Excerpt from THE MAN IN GULL COTTAGE:
He cleared his throat. “This part of the beach is private.”
She paused and stared at him. “What part?”
He jerked a thumb in the direction from which she’d come. “See the three round wooden pillars? That’s where my land starts.”
She turned and shielded her eyes with her hand. “Oh, I thought those were to keep people from driving their cars on the sand.”
“That, too, but one has a large sign that says Gull Cottage and Private Beach. That should have been a clue.”
She held up a kid’s plastic sand pail. “Are you saying I should return these shells I’ve collected for my niece?”
“I’m saying you’re on private property. I don’t care if you collect sea shells, but I’d appreciate you not disturbing anything else.”
“Like what? You think I’m coming up to rob your house? Wait, what if I took a clump of sea oats? Or a handful of your sand? Are you patrolling?”
He extended his hand palm out. “Don’t get mad at me when you’re the one trespassing. I meant collecting drift wood and sea glass or destroying sand dunes. I’m simply out here walking on my beach.”
She straightened her shoulders and looked at the barrier. “Well, see that you don’t walk on that side of those posts.”
“Ah, but I will and I can do so legally.” He gestured broadly. “The beach where you’re staying is public. This part is private. See the difference?”
“No, I don’t see the difference. It’s the same sand.”

BLUE VALLEY AUTHOR SERVICES provide affordable cover art and formatting for your books

Have you been struggling trying to find affordable cover art for your books? I've recently come across a business, BLUE VALLEY AUTHOR SERVICES, to rebrand my "Loving a Billionaire" series. I've been working with Victorine and she has been so accommodating all my requests. They offer a full compliment of services, book cover design, eBook formatting and paperback formatting.

Their website is: www.bluevalleyauthorservices.com.

Welcome to Blue Valley Author Services

We offer eBook and paperback formatting and cover art at affordable prices. We take great care to make sure your book looks professional. Authors who present a professional product sell more, and at higher prices. We know not all authors can format their books, or design a professional-looking cover. With our help, your book will be just like a traditionally-published book.

The staff includes:

Brenda Camp

Brenda Camp has just hit her one year anniversary with Blue Valley Author Services. Trained by her sister Victorine E. Lieske, she has artfully crafted dozens of eBook and print covers, some of which have found themselves on top seller lists in their respective genres. Always willing to listen to the client’s desire, Brenda strives to bring to life their vision while incorporating her experience to balance results with the market.

Victorine Lieske

Victorine Lieske has been professionally designing book covers for the last six years. Her cover for Accidentally Married won the Best of Adult award in the IndieRevAwards book cover contest. She has designed book covers for authors and publishing houses, as well as her own New York Times Best Selling novel, Not What She Seems. She lives in Nebraska.

Craig Hansen

Craig Hansen has formatted in excess of 450 books for a wide variety of independent authors, as well as traditional publishing clients. He has been working in editorial and formatting capacities for a variety of employers over the past twenty years, with experience formatting everything from print books to eBooks to SOP manuals and newspapers. Outside of Blue Valley Author Services, Hansen is also an author with seven books to his credit to date, including Most Likely, Shada, Under Contract, The Devohrah Initiative, Nice Girl Like You, Spoiled, and The Woodsman. His writing and editorial experience, which includes an extensive background in the book-industry-standard, The Chicago Manual of Style, means Blue Valley clients will benefit from his trained eyes formatting their manuscripts.

Andie Hansen

  • Policy on excessive changes
Some authors/clients provide very clean copy; others request changes late in the game, after formatting has begun. If the extent of the changes are minimal in number, we happily provide this service free of charge. However, others need far more changes made. Excessive changes to a manuscript after formatting has begun requires extra time spent on a project. Therefore, limits to what we “do for free” must be set.
Therefore, effective immediately, here is our new policy on excessive changes.
One round of up to 20 changes to the text will be provided free-of-charge.

If more than 20 changes are required, clients will be invoiced at a rate of $0.75 USD per change.

If additional rounds of changes are requested, The per-change rate will be $0.75 USD per change, starting from the first change.

Our best advice: submit clean manuscripts that are already fully edited and proofread, to avoid excessive change-fee surcharges. Never use formatting as “a proof-copy” prior to editing or proofreading, or just to “see what it looks like,” as that will lead to additional fees.

If a project submitted has too many apparent errors, Blue Valley Author Services reserves the right to refer the author to obtain more editing help, or to turn down the formatting job if that becomes necessary.

Our goal is to work with our clients (publishers and authors alike) to create the best eBooks possible, so if we suggest you obtain more editing for a project, please trust that we do so only to make your book the best it can possibly be.

Are you looking for more exposure for your book without having to pay through the nose?

