#Review: DUKE GONE ROGUE by Christy Carlyle

3.5 stars

Madeline Ravenwood and Will Hart, Duke of Ashmore, meet when Will takes a holiday to one of his estates in Haven Cove. Will is not well-liked by his peers because of his efforts to uncover all of his father's misdeeds. His sister Cora convinces him that a holiday was in his best interest and Will agrees. Little did he realize that Madeline was the same woman he met in London months ago when she witnesses his former fiance breaking their engagement. Madeline is attracted to the duke and though her life is devoted to duty to keep her family's nursery afloat and thriving, she takes time out of her busy schedule to spend time with Will. Can these two find common ground or will their fledgling love fizzle out?

This was an enjoyable story without a lot of conflict except for the H and h own doubts about being together. While a lot of time is spent on Madeline's nursery, only a few sentences are devoted to Will's quest to clear his family's name. I would have liked more backstory on this point as it was hard to feel the censure Society held him in without any examples besides the one of his ex-fiance's uncle. The romance between Will and Madeline is a slow-burn and when they finally succumb to their passion, it is not described in graphic detail. The story is a bit slow in parts, but if any couple deserves a HEA, it's these two. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

I voluntarily read the advanced reader copy and all opinions are my own.

#Review: GIRLS BEFORE EARLS by Anna Bennett

  4 of 5 stars

When his brother and sister-in-law died in a tragic carriage accident Gabriel Beckett, Earl of Bladenton, found himself the guardian of their 15 year old daughter. He wants nothing to do with her and shuffles her from one boarding school to another. After Kitty gets kicked out of her 3rd boarding school, a small school run by Miss Hazel Lively is his last resort, but he never expects to be attracted to the prim and proper headmistress. Hazel has suffered tragedy in her early life and wants her school to be a welcoming place for girls. When she meets Bladenton, it surprises her that she's attracted to the sullen earl. Against her better judgment, she lets him enroll his niece with the stipulation he must visit Kitty every other week. Can Hazel remain professional or will her growing passion for the earl put everything she's worked for in jeopardy?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Ms. Bennett writes full-bodied characters and both Hazel and Blade were likeable. Each of them try to work through tragedies in their lives and find that they can confide in each other without judgment. I loved their slow burn romance that started with a dare for a kiss. The secondary characters were also well written. There was really no major conflicts besides threats from Lady Penelope to expose their affair, but that threat soon fizzles. I look forward to more books in this series.

I voluntarily read the advanced reader copy and all opinions are my own.

#Review: A SCOUNDREL OF HER OWN by Stacy Reid

  4 of 5 stars

I enjoy reading books by this talented author. This one is the third in the series and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Ophelia and Devlin first met as children when Devlin saved her from a raging river. That one incident will drive Devlin's life as he grew and struggled to be worthy of Lady Ophelia. Both characters were strong and shared many passionate experiences, but even though Devlin was now very wealthy, he knew he would never be accepted by Society. Some of Ophelia's actions as she sneaks out of her father's house seem a bit far fetched for the time especially when no one, not even a servant, is aware of her late night activities. Even though these two did finally get their HEA, I was disappointed that it was so easy as Ophelia being of age and not caring what Society thinks of their union. There are several graphic sex scenes so reader be warned if you don't care for that.

I look forward to reading the next book. I voluntarily read the advanced reader copy and all opinions are my own.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent
By Lisa A. Markson

"When tragedy happens it can put your life in a tailspin. That is exactly what happened to Lacey Gardner after the death of her sister. Lacey is a detective in the Fringe department which is the division of the police department that deals with things of the paranormal and the regular department doesn't want to deal with. Lacey is really good for this job with the mess of her life she is able to connect with her job on a level most couldn't. The controversy between Damon and Nic gives us a story that we are unable to put down from the first page to the very last page. I love how the authors gave the background to who and what Damon was and the history of the Silver Cross he wore and why. Thank you for such a intense and amazing story. I highly recommend if you like a paranormal romance that has you on the edge of your seat."

