’m here,” he murmurs against my ear. “I saw you today and couldn’t get you out of my head.” His lips kiss the soft skin under my earlobe. I shiver, inhaling so sharply it’s like I’ve taken all the air in the world into my lungs at once.

They can make me disappear. Or worse. It turns out there are worse things than disappearing.
I thought Chase was my only hope.
Now he turns out to be my worst nightmare.
Something flickers in his eyes, though. A glimmer of love. If I can get him alone, maybe I can convince him to let me go. To let me live.
To let me go back to a time when I thought he was a good guy.
Only Chase has the power to make that happen.
Everything I am is in his hands right now.
And those hands are about to touch me.

#Excerpt: FOR ALL TO SEE by Megan Mitcham

Excerpt:
The tough-as-titanium woman placed her hand in his as though she were as fragile as fine China. A primal need to shield her from harm thrashed its way to life, annihilating every reserve he’d clung to over the past few days. Some things weren’t worth fighting. Fighting the need to possess Madelyn was like wrestling a hurricane. He battened down and dug in the best he could. When that didn’t work he ran like hell. But one gust knocked him flat on his ass. One wave swept away the world he’d known. And he was done fighting the one woman who could rearrange his priorities.
Hand on the grip of his gun and the other wrapped around something far more dangerous, Nathan led the way to her Jeep. They rode in silence for a while. The echoes of their argument rang in his ears. He’d pushed her, but no further than she could handle. But now her head sagged against the leather rest. “I’m—”
“Don’t you dare say you’re sorry,” she interrupted.
            Still tough.
“I was going to say, I’m thinking steak for dinner.”
            “I guess it’s a good thing you’re a terrible liar.”
“It’s no lie that having a whole cow spit roasted and served on a platter has crossed my mind a time or fifty in the last few days.”
            “Gross.”
            “Delicious.”
“You can eat whatever you want, in my house or out. I want a shower and bed.”
“Good luck getting rid of me.”
“The craving will get you sooner or later.”
“A different craving takes precedence.” Nathan caught her gaze for the first time since he’d released her hand and closed the car door.
“You’re on the job. Isn’t there a policy against that?”
“There’s a whole handbook against it. Not to mention my own policies, which have held firm all the way up until you bullied your way into my life.” He gave her a sideways grin and turned back to the road.
            “Bullied?”
“Yep. You refused to leave. You refused a protection detail and a free vacation in Miami. You got me.”
“Can I renegotiate my terms? Miami sounds nice.”
“If you really want to, yes. I’ll have you on a plane tonight.” He didn’t want her to go, but he wanted her safe more.
“What was it you said? Good luck getting rid of me?” She looped her tote over her shoulder and prepared to exit the Jeep.
“How about you wait and let me go in first this time?”
            “If you insist.”
“I do.” He killed the engine and waited for her to join him. “Stay behind me.”
“I thought your people were watching this place 24/7.”
            “They are.”
            “But you don’t trust them?”
            “People make mistakes.”
“Some bigger than others,” she said wistfully.
He grabbed her hand and pulled her into the house. Shock of shocks, she didn’t jerk away. Deacon greeted him with a muzzle to the crotch.
“Should I leave you two alone?” Madelyn whispered.
Nathan poked her gently in the ribs and addressed the dog. “Buddy, we’re going to need to set up some personal boundaries. But if a bad guy shows up, that’s the perfect spot to bite. Now come on, let’s go find a bad guy.” They walked room to room, clearing the space. Deacon gave up in the living room and flounced onto his bed.
“It’s just you and me.” Madelyn’s quiet voice bounced off the tiles and smacked him in the nuts.
Yes, it was just the two of them in the bathroom with nothing but time to pass until they caught the serial killer. His hand slid from the gun and he turned. Her hand hid her sweet mouth from view.
“I didn’t mean…it’s just you and me. I meant…there’s no boogie man lying in wait.” Her cheeks flushed that unmistakable shade of pink that set off the lightly toasted tan of her skin.
“Mmm-hmm.” He took the hand from her mouth and glided his up her naked arm.
Her breath hitched. Long, dark lashes veiled her gaze, which followed the trail of his fingers. He’d happily chance a shot to the balls to kiss her, but she wasn’t ready yet. He lifted the bag from her shoulder.
“You have a nice bath.” Mounting every bit of strength he possessed, he turned and walked out the door.