Every author knows to get your book in front of as many eyes as possible is time consuming and in many cases very costly. However, ads can be one of the best way to garner sales and future fans of their work. Many authors do not have the means to pay for some of the top ad sites and here is a viable alternative. I’ve also used a number of various ad sites and I recently came across one site that is easy to use and submits your book to a number of sites on your behalf all for LESS than the price of a cup of coffee!

It’s ANNIE’S BOOK SUBMISSION SERVICES and I’ve used her services for 2 upcoming ad campaigns. Annie is a delight to work with and responded to my requests in a timely manner. There was no waiting days or weeks to find out if she would submit your book. So, if you’re looking for a different ad site, be sure to check out Annie’s Book Submission Services.

Link:

Here’s the info and submission prices:

Authors, are you tired of spending hours looking up sites where you could promote your books and then filling out tedious forms to submit your books for their consideration? Time is money, and those are hours you could be spending writing! Wouldn't you rather pay one (very low) fee to have someone do it for you?

The Short Version:
For $2.99, tell me the next set of dates in which your book will temporarily be free, and I will submit it to 28 book promotion sites (a set list). They may or may not all decide to feature the book, but it will be submitted to them.

Or, for $1.99, tell me the next set of dates in which your book will temporarily be 99 cents (if it's permanently 99 cents, that's fine too; just pick some dates when you want it featured) and I will submit it to 15 sites that accept 99 cent books. They may or may not all decide to feature the book, but it will be submitted to them.

Or, for $1.99, tell me the next set of dates in which you would like your permafree book to be featured, and I will submit it to 13 sites that accept permafree books. They may or may not all decide to feature the book, but it will be submitted to them.

Another option: instead of paying the fees mentioned above through PayPal, you could buy one of my ebooks instead. :-) (Click on the covers in the sidebar to the right to find out more about each one.) Most of them are $2.99 or less; feel free to pick any one of them at any price (as long as it's not free at the time) and either download it for yourself or "gift" it to a friend. (I emailed Amazon to make sure this doesn't violate their terms of service, and they assured me it's okay.) If you choose this option, simply take a screenshot or forward me the confirmation email from Amazon that shows what book you bought (you can send it to AnnieDouglassLima (at) gmail (dot) com), and indicate on my form that you've done so.
The Long Version:
Want to know more about how it works? Don't understand how/why I can offer a service like this so cheaply? Click here for the full details, complete with screenshots and explanations of each step.

*Sorry, but I won't submit erotica or books promoting religions other than Christianity. Don't take it personally if that's what you write. We can still be friends! :-) But I can't in good conscience help to promote those books.
Fill out the form below and let me submit your book to up to 31 promo sites for you for about the cost of a cup of coffee! (There's a link to pay through PayPal at the end.

5 Tips for Successful Blogging for Writers

The Internet has made it possible for writers to be their own one-made shop. You can write your book, publish it, sell it, and market it all on your own. You reap all the profits, and you can former closer relationships with your readers.

Blogging is one of the best marketing tools available to writers. You can use it to promote your work and to connect directly with your fans. You can reveal insights into your process, share news about upcoming publications or sales, and participate in a direct conversation with your readers.

However, blogging may not be like the writing you're used to doing. You need to take a special approach in order to make your blogging successful (and, therefore, a useful tool in marketing yourself). Here are a few tips:

Be Yourself
In their quest to put on a professional, public face in their blogs, many writers lose their own voice and fail to connect with readers. It is important to be yourself when you write -- just like you would in your professional writing. Being yourself will help you to stand out and will help readers to feel a connection with you, which will encourage them to read your blog and your published writing.

Offer Value
Blogging is a great tool to promote yourself and your work, but if all you ever do is promote yourself, you'll alienate your audience. You must offer your readers something of value in order to keep them coming back to your site (where they can learn more about you and your work). You can offer value by sharing useful information (perhaps some writing tips or some information about the publishing industry) or by writing entertaining content. Strive to create a healthy mix of promotional content and content that creates value for your readers.

Adapt to the Format
Every type of writing has a very specific format. So does blogging. Some guidelines include:
·       Short sentences.
·       Short paragraphs of only 2-3 sentences each.
·       Bulleted points.
·       Bold headers and other elements to break up the page and improve readability.

If you're a novelist, it may be hard to break up your long paragraphs, and if you're a poet, it may be difficult to pare back the descriptions. Be aware of your format, and adapt as necessary.

Use SEO
One of the best ways to get your blog noticed is to optimize it for search engine results. That way, when someone searches for something in your niche, they are more likely to find your blog. SEO incorporates a large number of elements, but the key strategies involve identifying the right keywords for your blog and then using them in your content, headers, and other page elements Other basic strategies include link building, increasing page loading times and optimizing your design.

Get Social
Social media is a great compliment to your blog. You should be sharing all your blog posts on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, and should be striving to expand the conversation with followers there. Social networking can help you to reach a larger audience and can increase the page rank for your blog (getting you more exposure and more traffic).