5.0 out of 5 stars Another "Read into the Night" gem By mooselise "never bookless"
"I loved the action right from the beginning of the book. It definitely got me hooked, and then I met the heroine, Lacey & absolutely loved her. It's nice to see a main character who is a strong assertive female. This book has action, adventure, romance and rich, well developed characters. I will be waiting for the sequel, cause I know it's coming!
"

 5.0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal
By Amanda
"I loved this book! It had an awesome mix of mystery, action, and romance. Lacey was a fierce. strong-willed, lead female and I also really enjoyed getting to know her partners. Through them, you learned a little more about her too. Her and Damon had a great energy together and you could tell from the beginning that he wasn't like the other vampires, the ones that Lacey made a living getting rid of. I can't wait to read the next in this series and everything else from these authors!!"

 5.0 out of 5 stars Exhilarating and Exciting
By Athena L Nagel "Athena L Nagel - The Stuff of...

"The Silver Cross was an excellent read. Not too slow at all - the pace was exhilarating and exciting. I read it in one (long) sitting. I found I just could not put it down. I needed to know what was going to happen next with Damon and Lacey - together or separately."

'TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS

1
  'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,

  When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

  The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

"Now, DASHER! now, DANCER! now, PRANCER and VIXEN!
On, COMET! on CUPID! on, DONNER and BLITZEN!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my hand, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

  His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.

  He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;

  He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;

#Review: UNMASKING SIN by Mary Lancaster

  4 of 5 stars

Lady Rebecca Cornish has not had the best of luck with husbands. Having been widowed twice, scandal has named her The Black Widow and accuse her of killing them. She's friendless and lonely. When she meets Ludovic Dunne at the Maide Pleasure Gardens, she feels a stirring of desire until she realizes he's working for her son's uncles--the very men who have been trying to take her son away from her. Ludovic soon discovers he's working for the wrong party, but the damage is done and Rebecca no longer trusts him. Can he convince her that he's done working for the uncles and only wants to help her clear her name and keep her son?

I really enjoyed this book. I felt so bad for Rebecca and her situation was unfortunately not unique with women having no voice of their own. She has done nothing wrong, but rumor paints her as a murderess. I loved Ludovic and his fight for justice. He only wants to get at the truth, but the more involved he is with Rebecca's problems, the more he's attracted to her. Their love story takes most of the story to work toward a HEA. The author does a great job of letting their love blossom without any insta love. There's also a mystery that is resolved involving Ludovic's brother. I'm looking forward to reading the next story in the series.

I voluntarily read the advanced reader copy and all opinions are my own.

#Review: NOT JUST ANY EARL by Anna Bradley

  4 of 5 stars

Jonathan Parrish, the Earl of Melrose, is the darling of the ton and everyone expects him to offer for the belle of the Season, Lady Christine, but when he encounters a mysterious lady in the library his life changes. He was so drunk that he neglected to get the lady's name or to remember anything at all about her except her kiss was seared into his heart. Emmeline Templeton only went to the library to retrieve a book, but when Melrose appears suddenly and kisses her, he stirs her passion like no other. The Templeton name is already tainted with scandal and Emmeline doesn't want to bring another scandal down on her family name, but she can't stopped thinking about the Earl of Melrose.

This is a sweet novella about the consequences of being the subject of the ton gossip and how one slight indiscretion can change the direction of your life. All it takes is one mean girl, namely Lady Christine who is bent on ruining the Templeton sisters once again. Emmeline was an intriguing character who at first did not own up to the fact that she was the lady in the library. When the vicious gossip lands on her sister Juliet, she must give up any dream of having the earl for her own. She's so honorable, but what she doesn't realize is that Melrose was just as enamored with her as she was with him and he's not about to let her run away. The author does a good job fleshing out the secondary characters as well. Can't wait to read book 2 to find out if Juliet captures Lord Cross's heart.

I voluntarily read this advanced reader copy and all opinions are my own.

#Excerpt: ONLY SOMETIMES by Felicia Blaedel

Only Sometimes
Felicia Blaedel
(The Without Filter Series, #3)
Publication date: December 9th 2021
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Disagreeing from the first time they meet, Noah and Niko know exactly how to push each other’s buttons while they fight the intense pull between them. But when they’re forced to work together, they might realise that their connection runs deeper than frustration and lust.

