#Review: CRYSTAL DECEPTION by Doug J Cooper

5 of 5 stars

Do you ever wonder about AI (Artificial Intelligence)? Humans are building more and more complex computers that are exponentially smarter and faster many times over than the human brain. But, have we ever created an AI that was sentient? That is the premise in CRYSTAL DECEPTION. Dr. Jessica Tallett's research pays off when she programs 100 super crystals to design and build molecule by molecule the world's first 4-gen sentient crystal, nicknamed Criss. But the people of Earth aren't the only ones interested in obtaining Criss. An alien race of traders is bent on acquiring Criss and thus begins a non-stop heart-pounding story that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the final word is read.

I applaud Mr. Cooper for keeping "the science" in the book understandable. After all, because Criss is sentient, there is a good deal of the book from his POV. His thought process is enlightening and interesting. The characters of Jessica, Sid and Cheryl are well-fleshed out. We have the scientist, the spy and the spaceship commander. Each follows their own pathway as they collectively try to foil the kidnapping attempt of Criss. This is one smart book. Fans of science fiction will thoroughly enjoy this story. Highly recommended.

About the Author:

As a young child, Doug stood on a Florida beach and watched an Apollo spacecraft climb the sky on its mission to the moon. He thrilled at the sight of the pillar of flames pushing the rocket upward. And then the thunderous roar washed over him, and shook his body and soul. Since then, he has explored life as an educator and entrepreneur. He enjoys telling inventive tales, mentoring driven individuals, and pursuing scientific inquiry.

In his new book, Crystal Deception, Doug swirls his creative imagination with his life experiences to craft a science fiction action-adventure story with engaging characters and a plot line with surprises. He lives in Connecticut with his wonderful wife and with pictures of his son, who is off somewhere in the world creating adventures of his own.

Author Bio:
I live in Kentucky near Fort Knox with my wife, 2 children, and our dog "Elvis". Although I have been writing for the better part of a decade, I have only recently begun publishing novels.

"Sway" is my third novel, and is very different from my first two which were the first two in a trilogy, "Watchers of the Night"—a sci-fi fantasy adventure about a young man who can walk the night in his dreams. He is recruited by an agency run by the United Nations that uses people like him to gather intelligence. The first book in that trilogy, published in April 2013, won 5th place in the annual critiquemynovel.com writing contest.

My next project, currently underway and due for release in the spring, is the final installment of that trilogy, "The Fall of Astralis". After finishing the Watchers trilogy, it is my intention to head back into darker fiction and continue to test my boundaries as a writer.

#Excerpt: SWORN TO CONFLICT by Terah Edun

“Satisfied?” Sebastian said.
“No,” she said with a frown.
He opened his mouth to protest and closed it with audible click when she got up and moved so that her body was snuggled next to his and her arms were around his shoulders.
They said nothing for the moment. Ciardis felt the slow rise and fall of Sebastian’s bare chest under her hand. She was trying to avoid touching the angry bruise he had going down his right half.
She said, “I thought you had died, Sebastian. That you had left me alone. That we would never kiss again, never speak again, never touch again.”
He shifted his head slightly underneath her chin so that his head rested on her chest. “I’m sorry.”
“Sorry for what?”
“Sorry for worrying you,” he whispered.
“You should be.”
He laughed gently.
Shifting his head, he said with hope in his voice, “Speaking of kisses…”
She swatted his shoulder. “No.”
“But—”
“No, the healer says you need to rest—”
“But I feel fine,” he whined.
“Go to sleep, Sebastian,” she whispered. “There’s much to do tomorrow.”
“Will you be here?”
“I will.”
As he drifted off she laid a chaste kiss on his hair and a single tear dropped onto his head. Gripping the Prince Heir tightly, she, too, drifted off to sleep.
When she woke it was because of noise outside of the tent.
A guard was whispering, “Prince Heir Sebastian. Lady Weathervane. The major is here to report to you.”
Ciardis shifted, preparing to rise up and tell them that the Prince Heir was still resting.
Sebastian beat her to it. “Come in.”
She still stood up. Sebastian groaned at the removal of her presence from his bed.
The major cleared his throat and entered the room.
He nodded briefly to Ciardis. “Four hours have passed, sire. It is approaching the early evening. We lost two hundred men in the skirmishes, with many more wounded.”
Sebastian nodded and with a wince sat up in the bed. Ciardis moved forward as if to stop him, and he said, “No, I need to see to the wounded, Ciardis.”
“Besides,” Sebastian said casually, “if I collapse again, at least it’ll be in the healer’s tent.”