Blogging is a great way for writers to promote themselves and to build relationships with their readers. If you are new to blogging, or if you aren't seeing the results you would like from blogging, consider these tips for success to start reaching your goals.

Are you blogging to promote your work? Share your best tips for success in the comments!

Are You a Good Citizen?

Debra L Martin
I've been thinking about this question for some time. What does this mean for an author? One thing it doesn't mean is to constantly tweet or have Facebook posts that say "buy my book, buy my book!" After awhile, people will start ignoring your tweets and posts because they are always the same.

Every author wants sales, of course, but what else can you be doing to help drive those sales. There are a number of things that will help you to become a "good citizen" in the writing world and in the long run will help your sales. Who knows? Along the way, you'll be amazed at the online friendships that develop when you allow yourself to connect with others.

Here are a few things that I do to be a "good citizen."
  1. Take the time to get to know people and have conversations with them on twitter. Once you get to know people, you'll find that they will be more than willing to retweet for you. Now your book(s) is being talked about in a ever widening circle. Exposure is a great boost for any title. The same things goes for Facebook. Interact with people. Social media is an extremely important component in the publicity of your book. Use it wisely and you'll reap the rewards.

  2. Help spread the word for another author's book. Use twitter, facebook, google+, whatever is available to you. A quick tweet or FB post about a new release is simple.  I have many "new release" posts on my blog and my triberr mates retweet it. Exposure is the key for sales. If people don't know a book exists, they can't buy it. When it's your turn for a "new release" people will be more than willing to help you spread the word.

  3. If you have a blog, offer author interviews. I've done over 200 author interviews. Authors love to talk about themselves and their books. I have a set of interview questions for indie authors and one for traditionally published authors. I change the questions every 6 months or so. Some authors like to mix and match them and that's fine with me. I've met some extremely interesting people through my author interview series and I plan to continue it as long as authors keep asking to be featured on Two Ends of the Pen.

  4. Answer questions when you can for newbie authors. We've all been there and trust me, most all of the questions have been asked before, but if you're online at a forum and know the answer, why not answer it? People remember such kindnesses and who knows, you may be the one asking the question some day.

  5. Offer to guest post at your favorite blog. Believe me, I welcome guest posts. My only stipulations is that the post has to do with writing or publishing. I've kept quite a few of the most popular ones in the sidebar to make it easy for readers to find them.  As a matter of fact, the guest posts and the author discussion questions are the most popular ones on the blog. Week after week, those posts are clicked on and read.

  6. Offer up contests or giveaways on your blog. The prize could be anywhere from one of your books to a gift card from Amazon or BN. Readers love to enter contests and you'll have the opportunity to gain new readers to your blog. While they may have only clicked on your link to enter the contest, a number of them will stick around to read your content. Keep your blog updated and make sure your books are displayed in the sidebar or on their own page to make it easy for readers to find your book(s).

Above all, be professional and kind. Your online personality is the only avenue for some folks to get to know you. And as your mother always said, "Say thank you." It's such a simple thing, but it speaks volumes.  So, what kind of things do you do to be a "good citizen?" Big or small, everything counts! "Pay it forward."

5 Compelling Reasons to Guest Post by Christine Kane

Today, I'd like to welcome Christine Kane to Two Ends of the Pen. She will explain why you should think about doing a guest post for bloggers. Take it away Christine!

As a blogger it is best to always try to be your best blogging self and guest posting is a great way to do that. Guest posting has many different reasons why it can help you and your blog, check them out:

Great for brainstorming for future articles: Writing for another blog can help you brainstorm up some future posts for your own blog. Typically when you write for something that is not your own, you feel less pressure and the need for more creative thoughts begin. During this guest posting time, write down any other ideas that come into your mind as you work on the guest post.

Get ideas for your own blog: Each blog has a different set up and writing style. Most blogs you guest post for will have rules and guidelines that they want you to follow. Some of them will request a certain format, style, word count and font. You may gather some ideas on the look of your blog too.

Practice grammar: You have heard that slogan many time, practice makes perfect. That applies with writing, the more you write the better you will get at it. Guest posting forces you to really focus and concentrate on your word production making sure that the sentence structures, grammar and word usage are a good representation of your writing.

Get your name out there: The more blogs you write for the more you get your name out there. And the more you get your name out there, the more you will get recognized. If you write a post that is interesting and entertaining enough, this guarantees new readers for you.

Step outside of your norm: If you typically blog about one subject then guest posting is a great way for you to expand your blogging horizons. Find blogs that you are interested in and that you can connect with.  You never know what you can gain from writing for a guest post; you could tap into a whole new genre of writing.
Now log on and start searching for your next guest post. Pick something that interests you and have fun with it! Don’t forget to follow the bloggers rules and guidelines and link back to your personal blog. Good luck and happy blogging!