Niko is driven and ambitious, even when it’s misconceived as cold and measured. Her latest project is her great-grandmother’s nature organisation. Niko is determined to see it thrive again and hopefully understand herself and her broken family better in the process. Getting a handle on her inconvenient feelings is a must too.

Noah has made a promise to set things right and honour his eccentric grandfather’s hard work. Even when that means taking on an active role in a small nature organisation, while hiding his true identity. He is busy enough as it is with university, work, and late nights of writing. Still, he can’t help but care about the organisation. Or the fierce woman who always seems to make his life harder.

Only Sometimes is a new adult frenemies to lovers romance set in Copenhagen, Denmark (with a getaway to a gorgeous Swedish forest). It’s book three in the Without Filter Series, but it can be read as a complete standalone. Only Sometimes is a steamy slow-burn romance, and it contains spicier content than the previous two books in the series.

Goodreads / Amazon

EXCERPT:

Noah’s POV

When I hear Niko’s laugh, I stop so abruptly that an older man almost stumbles into me. It’s sweet and songful and a stark contrast to her usual sharp tone—but then again, I think she reserves that one just for me. My eyes zero in on her in no time, always so damned attuned to her every move. She’s standing next to the bar chatting, but I only notice her. My mouth is dry, and a drink would probably help, but I can’t seem to move.

She’s wearing a simple pale green summer dress that shows off her trained shoulders and arms. It’s almost floor-length, and her hair is up and pinned with a fresh pink flower. It makes me think of midsummer nights and dancing under the stars. Her deep red lips form a crooked smile, and then suddenly, her eyes cut to mine. For a moment, we’re simply looking at each other, her smile still lingering. I don’t realise that I’m walking before I’m standing right in front of her.

I’m pretty much invading Niko’s personal space without planning to. Our closeness screams of an intimacy that we don’t share and never will. She’s abandoned whatever conversation she was having, waiting for me to speak. I was the one to run over here like a man on a mission, but my throat is so dry and my mind is scattered.

She’s breathing lightly, like she’s afraid to make a sound, but her eyes are all challenge and fire. A touch of pink colours her cheeks, and I notice a faint dusting of freckles on her light skin. Heat rushes over me—embarrassment that I’m standing there staring like an idiot with an overwhelming urge to reach out and touch her.

Niko is fucking magnetic. Her beauty is a contrast I can’t get enough of, no matter how much it pisses me off. Her body is toned and firm, likely capable of kicking my arse, but she’s still delicate and feminine, almost like something out of a fairy tale.

My hand lifts on its own accord, but I hide the motion by clenching my fists, frustrated with myself. I’m burning, but I doubt it has anything to do with the evening sunshine.

Niko straightens ever so slightly, her eyes narrowing. The challenge in them grows stronger until it overpowers every bit of softness left. It’s my fault. I probably look like a mad man. Aggressive. She must think I’m about to pick a fight with her. I briefly close my eyes and take my first full breath since I raced over here.

“Hi,” I say hoarsely as I refocus on her.

“Hi, Noah. You clean up nicely,” Niko answers, an amused smile playing on her lips.

The compliment shocks me, but maybe it was supposed to because she looks entertained. Perhaps she’s sarcastic. I want to smack my head into something hard for overthinking. I also want to compliment her, but I have no idea what to say that won’t give too much away and make working with her even harder.

I’m too slow, as Niko rolls her eyes. “Don’t look so scared. Just because I appreciate seeing you in something other than those awful, convertible hiking shorts does not mean we’re friends. You don’t have to look so torn up.” Her voice is sugary and unaffected, but her eyes look hurt as she scans the rest of the party.

It’s as if someone turned off the mute button on the whole event as the sound of chit chat, laughter and clinking glasses overwhelms me.

Review: THE BALLERINAS by Rachel Kapelke-Dale

  5 of 5 stars

This is a fantastic story of three friends, Delphine, Lindsay and Margaux, who meet when they are young girls at a prestigious ballet school in Paris. The story is told from Delphine's POV and it was captivating and kept me turning the pages. Together they train and compete for advancement. Can three young girls remain friends when they compete for the same thing? Can they honestly support each other? The story flips back and forth between the past and present and Ms. Kapelke-Dale slowly reveals the secrets that cannot stay hidden forever.