Interview with Daniel Arenson

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series?
My new book is titled Moth, a fantasy novel for fans of books like The Hobbit. It's the first in a series simply titled The Moth Saga. Moth is about a world torn in two--one half always in daylight, the other always in darkness. Here's the book's blurb:

They say the world used to turn. They say that night would follow day in an endless dance. They say that dawn rose, dusk fell, and we worshiped both sun and stars.

That was a long time ago.

The dance has died. The world has fallen still. We float through the heavens, one half always in light, one half always in shadow. Like the moth of our forests, one wing white and the other black, we are torn.

My people are the fortunate. We live in daylight, blessed in the warmth of the sun. Yet across the line, the others lurk in eternal night, afraid... and alone in the dark.

I was born in the light. I was sent into darkness. This is my story.

You can learn more about Moth at its website: http://DanielArenson.com/Moth
You can see the book at Amazon here: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FI4BYEE

Do you have a favorite character?
My favorite character might be Bailey (the girl who appears on the cover). She's tough, sarcastic, and simply badass; she doesn't let anyone lead her or tell her what to do. This fiery, headstrong attitude gets her into lots of trouble, but it makes her fun to write about.

Have you ever had a minor character evolve into a major one? Did that change the direction of the novel at all?
That did happen in my trilogy The Dragon War. The first book, A Legacy of Light, features a young urchin named Erry. She's an orphan girl who lives on a boardwalk, stealing and rummaging through trash to survive, sharing a few hidden nooks with stray cats. Though small physically, she's tough and foul-mouthed. At first, she was meant to just be a secondary, throwaway character. But her strong outer shell, which shields an inner vulnerability, made her a great character to write. In the sequels, she's promoted to a point-of-view character and becomes one of the most important people in the series.

You can learn about A Legacy of Light here: http://www.danielarenson.com/ALegacyOfLight.aspx

What is your writing process? Do you listen to music or do you like silence?
I always listen to music while writing. For intense scenes, I'll listen to metal groups like Arch Enemy and Amon Amarth. For lighter scenes, I often listen to soundtracks (I love almost everything by John Williams, James Horner, and Howard Shore) and epic music such as Two Steps from Hell.

Do you outline your story or just go where your muse takes you?
I did outline Moth extensively. It's my first book in this new world, and I felt that I needed a detailed blueprint.

The sequel (which is now available for pre-order) was done with a much simpler outline. By now, I knew the characters, mood, and overall storyline a lot better. With only simple plot points to guide me, I was able to just delve in and write.

Did you hire an editor to review your manuscript before publishing?
Yes! My editor for my dragon novels (Song of Dragons, Dragonlore, and The Dragon War) is Anne Victory. Moth was edited by Ashley Davis.

Besides Amazon, are there any other sites where your books are for sale?
Here are some places where you can buy Moth:

What kinds of marketing [twitter, facebook, blog, forums] are you involved with for promoting your book(s)?
Twitter: http://Twitter.com/DanielArenson
Facebook: http://Facebook.com/DanielArenson
Website: http://www.DanielArenson.com

Do you find it difficult to juggle your time between marketing your current book and writing your next book?
While I do promote, I feel that the best kind of promotion is writing the next book. Releasing a new book stirs interest in the older ones too, and it's really the best way to get the word out.

What’s next for you?
Keep an eye open for Empires of Moth, the second book in The Moth Saga! It'll be released on December 12, and you can already pre-order it on Amazon. :) Take a look: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GOFTVXM

Guest Post: THE INSPIRATION BEHIND FINN FINNEGAN by Darby Karchut

I am often asked: why Celtic mythology? Well, my undergraduate degree is in anthropology, so my fascination with world cultures and myths goes way back. But it was a chance comment from my sister (who travels to Africa every year) about so-called “fairy rings” found in the African bush. The local people said they were created by magical beings. I started researching fairy rings, which led me first to Ireland, then the Tuatha De Danaan, and finally to the legend of Fionn mac Cumhail. And thus, The Adventures of Finn MacCullen were born. Plus, I come from Irish stock; hence my first name, which is an old family name on my father’s side.

But my real inspiration comes from my students. I have always written for older elementary and middle school boys. Since I teach 7th grade (social studies), I am constantly surrounded by this age. I wanted to give my boys a hero their own age they can measure themselves against as well as an adult male hero they can emulate.