The story is not solely about the world of ballet, but more the relationships surrounding the men and women in their lives. Delphine left the ballet company suddenly with a Russian choreographer and finally comes back to the school as a choreographer thirteen years later. She tries hard to get back to the same level of friendship with Lindsay and Margaux who are still dancing, but people change and friendships evolve. Everyone always referred to Delphine as the nice one, but a shocking moment changes everything. The story is full of twists and turns and I did not see the ending coming. I've never taken ballet and it didn't matter as this story is about the friendship of three girls who grow into three accomplished young women.

I voluntarily read the advanced reader copy and all opinions are my own.

Interview with Lindy Miller, SLEIGH BELLS ON BREADLOAF MOUNTAIN

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series?

Sleigh Bells on Bread Loaf Mountain is a sweet holiday romance, with messages on body positivity, believing in yourself, and finding the magic of the season. It has a woman of color at its lead, a diverse group of characters, a handsome mountain ranger love interest, and a golden retriever companion. This is a standalone novella perfect for a holiday season read—plus, there are yummy recipes in the back!

Do you have a favorite character?

My favorite character is Spencer Chen, Roxanne’s work colleague and best friend. Fabulous, funny, and just the right amount of sassy, Spencer is actually modeled after one of my former students, Stephen. Stephen holds a very special place in my heart, and it only makes sense Spencer would too.

Are you currently under a traditional publishing contract for future books or do you have manuscripts that you will self-publish? Are you doing both?

I’m a traditionally published author. I’ve never self-published before, but would never say never! There are a couple of old manuscripts hanging out on my hard drive that aren’t currently homed, and they’ve got to find their way to readers eventually, so it’s possible I may consider self-publishing in the future.

What is your writing process? Do you listen to music or do you like silence?

Honestly, this completely depends on what I am writing. I write sweet romances for the screen as well as horror novels, and do a good bit of work in non-fiction as well. Each comes with its own process and habits, though I consistently tend to do my best writing at night, when there are less distractions (and I’m not tempted to go outside). I have a ton of writing playlists on Spotify, including some unofficial book soundtracks and a lot of instrumental mood music.

Do you outline your story or just go where your muse takes you?

Both! Writing romances for the screen follows a fairly consistent formula, so my outlines tend to be looser. Horror, on the other hand, typically requires a lot more moving parts, so I do my best to develop a pretty robust outline—and then pants my way through the draft anyway!

Besides Amazon, are there any other sites where your books are for sale?

All of my books are available online and in bookstores. Amazon is a great option for book buying, of course, but I strongly encourage readers to shop local and support their independent bookstores. If there’s a title they don’t have on the shelf, they can always order it for you. Plus, hand sellers are the best and have terrific book recommendations.

Do you find it difficult to juggle your time between marketing your current book and writing your next book?

I am extremely grateful to have a rockstar publicity team that handles so much on my behalf, but spending time personally connecting with readers is very important to me, so I do my best to make time for as much marketing work as possible. Since I write at night, I typically take care of marketing activities during the day, and that provides a good balance.

Besides writing, do you have any other passions?

I love to run, so when I’m not writing you’ll typically find me running—usually at home on my treadmill because it’s always raining here in Alaska. I’m also an advocate for animal rights so support organizations that work to spread awareness there through volunteering. Traveling is one of my top passions, so I try to do that as much as I can too—actually, I’m just about to hit the road on book tour, so I’m super excited about that!

Some fun facts about you, which do you prefer – dogs or cats? Chocolate or vanilla? Coffee or Tea? Talk or Text? Day or Night?

Dogs, vanilla, tea, text, night! I also love cats, chocolate, coffee, talking, and daytime.

What’s next for you?

I’m one of those writers who always has to have their pens going in multiple directions at once. Right now, I’m wrapping up some new horror manuscripts while outlining the next book in my optioned-for-film Bar Harbor Holiday Series, to follow The Magic Ingredient. I’m also working on a couple of really fun collaborative projects—a horror novel with my good friend and director Pearry Teo, a spooky, middle grade novel with fantasy writer Sam Hooker, and a sweet holiday romance with Tiffany Smith, one of the stars of my previous book-to-film romance, Aloha With Love.