I am such a fortunate author, for there is not a day goes by that I don’t see a copy of my book in the hands of one of my students. What a gift.

What a treat to visit with everyone today. Please don’t hesitate to ask me questions or make a comment. I’ll be stopping by throughout the day.

Book & Author Details:

Finn Finnegan by Darby Karchut
(The Adventures of Finn MacCullen #1)
Published by: Spencer Hill Press
Publication date: March 12th 2013
Genres: Fantasy, Middle-Grade

Synopsis:
Finnegan MacCullen: a thirteen-year-old apprentice with the famous Irish temperament.
Gideon Lir: a legendary Celtic warrior with a bit of a temper of his own.

Secretly, these blue-collar warriors battle the hobgoblins infesting their suburban neighborhood…when they are not battling each other.

Finn (not bleedin’ Finnegan) MacCullen is eager to begin his apprenticeship. He soon discovers the ups and downs of hunting monsters in a suburban neighborhood under the demanding tutelage of the Knight, Gideon Lir. Both master and apprentice are descendents of the Tuatha De Danaan, a magical race of warriors from Ireland. Scattered long ago to the four corners of the world, the De Danaan wage a two thousand year old clandestine battle with their ancient enemy, the Amandán, a breed of goblin-like creatures.

Now with the beasts concentrating their attacks on Finn, he and his master must race to locate the lost Spear of the Tuatha De Danaan, the only weapon that can destroy the Amandán, all the while hiding his true identity from his new friends, Rafe and Savannah, twins whose South African roots may hold a key to Finn’s survival.

Armed with a bronze dagger, some ancient Celtic magic, and a hair-trigger temper, Finn is about to show his enemies the true meaning of “fighting Irish.”

#Review: SHADOW OF THE REVENAUNT by Paul E Horsman

3 of 5 stars

The night before his Coming-of-Age, Ghyll and his two friends escape their castle on a clandestine hunt that would forever change their lives. They returned just in time to see their island castle destroyed by strange warriors and flocks of burning birds. Ghyll’s birthday turned into a nightmare as they fled into the night. This begins an epic journey to find out who is trying to kill them... and most importantly, why?

I was excited to read this book because fantasy is my favorite genre to read. The book starts out with a bang - very intriguing first chapter. It was a great start, but then the book faltered for me. While the characters are interesting, their quest became repetitious - the group is attacked, they fight well although one of them is injured, thus delaying their journey. Half-way through the book, I had the plot figured out. And, most importantly, there didn't seem to be any urgency for them to complete their quest. This is usually a staple in most fantasy novels. Of course, there are evil men chasing them, but the group plods along as best they can trying to decipher the clues. I thought there would be a great battle at the end, but I was sorely disappointed. The book ends abruptly with no conclusion to the main storyline. I'm sure there's a sequel to deal with this, but I like the major storyline at least resolved when I read a book. I give the author kudos for an interesting idea. I just wish he had dealt with the ending of this book in a different way.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Interview with Juliana Haygert

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series?
Soul Oath is the sequel of Destiny Gift. It follows the story of Nadine, Victor, Micah, and Ceris, and some other characters … and I can’t say much more without revealing big things from the end of Destiny Gift ;)

Do you have a favorite character?
My favorite character isn’t one from a book. It’s Zuko from the cartoon The Last AirBender. He’s just amazing. Everything about him and his journey! I love it how he begins as a villain and ends up one of the Avatar’s best friends!

Have you ever had a minor character evolve into a major one? Did that change the direction of the novel at all?
Hm, maybe Micah from Destiny Gift and Soul Oath? He was always a major character, but he wasn’t what he became. He was supposed to be someone to be a thorn on Victor’s path, someone with whom Victor bickered with, but Micah ended up being so much more. Sorry, if I say more, I’ll end up spoiling some plot points ;)

Did you try the traditional route to publishing, i.e. querying agents/publishers?
I did with Destiny Gift (The Everlast Trilogy #1). I got lots of requests and great feedback, but back then (2010-11), New Adult was still frowned upon and agents told me I should change my characters’ ages. They wanted me to make it YA or adult, no middle ground. I confess I tried changing it to YA, but it didn’t work. An editor told me my voice was too mature for YA and too young for adult (duh?).

If you used a graphic designer/publisher’s designer, how involved were you during the creative process for your cover?
The only thing I did was to choose the photo used on the cover – the rest was all up to my cover artist, Sarah Hansen of Okay Creations. She did her magic and I loved it!

What is your writing process? Do you listen to music or do you like silence?
My process is different for each book because they are all in different stages. I mean, Destiny Gift surged from a simple question, Breaking the Reins came from a music video and some research into the polo world. And Soul Oath had a loose outline, taking from where Destiny Gift left off. One thing is for sure though: there’s always music. It’s my fuel!

Do you outline your story or just go where your muse takes you?
It depends on the story. Some come to me with very specific scenes. Even so, the muse takes me from one scene to the other. I’m a mix of pantser and plotter, but trying to more and more like a plotter, since it works better when writing series.

Did you hire an editor to review your manuscript before publishing?
With Destiny Gift, I actually hired 3 editors to critique my manuscript – and that was after 3 CPs had a look over it and before I decided to self-publish. With Soul Oath, I was a much more confident writer and I know most of my strengths and weaknesses, plus I have an awesome editor and I trust her 100%.

What have you’ve learned during your self-publishing journey?
That everything in publishing, writing and reading really IS subjective. One person will LOVE your book. The other will HATE it. It’s just the way it is …

Do you find it difficult to juggle your time between marketing your current book and writing your next book?
Honestly, besides book blitz and blog tour, I don’t do any marketing. I don’t like it, I don’t feel comfortable with it, and I honestly believe the next book is the best marketing an author can get.

What advice would you give a new author just entering into the self-publishing arena?
If this is your first book, don’t self-publish it. At least not before undergoing several critiques and editing.

Also, research and ask around. Writers are friendly (mostly) and always ready to answer your questions ;)

Besides writing, do you have any other passions?
Dancing. I was a ballerina for many, many years. I hurt my foot and can’t dance anymore – not professionally at least. So I dance at home when I can ;)

What’s next for you?
I’m finishing Playing Pretend now (by the time this interview is posted, the ms will be with my editor), then I’ll write the sequel of Soul Oath, The Everlasting Circle.

Thank you for having me! :)

Guest Post: GUILTY PLEASURES by Ivy Sinclair

We all have our guilty pleasures. One of mine, that proves useful at the most random times, is my love of entertainment and celebrity news. Some people check their daily horoscopes or fantasy football stats- I check up on what’s going on in Hollywood. One of the most utilized apps on my phone (aside from Facebook, of course) is my EOnline app. Several times a day I troll the latest entertainment headlines and oh and ah over photos from recent celebrity sightings across the globe.

If you’d ask me why I’m so intrigued with the happenings in movie and TV land and the people who inhabit them, I wouldn’t have a good answer. In a way it’s like asking an avid reader why they like to read so much. You just do, and it feels at times like it’s programmed into your DNA. It’s a hobby of sorts for me, but one I take very seriously.

I enjoy my role of being the first one in my social circle to know the latest break-ups and hook-ups in Hollywood, what movies have recently gotten green-lighted, and who has been cast in the next big blockbuster movie. It makes for good happy hour conversation if nothing else.

It’s easy to point to the reason for celebrity watching as a kind of envious observation from afar. These beautiful people make a living playing out fiction for our entertainment. They can choose to be anyone they want to be, there’s the appearance that they make a lot of money, and since we always see the same faces in front of the camera, we assume their life is glamorous and fascinating in a way that we ordinary humans will never experience.

But once you start peeling back the layers, you realize that choosing to live your life in the spotlight brings just as many negative aspects as it does positive ones. Watching an emotional Halle Berry and Jennifer Garner testify in court in an effort to protect their children from harassment by the paparazzi shines a much different light on the whole topic.

That’s the level that I wanted to explore in one of the major subplots in Grounded By You. The hero of the story, Carter “Sam” Groveson, is plucked from obscurity to star in the film adaptation of a well-known and loved literary novel. His life is changing forever and he has to learn to maneuver living life in front of the cameras. How that impacts his relationship with woman he cares about, and wants to build a future with, is one of the main obstacles that he needs to overcome.

Ironically, a real story came out around the casting issues for the Fifty Shades of Grey film adaptation that showed a parallel to Grounded By You. The original actor cast as Christian Grey decided to drop out partly due to the pressures of being thrust into the limelight. While this isn’t exactly what happens with Sam in the book, it was a relevant example of an actual situation where life happened to be imitating my art.

While I enjoy the glitz and glamour stories of Hollywood today, it’s the stories that show the human “in real life” side of the business that truly interests me. Probably because it’s nice to know that despite their jobs, at the end of the day, the people involved in creating those fairy tale, fictional worlds are more like us than we give them credit for.
